Caster vs. Melee MacesFollow

I was just wondering how caster maces compared to melee maces, as far as prot is concerned (both tanking and solo grinding).

For example, just looking at a couple level 70 rare maces, it appears there is a 30 DPS drop from the melee to the caster mace. However, there's an 11 DPS upgrade to SoR from the caster mace (121*0.092 = 11.1), so if you use SoR it would only be a 20 DPS decrease...but if you factor in all the other things it would benefit (consecrate, SoV, JoR/V) would it be worth it to go for a caster weapon?

When you get to 70, it's generally accepted that you need around 200 spell damage to be able to hold threat well enough. This increases as you get to higher raids, but for regular 5-mans, Heroics, and Kara, ~200 spell damage is what you should aim for. (I'm at 181 myself, and I generate threat well enough.)

It doesn't really matter how you get there, however the easiest way to do that is through your weapon. They tend to have the highest amount of spell damage while not gimping your tanking stats. If you use your armor you don't have to get a spell damage weapon, however you tend to gimp your tanking stats more.

The agreed upon most desirable weapon for a long time is the [wowitem=32660]Crystalforged Sword[/wowitem].

An alternate you can get from revered with KoT is the [wowitem=29185]Continuum Blade[/wowitem]

however the best tanking weapon I have seen is an arena reward the [wowitem=32963]Merciless Gladiator's Gavel[/wowitem], however there will probably be a better one in s3 so we'll see.

So...basically what you're saying is caster weapons are okay? That's all I was asking for, the simple answer :). You provided a bunch of examples without explicitly answering the question lol (but I guess I could figure it out from there).

Actually, i think he was saying that Caster Weapons are prefered, not just Okay. you should very deliberatly aim for a caster weapon above all other choices.

I generally don't give answers without at least trying to explain them a bit at first, especially if it isn't common sense. You'll feel that much better about grabbing a caster weapon if you know the reasons why you are getting that caster weapon.

That's a good point. But don't give details at the expense of an unambiguous answer. Although reading through again, I see you did answer it, but it wasn't all that clear the first time.

Thanks though!

Well when I write things I expect people to hang on my every single word and commit them to memory before moving to the next. Then once that has occurred be eager to read the next string of text that my fingers have wrote as if through divine guidance.

That's just me though.

Our protadin use the arena mace as his tanking weapon. I hate arena so I use the crystalforged sword

I want the arena mace, I just don't want to spend the time and effort to get it :(

You know... if you switch to holy, you won't need that mace anymore

I hope the OP doesn't mind if I jack this thread...but what weapons would you then recommend for a shockadin? In general, and specific?

Umm, the Arena SpellDmg mace? >_>

And if you want something to use before you get it, if you ever get it, I'd suggest either Mana Wrath, Continuum Blade, Greatsword of Horrid Dreams or Crystalforged Sword.

So shockadins use 1H too? I thought they were of the 2H variety.

Depends how you play it I suppose. I'd aim for more SpellDmg myself, but you could try to get SoC in the Retro tree and go with a two-hander... but then your SpellDmg would take a huge hit.

shockadins use one-handers + shields

Or maybe bliz should make some caster 2H maces. My thoughts were that if you get a 2H with SoR, it would take more of a bonus from SoR. But for some reason I was thinking double the bonus, when it's only like 2% more (I could be off by a percent or so, bite me). If only I could remember why I thought it was double...
