So as my Mage's journey coming along nicely I desided to give Shammy a go. I am new to this class, so please point out mistakes/right choices I have made. I know it is good to do seome research before playing but I tried to make my choices based on my personl experience with other classes.
For race I picked Tauren - more health, stomp and that nice +15 herbalism bonus (he is my alt after all).
For my leveling build I desided to go with Enc - it looks like the downtime will be minimal due to fairly ligh usage of mana pool.
Overall I desided to go with 2H - better windfury effect, plus I am on PvP server, so every hit has to count.

Now the question - do you guys use totems often when levelling? I meen do you put all 4 up for every fight or you just niglect some of them?

I use totems in an odd way (at least that's what the other shamans I've run across tell me). I consider the number of mobs I can engage while staying, at least relatively easily, within totem range.

1 mob (no possible adds): No totems
1 mob (possible adds): 1 totem (normally Strength of Earth or Grace of Air)
2-5 mobs (no possible adds): 2 totems (normally Grace of Air and Strength of Earth)
2-5 mobs (possible adds): 4 totems (I wait until I engage the mob to drop the fire totem and I take care where to drop it)
5+ mobs: 4 totems, changing them if the situation requires

Once you get to the higher levels and experience different situations, it'll become second nature to you on when to drop your totems and which ones to drop. Check out the FAQ (did I just say that?) and scroll down to the post on totems, it's a great starting place to check out what totems do.

The Baron has it pretty right, obviously you will need to find what works for you though.

1-2 mobs I tend not to worry about totems, as the numbers increase I will tend to use them though. For groups I tend to drop Grace of Air, stoneclaw, healing stream and magma (pretty much in that order as the numbers increase).

I find this effective as it increases my avoidance, keeps one mob off me for a time, gives me a little health regen (not heaps but it makes a difference)and the fire totem helps burn them down a little faster (no pun intended).

For elites I will usually drop all four but assuming a single elite I substitute strength of earth for stoneclaw.

Being a new shaman myself, I also throw down totems based on numbers. Although if I am feeling lazy I'll put down a fire totem to kill for me. LOL

I just got the mana totem, so If I'm healing for an instance that one or the healing totem is always down, then whatever will benefit the group most. And I'm still learning that.

If I am solo'ing I'll usually drop all four simply because its become a matter of habit by now. Now _which_ Totems I drop varies depending on if I am alone or with a group, or if I am facing someone that poisons or is a caster, etc.

well also it depends on what ur spec is as a shaman to im enhance so i drop grace of air, strength and magma and grounding if casters are involvd

If you are solo'ing, I would stay away from using magma totem at all costs. It has a huge mana cost for what damage it does do not to mention a few ticks and it could be gone. For a bit of extra dps Searing Totem would be alot more effective since having all that extra mana for a LHW can be really nice.

O yeah no doubt i hardly ever use magma totem soloing if thers more than one enemy the stonelcaw totem is decent enuf to help take some agro off u

Zaishen has it right. I generally go after gear in the following order; Strength, Attack Power, Agility, Crit, Stamina, Intellect, Hit.
#12 Oct 30 2007 at 10:10 AM Rating: Decent
Yeah strength and agility is wat i go for first because if you cant find strength then agility not only helps with attack power it ads to crit and armor which increases ur survivabilty and damage

Agility does not add Attack Power for Shamans unless I've missed something. It does add AP for Hunters, Rogues and Kitties though.

really wow i didnt know that i thought it did cuz it does for hunters as well
#15 Oct 30 2007 at 10:30 AM Rating: Decent
Just checked to be sure, Agility gives Melee Attack Power for those three classes.
