Protection dpsFollow

My guild is at the point where we're trying to get gruul on farm. We tend to be just a touch behind on dps for this fight. So where do I fit in?

I am the third protection warrior in the guild gear wise. I'm not sure about later progression but being in this position I think I need to work on my dps for when I'm not needed to tank.

I want to keep my current tanking spec, but I need some help upping my dps.

What I've started with is going with a dual wield setup where I just spam devastate after sunders are up.

Hit. Do I need as much +hit as a fury warrior. I think that fury warriors abilities are set up to add lots of damage to their white hits, rather than my dps which would come from devastate mostly. Would I be better off just hitting the cap for my special skills? Or should I go for more so that my white hits are better? (my current +hit is 171, unbuffed)

Crit. How much crit should I shoot for with this type of build and where should I set crit as a priority? (my current crit % is 21%, unbuffed)

AP. I know that I should go for as much strength as I can get for AP, since kings and the 35pt prot talent boost this. But what is a good amount of attack power to shoot for at this point in progression? (my current AP is 1650, unbuffed)

I know this will never lead to anything spectacular but I dont want to be replaced for fights where I dont tank. Is this a foolish quest? Thanks for the input.

I out-DPS:ed several people as prot (amongst them a well geared mage) on the Shade of Aran fight. This is a high mobility fight (much like Gruul). I've got The Planar Edge and the dagger from Moroes as my DW.

You're doing mostly what I'm doing when I'm DPS:ing, what you have to consider is: WW > Devastate for DPS (especially post-2.3) so you should try to get that off whenever it's up. You only need 136 hit, so if you've got option to choose something else; do.

Since you don't have to consider flurry for you DPS: Go all-out +str. The only reason warriors pick crit over str is because of flurry. If you havn't got flurry, +AP yields much more DPS than crit. Don't get me wrong; don't avoid crit. Just put a big prio on +str.

And when comparing items, remember: 1 str = 1 crit (rating) = 2 AP. However you must also consider 1 str > 2 AP > 1 crit, and that without flurry, 1 str = ~3 crit.

Three Protection tanks? Meh... it's always seemed like a waste to have more than one or two, especially given the way Druids and Paladins are getting tanking buffs, but that's just me.

You can actually do decent DPS as Protection - it's largely a matter of gear. Whirlwind every cooldown and spam Devastate over and over, working in Heroic Strike as Rage allows. Try to itemize yourself for STR (Vitality) and Crit where available, with a smaller focus on +hit - Devastate is a huge source of your DPS, and it only needs 9% hit to be hitcapped.
