hunter without a petFollow

Why would a level 38 hunter not have a pet? I partied with one in sm-cathedral yesterday ...he also used melee attacks instead of a bow/gun. He did less damage than the other hunter (who DID have a pet and a bow), but neither came close to what my shield did (tankadin). Even our group's healer was whispering me WTF's.

I've never played a hunter. Could someone enlighten me?

He either never tamed one, or he came unprepared. He could also have stabled it in order to tame a different pet. I think in SM you can tame one of the hyenas.

As a seasoned lvl 70 raiding hunter I can tell you a little in regards to your question. Bear with me if it gets long winded as these are types of things that earn Hunters the name "Huntards" and irratate the crap out of me.

1. Although it is possible he came in to the instance with the intentions of taming a hyena as mentioned on previous post. He should have said that to the party beforehand.

True; there are some situations (especialy in high end content) where the pet is going to die allmost immediately on boss fights so it doesnt matter if you have pet at THAT time or not. Not bringing one at all is just plain dumb imo. Especially for mid level instance like SM.

2. And probably the most likely of answers; He is just not well versed in his class/roll as was indicated by his rediculous melee antics. (Nub) I'm gonna take a streatch here and assume he probably ran out of arrows and probably had no food to feed his pet.

He probably just jumped into party and was so excited to go into instance, he didn't take stock of his invintory. That my friend; is the kiss of death.

Funny... there's a similar discussion going on in the Warlock forum about not using your pet.

Different forum, same answer. There is no good reason why a hunter would not have a pet at Level 38. They are given to us for a reason...Primarily, maintaing ranged distance.... I think, I could be wrong... lol.

From what you've said, it almost sounds like this person meant to roll a warrior, and probably should have.

What high end boss fights are you referring to?

I would guess any boss with an AOE attack where the hunter forgets to recall his pet to get it out of harms way for a little healing before sending it back. ;)

I can't think of any bosses that would immediatly kill your pet with an AoE attack.

As a seasoned raider, Dfexpc should be wary of his pet.

HKM: The shaman has an AOE knockback that isn't too bad and the mage has an AOE that will kill or come close to killing your pet. You shouldn't melee the mage period, so your own fault if you do.

Gruul: If your MT is in a cave-in, your pet will more than likely take a thousand or two damage per tick. Mend and leave him or call him back.

Magtheridon: If your melee are interrupting the shadow bolts like they should be, there is no issue while they are up. After that as long as your pet is not infront of Mag (cleave) or in the fire (conflagration) they shouldn't recieve much damage aside from a poorly timed click.

Void Reaver: This one is tricky, every 10 sec I believe he does the AoE ground pound that does serious damage. That's an annoying send, call back, send, call back fight. Mixed in with dodging the orbs it is pretty rough.

Hydross: Your pet should not incur any real damage here.

Lurker below: I leave my pet parked on an island since he shouldn't be dpsing lurker himself. The water spout will not touch him if he is on the island.

Tidewalker: Leave him on Morogrim the whole fight. No significant damage here. Aside from his occasional AoE that is easily recoverable.

That's as far as I have gone, and I'm not going to waste my time describing KZ.

Just sayin.

I feel that all answers have been covered I'd just like to request that this doesn't tarnish your view of hunters.
