Which gear do you use when solo playing as prot?Follow

Hello,

I'm having trouble with the gear I try to get for soloing as a prot pally.

I play many characters at lvl 70, my main is a healing priest, my second char is a protection paladin, the others are dps (feral druid, frost mage, Demonology warlock, enhancement shaman). I manage to build up a good dps set for my main, stacking +spell damage and a lot of spirit, allowing her to solo really nicely.

The first idea I had for my paladin was to stack +spell damage, but I'm having really longer downtime than my priest (her mana regen is really big, even in combat).

I also thought that a spell damage set would be nice for easy instances and low level rush.

Am I wrong? Should I focus on other stats for this secondary set? MP5? keeping def and block stats? What is your secondary set for soloing?

Umm, my first reflex would be to say that if you're having much downtime as a Prot Pally there's something you're doing wrong. As long as you're avoiding spellcasters in favor of (preferably) fast-hitting melee mobs it should be easy enough.

Do you "AoE grind" as a Pally? If so, with BoW up and using a mix of SoW and SoL you should be able to keep your health and mana around 80% most of the time and kill waves after waves without too much downtime in-between.

As for stats I'd just get much Stam and a fair bit of +SpellDmg and Int. Not much more to go for I'd say.

Maybe I'm missing something in the bigger picture and someone else can fill in.

when mobs do physical damage and call be pulled by packs it is quite easy I agree. But many quests include also casters to be killed... And sometimes pulling big packs is not easy...

Well, I think most people will agree with the following:

Prot -> AoE grind spec
Retro -> Questing spec

To easily kill casters as well, Retro would be a better choice, but I can understand if you prefer to remain Prot.

I wish I could help with casters, but I had trouble myself when I did 40-60 Prot. I just avoided them as much as possible or, if I really had to kill them, I'd just unload everything I have and usually drink after 1-3 fights.

Maybe a 70 Prot Pally could offer more insights.

2 sets of gear, one a solo-dps set, and the other an aoe-tanking set.

The Solo-dps set would stack on lots of melee attack power, crit chance, the normal stuff just think "Arms Warrior", this will allow you to grind down annoying spellcasters and individual mobs faster than your...

AOE-dps set, include your normal tanking gear, maybe throw in some extra spelldamage, and you should be good to fight hordes of melee npcs. A good grinding spot to test this out is the Demon Hunter training grounds on top of the BT. I can take all of them at once, and I can even solo that elite that walks around if I grab him by accident (it just takes forever). Downtime is about 10 seconds as I restore my 4k mana with an 8k mana drink.

at least.... that's what I do anyway

My prot has 2 sets of gear.

My Tanking gear with all my def, avoidance and stam.

My solo/duo gear with all the traditional pally stats.
Stam,Int,spell damage, Mp5.

with SoL/JoL and reckoning, i dont need any real mitigation or avoidance. plus my consicrate is only half as usefull if i havent any decent spell damage. Also, when i Duo with my destro lock roomate, i need all the SD i can get to keep him safe. that guy just loves seed of corruption. . .

Edit: yeah, BT is an awsome place for a Prot pally to swing his epeen. there is no one alive who isnt impressed when you can solo 20+ lvl 70 mobs and not even care.

Thank you for your answers!

Physical damage set would be nice against casters...
I wish I could have bigger bags than 20 slots to carry all those sets!

Could any one link items used for his solo set(s)?

my solo gear is all "Pally" plate from quests. the only other gear that i could recomended as solo gear is the dungeon 3 gear. as its all stam, int, spell damage, then they toss some def rating on it to try to pass it off as tank gear.

you could easily just buy all your solo plate off the AH. i cant remember what suffex i used to use, but there is one with stam, int, spell damage, and MP5. which suits my play style of solo prot nicely. just avoid spell crit, its a waste as im pretty sure that non of the AOEs can crit. Rightous can, but you shouldnt be using it for AOE grinding.

QFT.

It's going to be as much about style as it is about gear.

My style in gear, I think, varies maybe a little from some of the folks here - 6-10 mobs is about what I can manage comfortably, not 20. THough I have handled more and have drawn adds and done fine, but 6-10 is where it's easy.

About gear, off the top of my head here's what I cam remember the differences between my tanking set and my solo set:

Spell dmg: Solo set has about 2.5 times the spell dmg as my tanking set
Int: I have about twice as much mana in my solo set as I do in my tank set
Stam: I have about 40% less health in my solo set as my tanking set

Those are the three that I worry about. Ditch spirit gear unless it has some other stats that you want, in most cases you're casting/sealing/judging too much to make it worthwhile.

On to style:

You should have BoSanc, Ret Aura and RF (if you have Imp RF, if you don't then perhaps a respec to get it) on.

Don't aggro 1 mob aggro 2, don't aggro 2 aggro 4, you get the idea. Gather as many as you can handle then stop and drop a consecrate.

Drop a consecrate first off, but don't spam the crap out of it or your mana pool is gone.

Seal/Judge light on the first mob youre going to attack.

The next bit depends on what you've gathered and how you're holding up. Most of the time I'll seal SoR and judge it when I can judge unless I need the health or mana from other seals.

When I get my first target down to just under half I switch (he's just going to beat himself to death on my reflective dmg now while I get the next guy), Seal/Judge light on the next target and rinse and repeat moving on when they're half health or below.

Drop consecrates periodically but again, mind yer mana.

The last mob or two that's left I'll use them to replensh health or mana, which ever I need so that when I'm done with 10 mobs I'm pretty much topped off.

Obviously there are a few different styles, this is just what I use.

to clearify, the only place i can get 20 mobs and do fine is at black temple. those mobs(blood elves) dont do anything but auto attack, and they duel weild. they also are all in fighting each other cycles so some of them are half health.

they go into evasion mode at about5-10%hp, but that matters little to your reflect damage and consicrate. if you run JoL and SoL you can proc up to 4 times a swing. you should try it some time. specially if your scryer.

Thank you for your answers.

I finally got yesterday the paladin chest and gloves, after many many rushes (love shattered halls anyway).

I bought a korium belt. Once I'll get korium boots I think I'll have a nice spell power and mp5, with a few enchants.

I hope quests will really be easier :)

NB: easier is not the right word... my paladin never dies, compared to my other characters ! But she is so slow (especially without water to drink!)... mp5 + t3.5 bonus set to reduce consecrates' mana cost should help.
