Stupid question for you...maybe.

I currently have the Crown of Endless Knowledge but just picked up Hydromancer's Headwrap and I can't decide what to use.

On the face of it, the Crown SEEMS better, but the Headwrap has sockets, including a meta socket. I should go with the Headwrap, right?

(Plus, what do I put in the meta socket? A meta gem no doubt...where / how do I grab one of those?)

Thanks for help.

Woah. Scratch that. I did a bit of research. It's a no-brainer. Sorry.

Now - meta gems. Most require at least 2 red gems, but only one piece of my gear contains a red gem. Seems unlikely I'll get another any time soon and I'll have the Headwrap for a while. So do I go for one that just requires more blue then yellow? Seems a waste, given the rest.

Question is - what else can I get that contains a red gem socket, besides my Shattrath Wraps?

This might help...

Well to be honest you have some pretty poor gear. The best thing for you would be a few karazhan runs. already the first boss attumen drops some really really nice glovesm i still use them and i prefer them over the t4 gloves. The third Boss in Karazhan drops some great boots with two sockets as well.
Also i saw you socketed to get the socket-bonus (at least it looks like it to me) which sometimes can be nice, but somtimes just put more weight on the sockets you need, both for yourself and the meta-gem requirements.

you can put a red gem into any socket you want, they don't have to match the color of the socket. The only reason the gems sockets have colors is for the little bonus you get from them.

For example, your FSW has a yellow and a blue. If you put a yellow and blue gem into them you get the + 3 spell hit rating bonus, but you can just as easily put 2 red gems into the sockets. You will lose the +3 spell hit bonus but you will gain a meta gem.

Or better yet, you can socket an orange gem into the yellow slot and/or a purple gem into the blue spot. This will not only get you the socket bonus as the orange counts for yellow, and purple for blue, but it will also give you your meta gem as both the orange and purple count for red gems.

But whatever the case, just remember that you don't have to put certain gems in certain sockets, if you only have a blue socket but found a really nice red gem go ahead and pop it in. Just beware that once a gem is socketed it's there for good, you can't get it back, you can just replace it.

Oaken - it's a fair point on my gear. But raiding is off at the moment thanks to a lack of people to raid with. I could ask around, I know, but I think that a bit cheeky! Plus, I ain't even got the keys for Heroics yet. Time for 5-mans is at a premium, so you can see what options I have for radiing! I'm going after PvP gear at the moment. Some of it looks viable for PvE and 5-mans, so...

Butch - Thanks! I had completely forgotten about that. The socket bonus ain't all that and I could have mixed and matched way better. Doh! Current meta gems on the AH are pretty poor, so I;m waiting it out. If it doesn't improve I'll gor for the spellcast / stun resist I think. Good for PvP and seeing as I'm after the staf from Alterac Valley...

(I wasted a lot of money here on gems...ah, well.)

Well, it weren't me! And so you did - though he was clearer. ;o)

Why do you give a f*** what your rating is anyway?

I didnt rate you down (I never do that) but this above sounds very cocky and is far from helpful.

Some of us dont have possibility to raid anything, not even Kara. Some of us maybe dont want to, I for example cannot say I could stand company of any 10 people on my server for more than 3 minutes.

Inoperante, I socketed all my stuff matchingly and I dont feel I lost much. I used mixture of +spell damage, +crit(hit) and +sta in all sockets. I think you can check my armory link any time just mind that all I actually do now with that toon is farming :)
For (eventually) something else some day I have spellstrike set mats ready but right now I am perfectly satisfied with battlecast.

Meta sockets I had in some other pieces and I played with meta gems but tbh I dont think they are worth giving double gold over coloured ones.

Thanks, Sethy.

I've looked at your Armory already. :o)

I deffo want that Girdle you're wearing - where do I get the recipe for the tailoring?

As for the rest...I'm gonna PvP it. Yeah, it's more suited to PvP, but looking at my gear, it's also more suited than that to 5-mans and questing / farming.

Let's face it, there's always something better to get, but as someone who can currently on ly quest and 5-man there's a limit.

As for Kara, can I even get in there without completing the attunement quest line? And if not, how the hell am I supposed to complete it without a flying mount? And how am I supposed to raise over 5k of Gold in the time I have?

You see my dilemma... :o)

As for Oaken - yes you do, you're very helpful. If someone is rating you down...sow what?! Sethy would have taken offence to your comment...I didn't. Whatever...you have a point...but it's hardly breaking my heart. You oh so sensitive soul, you...

According to Alla its a world drop. A very special friend of mine bought it in AH and I got it as a present.
You can find someone with pattern, collect mats and pay for the nether. It is pretty expensive tho...

