Difficulty DPS'ingFollow

I have a level 63 retribution pally. I mainly play solo so I have to do most quests alone. I am seeing that there are a lot of quests in the 60's that require groups. I am thinking of doing these as I get higher in level but until then, I am even having trouble soloing mobs of equal or 1-2 levels higher than me. I was wondering if I should respec as holy or protection and I would have better success? Also, can someone who is experienced in the class take a look at my character and tell me where I can improve in talents and equipment and if you think I should respec?

By the way, I am aware of the fact that I don't have a lot or rares. I don't pvp or do lot of instances although if I do respec to holy or protection, I plan or doing instances more hopefully looting some good stuff.

from a ret pally: respec Holy. heal as many instances as possible. lvl to 70. switch back to Ret and complete all those quests. this will allow you to learn the class and also maximize your rep gain. gl

I did 60-70 as Holy and it wasn't so bad. Actually soloed many of the group quests.

Dunno if I'd advise to go Holy now because you already missed out on some nice +SpellDmg gear that could help you solo, but if you do the rest in instances it shouldn't matter so much as you'll build up a set quickly enough. Or maybe you could try to get at least some gear before going Holy. Up to you.

Your current gear seems alright. I'm not Ret expert, however. The spec could be worked on a bit if you really wanted to remain Ret for the rest of the leveling process, or even beyond that. I can hardly suggest a build, but I would try to at least reach the top of the Ret tree before investing elsewhere.

Just my thoughts.

I did 61~68 as a 10 holy/xprot/11 ret, which allowed me to tank in instances, and have SoC for soloing. Had two sets of gear for tanking and for dpsing. Reckoning, when it procced, would usually take out about half the mobs health by the time it was over, especially with an SoC proc almost every time, 3 hits for the price of one.

I just switched to Holy from Ret yesterday, and I hate it. It takes forever to kill anyone. Given you may be able to handle mobs better. I am gonna stick with it for a little while and see if it will grow on me...also I need to read up on the shockidin version. I have had only a day to throw together some gear together.

I also have the DamageMeter addon, and the only 2 classes as a Ret Pally I couldn't really hang with DPS'ing was the Mage and Rouge....Yes I could hang with Warriors....they would be ahead of me but it wasn't a landslide....the rouges did the most. This is obviously not knowing how well the other characters were being played.

But to conclude, I miss Ret badly....SoC is the shizzznit. Also with Ret, I was getting about 1000 holy crits and 700 melee, as holy I cant get over 700 holy crit and 400 melee.

yeah, i've been holy since i started. the key to holy fighting is specc'ing right and getting as much spell damage on your dps gear as possible. my holy shock crits for about 1.5k and seal of righteousness with a slow 2h'er is good. also judge often. you should be able to get at lest 400 dps. not ret pally dps, but good enough for solo'ing.

Jack, I'd like to see that build.

My Old Build

That's what I had at 61, with my next 5 points would be going into Argent Defender, then I respecced again at around 67 or 68 to take out my Ret Talents as I found that SoB was better than SoC, and the patch for Imp. Holy Shield came out, then when I hit end-game I went into a 21holy/40 prot build for a while, until I settled into the spec I have now.

there's a problem with your build

first, ur not nearly as far as u should be in ret, drop divine purpose and get fanaticism and crusader strike

drop divine intel and get benidiction

drop spiritual focus and healing light (ur not gona waste ur mana on healing and hit like a girl)

good news: u will get best paladin skill ever : seal of blood at lvl 64 (has about 18% more dmg than seal of command)

second, ur gear is not very decent, drop the fel iron gear cause u get no intel/agi
get some that give u str, agi, stam, intel. like items of the beast for e.g.

third, i noticed u put one in vangeance, aka the most important core telant in ret tree, max it out!

after that, u need a new battle strategy, know this
-dont heal with mana unless u will die (eat food and drink water or bandage)
-dont use concecration (u should know that)
-dont spam judge seal of command
-always use sancity aura
-always judge seal of crusader be4 u start atking

then u should lose health around the same rate as u lose mana, which means u will not stop for mana a little after u just ate food which gives u less down time

?? what? Since when? The two are both situational and there are a lot of factors.

