I just got my felpuppy to silence when I want him to, not automatically? Preferably when the enemy is casting to apply the long silence.
He just runs in and does it automatically, which is great, but for PvP I'd like to silence for longer periods of time.

you turn off auto silence and use it when you need it.
Dont have it on autocast ,its silly.
His silence is,when used proper,very very powerfull.
If you use it while enemy is casting you lock that school of magic for 6 sec,if used on enemy while NOT casting they get 3 sec silence.
In arena spell lock is priceless.

FYI doing this is refered to as "neutering" your puppy. :)
Also, if you're silencing manually, watch out for "feinting", which shammies and druids are the worst for. "Feinting" is when a player knows they're going to be silenced so they use a spell of a differnt school (or even hearthstones, which looks just like a druid/shammy heal), leaving them able to contiues using their good spell while your puppy's silence is on CD. You may want to turn on the enemy caster bar feature to prevent this.

I dont think auto-cast is so silly.
If you are the first attacking, the target is unable to get the first hit, or buff themselves. One might also target, then wait till they start casting, then attack (at least in dungions).
Devour Magic is more valuable to me, at least as a Demonology warlock. It knocks-down shields and other buffs, and keeps my felhunter going for a long time. It is very difficult to kill my character with magick, and can only be done if there is a group on me; my felhunter's resistances are each well over 200, so using magick against it is futile.
