BG Kill CountFollow

I'm relatively new to BGs and warriors, so when I was in one with my lvl 19, I noticed that my kill rate was rather high when I only killed probably 6 or 7, I was credited with 20. So I'm going to ask the "dumb" question: does AOE effects "tag" the mob and give you credit even though someone else did the final blow?
