Oh dear. There have been lots of arguments going around about the hunter changes in 2.3, and these are about to get ratcheted up a significant notch:

World of Raids image

If this is for all hunter abilities, there will be no more LoSing hunters in Arena, no deadzone abuse, and a hell of a lot of complaining from everybody else.

Still, Multi-Shotting casters at point blank <3

BOLDED CAPITALISED EDIT: DRYSC HAS CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS A TOOLTIP ERROR AND THE ABILITY TO SHOOT IN MELEE RANGE IS A BUG THAT'S BEING RESOLVED.

Haha

We will drown in the tears of QQ...

But seriously I was happy with the apparent 3 yard range.

Hell, I was even happy with simply removing the deadzone.

There will be no point blank range for us hunter (and for that I'm really glad).
On PTR there seems to be a bug with our melee range which will of course not go live.

Those screenshots are normally because of very laggy conditions (which is also common on the PTR at times). You still have to be at least 5 or 6 yards away to fire your ranged weapon (and I have tested this on PTR the day before yesterday).

Yeah Deadzone will be removed/shortened but thats all. This will **** mages, especially frost mages which now can be attacked (even if swinging your melee weapon won't hurt very much).
Other classes will not be affected very much so please stop your whining about incoming whines...

And of course LOS hunters will still work very well (as you have to cast steady-shot and your opponent can still move...).
It will still be essential to be at some distance to your opponents (so that they won't get into your melee range where you still can do considerable less damage).

Congrats on making Sage Mulgrin, seems I've been away a long time :)

However, the latest change on the PTR seems to have changed our range further, as this is brand new info for the 25th October. TKA Something also brings us this news, and states

"The tooltip for all our shots/stings now read 1-35 yd range...There is, however, a sweet spot where you can use both ranged and melee abilities."

This seems to be a new change that is not related to lag, as the further screenshot on TKA seems to show. Therefore, LOSing hunters will be a lot harder, and we'll be able to do as much damage in melee as we can at ranged.

I guess it will still be beneficial to stay at range, just as it is for a caster class.

We'd still get slowed down if someone is hacking at us while we shoot them. Hmm...

It'd be nice to have the final definite word but I guess that could be elusive. :)

Ok, I was not at tkasomething for a few days.

However I bet this 1-35yards thing will not go live.
The melee range was somewhat buggy on PTR and I hope they just hotfixed the issue with this change.
Removing the dead zone is a nice idea thing, but giving us ranged skills while we are in melee range is not a very good idea and I believe Blizz is aware of that (this would really be a thing everyone could whine about if it would go live and I would join the crew of whiners).

Lol it would seem the Rogues in the other class forum are throwing a great big hissy fit over this one :)

Ooo... imagine getting shot at point blank in the face... >.<

And like the others have said, I don't think this will last.

I'm completely thrilled with the reduction in the deadzone, but I don't think we'll be able to use range at 1 yard. 3 or 5 yards maybe, but 1 yard would be a little overpowered.

I've thought it should be a talent, i.e. lowers the minimum range by 1/2/3 yards.

Some hunter shots are already point blank capable, so there is precedence. Blizz could just try out reducing range on certain shots to see how it impacts balance.

Current point blank 'ranged' skills:

Scattershot
Volley Shot

Near Term Possibles (at least in my mind):

Arcane Shot
Multi-Shot (would be heavily leaning towards OP but would be equivalent to some other caster stuff) (would probably need some other limitations to make fair)
Stings (never really understood why these 'spells' suffered ranged problems)

One thing that should always suffer a ranged issue is autoshot. That, to me, IS the hunter firing a bow or gun at range. Steady and aimed should also have the same ranged limitations as they are also non-magic based but that line is starting to blur with the changes.

The true Hunter 'spells' can probably be made point blank without much of a balance change. It might make the hunter more effective in Arena combat as well.

Personally, I think if Blizz left the Hunter alone, we'd be fine, and just give us some more utility on our pets. Barding would be good, then we could give the pets more resistance training in lieu of armor or stam training. Also, better skills/talents to make the pet more resistant to poisons and such, like a remove poison or curse talent like our 'healing' talent. This would improve the Hunter in PvP and PvE without going overboard.

I think I have Blizzard's reasoning figured out.

In the Fellowship of the Ring, Legolas is shooting Urkuk-hai dead at a clip we Hunters can only dream of. Several get to close. Legolas stabs them in the neck. I will have to go back and look, but I think that he pulls the arrow back out and shoots another Urkuk-hai with it.

We won't be shooting arrows in melee range, we will be stabbing with them. We get all our ranged bonuses because everyone who ever used a bow knows exactly how to stab someone with an arrow, automatically crit, and not break the shaft. I bet it won't even cost us ammo.

I am all about getting rid of the deadzone, but shooting something with an arrow that can hit me with a sword? No sense at all. (Guns, yeah, I get that, but if Guns can point blank and bows can't, you will never see a bow in game again.) I do not want this gift, because it will bring about a rather harsh nerf down the road.

Correct, best fight scene!

Ullo chaps, false alarm confirmed by MMOchamp, WoR and TKA. The fact that we can use melee and range abilities at the same time is a bug that they are currently working on fixing, and the tooltip should read 5-35 yards.

And that certainly was an awesome fight scene, you can't help but give props to Boromir for continuing as long as he did. I still think Haldir is way cooler than Legolas though (even though I barely remember him from the book :S).
