Level 40...frostFollow

Would this be a viable frost spec at 40? Assuming my goal is mainly solo PvE grinding with a huge focus on crowd-control and survivability (and a little extra single-target damage via Imp FB), I think those would be the points best spent. Of course, since I dont have much experience with a mage or discussing mage talents, I could be completely wrong.

And I know ice shards is missing from that spec...I'm favoring CC over damage for the most part (even imp FB has it's place...kiting is easier if your spell has a shorter cast time AFAIK). Or would it be too hard on me to give that up?

This is how I would spec for Level 40 if I was going for survival:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZZVVGG0bxobo

With that, you gain Ice Shards. Ice Shards, Shatter, and Frostbite is the Holy Trinity of Frost. If you do kiting with Rank 1 Frostbolt, then you have the same chance for Frostbite to Proc as a regular Frostbolt would, and that would give you a chance to fire of your highest Frostbolt rank to have at least a 50/50 shot to crit. The extra damage is well worth it.

I've also dropped Cold Snap and Ice Block, and have given you Ice Barrier. Do not get me wrong, both are highly important in a frost build, and perhaps in your next couple levels you can put a couple points into that, but believe me, you will get a lot more use out of Ice Barrier than you will for Ice Block at the level. You have less cooldown with it as well with Ice Floes.

Improved Blizzard has been dropped as well. Basically, unless you plan to AoE grind and until you're in some higher instances, Improved Blizzard has little use. You need at least 3 mobs at once to really make it shine for an effective damage to mana ratio...

The linked spec is what I would go with, just from my personal prefernce. You will get the other toys you need, but I just wouldn't worry about it and instead just focus on leveling. You'll get the things you need back. Just give this one a try, see how you like it.

I'm preferring to AoE grind. That was the point of this build.

If you are going to AoE-grind, this is the build for you: Click!

Frostbite + Improved Blizzard results in enemies left behind frozen, you don't want that. That's the main change I guess.

Could you use a couple extra sentences to explain that one please? It was too concise for me.

During the AOE grinding rotation (using blizzard, not using cone of cold), you do this:

ice barrier (if you have it), round up mobs, frost nova, get to max blizzard range, then blizzard x 2, cone of cold, frost nova, blizzard.

During the blizzard x 2, if you have frostbite, some mobs may be separated from the group by being frozen to the ground due to frostbite procs. This means your next blizzard does not hit all of the mobs and they aren't in a group anymore, which could be disastrous for your AOE grind.

This is why frostbite is not standard in an AOE grinding build. You can get away with it at lvl 70 due to tons of spell damage and such, but at lvl 40 you cannot.

I only included frostbite because the STICKY had it in the solo frost build. Anyway...revised 40 spec: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZZMuMhsfosfo

Planning on filling up 3 of the 4 I've got at not-full capacity later, with an end-frost spec (meaning before I switch to another tree) of http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZZMAMIsfxsiqz
I know it's probably a bit more into one tree than most people would go...but I think it would work for me.