You cannot get into Kara without a key. But completing the quest line leads you through some instances you should really run no matter to get some better gear, even few times.
I ran SL plenty of times to get that sword in example.

There seems so be sort of normal progress once you hit 70. You start running some instances that give you loot to change from your quested greens, then you run some harder instances with even better loot, then you add bit of rep rewards... they you run heroics for badsges/better loot/whatever. And then you are supposed to go to 10 mans like Kara.
By that time you have good enough gear and experience for it.

What I see all around me is freshly dinged 70ies in maybe 2 pieces of blues rushing straight into Karazhan. All they want is to be babysitted for key quest and off they go. Like its a last train they have to catch or it will be gone.

You dont need epic flying mount to get to TK, but if you lack 900 gold for ordinary one I would say you should just put everything else aside and farm some cash.
Took me some 2 months to get 5k for epic flyer. If you play less it will take you longer but eventually you will get there.
There is no need to go jumping on some things if you cannot do them now, simply go do something else.
Its just a game anyway.

Would it be worth it to take up eng. to craft the epic caster goggles?

I won't be buying it. I WILL keep trying for the drop though. Thanks.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I'm quite happy to do that too. With my current group of WoW 'friends' I'll never end up running Kara anyway, it'd have to be from an inv from strangers. I keep getting invites to do heroics in Outlands but I am nowhere near that either.

As you say, it's just a game - I'm quite happy to clear my quest log, sort out Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley (as I have barely touched them), do BGs and the odd 5-man when I have time.

I guess I was looking at short cuts to better gear. You've well and truly slapped my hand on that one, my dear!

Though in a bid to do it, I'm going for this: High Warlord's War Staff

Still not decided whether or not to go for blue or purple though. I mean, blue is PvP friendly, while purple is MAYBE better suited to PvE. This bloody game is FULL of dilemmas!! Any opinions, anyone?

Now to add something to your very helpful post:

1. L2type
2. Some people have a life.
3. Players like you are reason I cannot stand them. I played other games with mature and lovely people. WoW is too full of spoiled brats without manners and morals. Those that think some pixel-gear or forum rating actually mean something in life.

I didnt really mean to slap you, honestly :)
I see nothing wrong in looking for better gear (in shortcuts or longer way) as long as you can afford it or have some means to do it.

As far as I see you are troubling yourself over things you cannot change fast and/or so easy. Therefore I simply pointed out its just a game really and you can take it just as easy as it suits you. No "need to get promotion to pay for better apartment because your wife is expecting a new baby" kind of haste, if you know what I mean.
Simply do not let yourself be misled by general lets-rush-for-better-gear-at-any-cost attitude. Do it on your own pace.

As far as staves go, the blue one seems lot better to me.
Few suggestions for *shortcuts* :p
Battle Mage's Baton is better than your current one too and is quite easy to get at 70... there are always people doing that quest and needing help.
The Bringer of Death I had after that one, cost me 100g in AH.

When you manage to run KoT or SL you can aim at rep/Murmur sword that can be nice with some decent offhand. Or farm HH rep (I havent got to that one yet because I very much enjoy playing my hunter right now and I dont have time for both).

Oaken, I was the one that rated you down, and for a very simple reason, you tend Oaken, I was the one that rated you down, and for a very simple reason, you tend to talk down to people while giving advice. While your advice is good the way you give it can put a sour taste in peoples mouths.
When I first hit 60 about a month before BC came out I came to the forum as a noob and asked a noobish question. I got an answer but it was 1 line mixed into 3-4 paragraphs about how I suck. Not exactly the kind of advice i was looking for, so i went elsewhere. I've since come back to Alla and learned alot more here than the other forum, thanks in part to people like you. Yet it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth when someone asks a question about gems and the first thing a helpful reply does is say your gear is crap, get better gear.

Inoperante, seeing as how you enjoy the pvp side of life I would suggest trying to form an arena team as soon as possible. Even if you suck in arena (like me) you still get a few points every week for little time played and the arena season 2 is around Serpentshrine Cavern's equivalent for pvp. However if arena is not your bag but you still like doing BGs with the next patch they are moving season 1 to honor points so you can get them that way too. They are also reworking most of the pvp gear with the next patch as well, so if you have a bunch of point to spend in a few weeks you might wanna hold out for a bit.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Gladiator%27s_War_Staff <---Season 1 staff soon to go to honor points.

Oh, I don't mind. The occasional slap is quite enjoyable.. ;o)

That baton I ALMOST got this morning. Dammit. Must go complete that now. Looks quite funky too. Maybe I'll get both - one for PvP, one for everything else.

I like the Bringer of Death too, but I'm not likely to get it any time soon at those drop rates(!) and I don't see the need to buy it when I can get the War Staff or the baton.

I quite enjoy running Alterac Valley over and over as well.
