Crappy guild warrior - Where's the Guide?!Follow

I was in an all guild group for Steamvaults last night. We have a 70 warrior that has been in the guild for a while, is an officer, and he can't tank worth ****.

I would like to know why. So I came here looking for a guide to tanking with a warrior and, gasp, under the How to Tank section it says "Coming Soon." How do you guys not have a sticky for this?!? For shame!

I played with him for the first time last night. Prot Warrior tank, Druid Healer (Who I had cleared SLabs with the night before, so he was proven.), me SPriest, Mage, Hunter. Everyone had KTM. The mage and I had to severely nerf our DPS to avoid drawing aggro. We wiped 3 times in the first room. We wiped on a bog lord. He would mark a mob for Frost Trapping, and then send this little spell to pull the group that hit every mob in the group, making it take a while for the hunter to pull a mob off the tank. (This could have been the hunter, too, not sure on this one. It seems to me one aimed shot would be enough to overcome any threat that first little bouncing spell could produce. Not sure.)

Anyway, we tried to keep our threat below his, but we could barely put out dmg. Mobs were constantly coming off him to go for the healer.

Now for why I'm here:

Any ideas what was going on here? Were we doing something wrong?

If you were only using 1 cc and had two available, would you choose sheep or frost trap? I wanted sheep, he chose frost trap.

What is a/the right opening sequence for establishing threat on a group?

Should the mage and I have been able to use our normal spell rotations? Not full nuke mind you, but a standard rotation. He was geared better than any of us and prot specced.

Also, any good links to tanking guides? I googled it, but I don't know enough about the class to know the good from the bad.

Ummm.. tanking Pally?

Avengers Shield is the only thing I can think that would do that, unless the warriors have some odd thing I didn't know about... which could be possible.

/Smack forehead. He's a @#%^ing pally. Nm. I asked him how he was specced, he said Prot, and I immediately assumed Warrior. My knowledge of tanking FTL.

Regardless, where is your Tanking Guide, Warrior Forum? Now I gotta go copy and paste this in the Pally section. :)

I thought Pallys were supposed to be better than Warriors for tanking multiple mobs?

I don't have much experience with Pally tanking so I have no idea what he's doing wrong but it does sound like he needs a good, solid guide. I've gotten some good tips from the tankspot site though I have no idea if they've got a Pally section or not. I've only tanked as a Warrior so I tend to focus on that.

Bad thing is, I am leveling my Warrior for DPS and my Pally for tanking just because I have had bad experiece with Prot Tanks, the guild ones are good, just out of guild = mostly bad.

Never had a problem with a Pally tank (yet)

Killcali and Antonios- Awesome tanks :)

Sounds to me like a TPS issue. Just a thought.

prot pallies ftw on tanking multiple mobs easily. i've run with one in regular slabs who was geared pretty well (Magusiren and it was fun, even in the room with 5man pulls we didn't need any cc. he would just use that spell that bounces off all the mobs and keep them all on him. i was even able to keep WW off cd (on multiple mobs!) after giving him a 2-3k threat lead. the tough thing was focus firing on mobs since he didn't really mark, but once he started marking mobs went down easily.

OP - your problem probably came from unfocused fire, as any well-geared prot pally should be able to keep enough threat on him to keep mobs off the healer. also, sheep>trap, by far. it can be reapplied more quickly and more easily than ice trap.

Pallies can make awesome tanks when they're properly geared. It's a balancing act for them, as they need both +defense gear (which is typically prot warrior gear) and +spell damage gear (which allows them to AoE tank).

Once geared properly, they make runs much faster than most warrior mobs because you probably don't need any CC, and they're generating (pretty much) equal threat on all mobs in the pull. This allows the DPS to AoE, whirlwind, blade flurry, DoT up multiple mobs, to greatly reduce the amount of time required for each pull.

It defnitely sounds like a gear issue to me. If he doesn't have the +spell damage gear to put out enough threat, then DPS is going to be totally gimped. The fact that you were using any CC at all in SV is surprising. There aren't any pulls in there that a decently geared pally shouldn't be able to handle.

Having been specced prot pre-70, pallies have a huge array of threat-grabbing spells at their disposal. Did he have Improved Righeous Fury on (generates 90% more threat from holy damage) and use consecration?

There is an awesome tanking guild in the Pally forums I was looking at :)

I do believe it is even stickied!
