Alt for a rogueFollow

Ok as title says I am currently rolling a rogue (lvl 53 atm) but am finding it a little tedious so I fancied a change.

I want a class thathas the ability to do both mellee and magic damage if possible, so i narrowed it down to pally or shammie my question to you experts is which one of these is:
a) easiest and funnest to lvl,
b) best at pvp
c)wanted in groups/raids/arena at end game

Also are any of the above getting mega nerfs/buffs in 2.3?

I'll be posting in both forums to get a well rounded point of view :)

TY in advance

a) What's easier or more fun to level is up to you. I love the Paladin's playstyle over the Shamman's but that's just me. I <3 having armor and heals(leather/mail vs. mail/plate). That being said, Shaman depending on spec is probably easier to level if you spec enhancement or elemntal. You can probably solo mobs quicker than a ret paladin speeced either of those two ways and still be able to use totems and heals to help during instances.

b) It's hard to determine who is "best" at PvP. Paladins are great because they can heal allies and take a bit of a beating before going down in battlegrounds and arenas. Shaman can heal allies and do some decent damage of their own typically. That's not to say Paladins can't damage either, especially as ret earlier in the game(and later if you have some great gear and know what you're doing). Shaman tend to be more offensive in this sense, and paladins more defensive. You can use that argument as a bottom line difference between the two classes, but that's over simplifying it.

c) Both Paladins and Shaman are wanted in groups/raids and arena in the end game. Paladins have turned into very viable tanks in endgame raids if specced protection and are very useful as healers if specced holy. Even some ret paladins have made their way into raids but this isn't as typical. Shaman I know are fantastic healers if specced resto with their totems and chain heals.

Someone else can answer the question on nerfs/buffs. I haven't really read into it yet.

I know my response has been mostly pro-paladin and from a paladin point of view. I just really enjoyed playing a paladin and still do, but that's because I like the playstyle. You have a rogue right now, and they are pretty much the king of DPS. Just know that paladins are not the best when it comes to DPS typically(they may actually be the worst). They are definately more of a defensive type class. In battlegrounds, I love to heal allies, and lets say if a rogue gets the drop on me(you can probably elaborate on this) I can take a few hits and maybe a teammate can help me take him out. If you want heals plus some DPS, I would reccomend a Shaman over a Paladin, but again, don't rule ret paladins out. They can kick some *** if you know what you are doing.

All jabbering aside, it all depends on you. Try both up to 20 and find out which you like more.

i personally love the pally class. i lvl'd my first pally holy, currently lvl'ing a second one after getting a hunter to 52, and a rogue to 36, and getting tired of both. so i'm biased and i admit it. i love everythng about the pally.... while both pallies and shammys have melee and spell damage abilities, the pally is more focused on either tanking (prot) or healing (holy). ret does good melee damage boosted to a certain degree by spell damage, but this isn't a very popular spec beyond leveling. shamans have decent melee and ranged spell dps talent trees and may be more what you're looking for in that sense.

i only got a shammy to lvl 17 before i got tired of it and deleted it. but thats me. i think both though will be easy to lvl. they both have high survivability (pally=plate+healing; shammy=damage reducing totem+healing) and both can be specc'd to be fairly fast killers for leveling.

well, i never played as a shammy in pvp, but i hate trying to get through their grounding totem.. as a holy pally i'm pretty much always the top healer in bgs and even my ret is often top healing when thats my mood... and can be close to top in damage when thats my mood. you probably want to get an answer from someone more experienced than me though in pvp.

um, my holy pally is definitely popular for groups. my ret pally is at the moment (lvl 56) but i expect that to be less so as i get that one to outlands.... as a pally you'll be popular for taking hits and healing. as a shammy you'll be popular for healing and possibly dps (i have yet to see a really good dps shammy, but i hear about them...). both will be popular for their group buffs. shammys are popular for their totems which can provide 4 different enhancements at the same time. pallys are popular for their auras especially devotion aura (a good amount of bonus armor) and occassionally the resistance and concentration (30% less chance to have casting interrupted) aura's. also pallys have their blesings, which are some of the most flexible, useful buffs in the game. in the end if you want to heal (which it doesn't sound like) either one works. if you want melee dps both are capable but shammys are preferred at end game. if you want to be a caster dps with moderate melee too, then you probably have to go shammy.

hope this helps some.

A.) Easiest and most fun to level? Hunter/Warlock

B.) Best at pvp? Rogue maybe warlock

C.) Wanted in groups/raids/arena? Paladin, warrior, priest

Don't think this has helped, but it answered your questions.

Wouldn't say the last poster actually answered the questions like he said as it specifically states between Shaman and Paladin, but meh.

Anyways, my take on it would be this:
a) As mentioned, this depends on what you like personally. I found my Paladin easier to level cause I have so much more downtime leveling my Shaman then I ever did with my Paladin. I could also take out tougher opponents with my Paladin, as well as groups, much easier than with my Shaman (level 45 so far). Shaman are more interactive though, and offense oriented.

b) I never PvPed with my Paladin, but did for a while with my Shaman, twinked at level 29. I must say I had a blast with my Shaman in the BGs. Nothing could kill me 1on1, most times not even 2on1. Not sure what this is like at the higher levels though, if it's the same or not.

c) Groups: tanks and healers are ALWAYS in demand, so if you spec Resto (Shaman) or Prot/Holy (Paladin) I can almost guarantee that you'll be able to find groups. If you want to be a DPSer Enhancement/Elemental Shaman are much more desired then Ret Paladins come end game.

Raids: Same as groups, tank or healer you should be able to find your way into raids. DPS, Shaman still more likely than Paladin, at least for Alliance.

Arena: Not a lot of experience here, but I'd have to guess that Paladins are more desirable, if Holy. Something about having a healer with uninterruptable heals, and that can go immune for 12 seconds :)

Last: haven't studied the Shaman changes yet, but Paladins are getting some very nice buffs: 10% more Stamina for Prot, and threat reduction for Ret.

If you think leveling a rogue is tedious, do not roll a prot paladin. Perhaps ret is the way to go, I know little of the tree. Prot pallies are actually amazing solo artists, taking on multiple (melee) mobs of a slightly higher level with the right application of Seals, but those fights w...i..l..l..t..a..k....e..f....o...r.e..v...e....r. For example, my prot pally took out Tethis and the top tiger in the STV questline (name escaping me now) w/o potions or help, both mobs being a level or two higher than me at the time. The tiger fight took at least 15mins, though I admit I didn't actually time it.

Healing in PvP is, IMHO, more exciting than dpsing. I found nothing more pleasureable than standing there in AB with all my shiny plate armor, topping healing charts by whopping margins (not that it's all that hard as alliance...) all the while laughing at the warriors and rogues that were trying to take me down while I healed. Healadins are the giant immovable rocks of the healing world--you beat on them and beat on them and they just keep healing. Unfortunately, you can't get to 70 doing BGs.

Healers and tanks are almost always the most wanted for instances, so in that respect Pallies are more wanted in OL 5-mans and raiding. In Arena, I'm not so sure. Pallies used to give my teammate and I the most trouble, but these days it's droods and to a lesser extent shamans, though that's largely b/c you never know what role they are going to play when they come out of the gate. When you see a pally in Arena, that sumbitch is healing, bar none.