Using a fast 2-hander will make this seal deal more DPS than Seal of Command, and the fact it can crit makes it shine in a raid situation since Vengeance is similar to a fury warrior's Flurry in terms of how it increases the paladin's DPS.

Different gear and different weapons effect your DPS in totally different ways. Im not saying that SoB not better than SoC, but there is no way you can generalize "has 18% more dmg".

Well, while that spec may have worked a bit for what you did (I guess since changes have come it's different anyway) I don't think it's what I'm looking for. But for me SoC >>>>>> SoB, simply because I can't get SoB (alliance). Why they didn't just give both to all pallys is beyond me.

Mainly because of our lore. It wouldn't make to much sense for Alliance paladins.

Given the discussions we've had on this forum and the thread name...

Can I get an eyeroll emoticon and a headshake emoticon?

if you insist on staying Ret and soloing lets clear a few miscues:

your current spec: drop imp Might, Redoubt(wtf?), Vindication. max out Deflection and Dev Int. you will respec later at 70 to something more specific. for solo you need survival, mana, and punch.

your gear is fine for solo. when doing quests be sure to get tank and healing gear to stash away for later. work on BS too...going back to lvl it sucks.

if you want real Ret gear, hit the BGs and arenas later.

not true, if you keep your dmg meter out and compare w/ and w/o you will see a 2% gain max while solo.

dont! the mana to dmg ratio is meh. use JoW if anything at all.

use HoJ and Repent for CC on multi mobs. for single mobs they can be used for healing or dropping JoC.

Thanks for the help guys. I am now doing alot better and have very little problem doing dps and leveling up now. I've even jumped up a level and up to 64. Six more to 70!

On a similar subject, if I were to take AoE grinding gear (i.e. plate with stam, int, and SD) and get a 2H instead of a shield, then respec to a shockadin spec, how would that compare to a ret spec for questing? I know it probably wouldn't be that fast but...
A) I probably wouldnt need new gear (just a different weapon and maybe libram)
B) If my gear is of the "+Spell Damage and Healing" variety I probably wouldn't be that bad of a healer if I'm doing dungeon quests.
C) The name just sounds so cool.

I think you'd be gimping yourself pretty badly.

I've always seen Shockadin as an end-game PvP-only spec since you need a lot of your talent points just to achieve the Shockadin "status". So, for questing, I'm not sure... I think you'd have to burn a lot of mana on each mob and cause yourself too much downtime. Then again, I haven't tried it myself so maybe I'm wrong.

And yeah, being a healer with SpellDmg gear is alright for the most part of the first Outland instances. But then you should still try to collect a second healing set. If you try to be too lazy and get a single set to do everything you'll be seriously gimped. :P

i don't know how well the shockadin does, but i'd imagine its better than just holy. on that note...

this weekend a shaman in our guild respecc'd resto to take my place as healer wince i'm gonna be leaving in a couple months for Iraq. to help him get gear and practice, we've decided i'd help by doing what dps i can and being there to jump in if he starts to fall behind in healing. so far we've done only low to mid 60's instances. i'm still holy and sat i tanked in blood furnace w/ just 4 of us (all at 70, so it was easy). i came out ot there with more damage done than both the hunter and the mage. yesterday we did MT w/ a real tank and i was dps... kinda. i managed to keep up with the hunter again until the end when he got ahead by about 2%.

we'll be doing sl sometime this week with the shaman healing. we'll see how that goes.... i'll probably try to grab a couple more spell damage peices (been using my healing set except for about 3 peices w/ spell damage) to try to boost my contribution. i must say though.. it feels really weird beating on stuff w/ my healadin...

oh, yeah, the point of that is that i'm sure a properly specc'd shockadin with enough spell damage gear can put out major damage.

I leveled from 1to70 as Ret I had virtually no intel gear. I killed really fast, but i had to drink after killing 3 mobs. My tip is just wear warrior gear for now and get a mage buddy for water.

heres an idea: get more +spell damage if possible, and get more intellect.

Just my 2 cents.
