Drain Tanking
Minimum level: 23-24
Mandatory Talents: 5/5 Fel Concentration
Boosting Talents: 2/2 Soul Siphon, 1/5 Shadow Embrace, 2/2 Nightfall, 1/1 Siphon Life
Description:
This is the reverse to Hunterlocking: aside from the opening moves, the warlock is tanking instead of the pet. The technique is again deceptively simple: send your pet, cast your dots, life tap, drain life. If you have Nightfall, cast your instant shadowbolts at the end of a drain life. The point though, is that instead of using the voidwalker and casting with finesse, you will strive to get the monster turn on you once you're done casting your DoTs and life tap. To speed up damage output you will use a succubus or, situationally, a felhunter as your primary pet. In general, to maximize exp / hour, you will mainyl concentrate on monsters 2-3 levels below yours (whereas drain hunting would allow you to fight higher stuff) and avoid getting more than 1 add. In the later levels, though, this is enough to take on yellow elites without breaking too much of a sweat.

The above works fine at lower levels. Once you hit around 40-ish I have a short guide I wrote that might help, and some of the principles apply even in your 20's and 30's.

It works a bit better at 24 or 25, when you have 5/5 in the talent that makes you 70% resistant to interrupts on Life Drain.

To be honest, it also helps to have some sta gear. Don't just start out drain tanking by taking on 4 yellows. You'll get zotzed - unless you're very good.

Start of by doing one yellow. Then say a yellow and a green, or three greens. Work your way up. Pay attention - and be thinking "what can I do to make this work better" - don't fall into a rut.

That's why drain tanking appeals to so many people. It can be more challenging than drain hunting, which is predictable - perfectly okay - but safer and more predictable. Once you master drain tanking, you'll be surprised what you can pull off.

Look for cheap "of sta" and "of the eagle" gear on the AH. Quest for items that give sta or sta and int. Get healing potions, keep health stones ready. Things can go wrong drain tanking, and if you're not ready, you'll die (or you'll have to run).

I do this on my lock alt, though I just kind of came up with it on my own. I'm used to my priest and don't pull more than one mob at once, but I can chain-pull for literally hours on end without anything but lifetap and the occasional bandage/dark pact after an accidental double or triple pull. Pull with Siphon, CoA, Corr, lifetap, drain until dead, lifetap whenever I'm at full.

like IponemaGirl said ... and i think when you get in a situation where you are managing like 2-3 mobs in a pull while drain tanking one, and having the pet manage the other two with just dots on or something is what trains us for our "OP" QQ from everyone. drain tanking and such helped me w/ pvp cause of managing mutliple mobs at once or w/e.

^this all makes a lot of sense in my head, but doesn't look so on paper? haha.
