I know that somewhere between 30 and 40 prot becomes very useful for grinding, but I'm wondering at exactly what level that is. I know on my old pally I first switched at 30, but I've read people saying 35 and I know by 40 when you can have holy shield prot excels.

So my question is, where exactly in the line of 30-40 do you reccomend I respec from ret to prot?

I would say at least level 35:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZV0xIL0zx

5/5 Redoubt
5/5 Toughness
3/3 Shield Specialization
3/3 Improved Righteous Fury
4/5 Anticipation
5/5 Reckoning
1/5 Blessing of Sanctuary

I actually did mine at 40, but that was because I bought a bunch of green plate off of the AH.

Well, first off it's 1/1 not 1/5 Bosanc (sorry to correct the guy giving me help), but I was thinking that for levelling would it be faster to sub precision for shield spec? I remember on my pally I kept it's shield well updated, and sometimes I would end up blocking the full hit - thus getting no damage from Ret Aura. Also, if you take 0 damage, I believe reckoning won't proc, so that slows it down - and you also get less procs of redoubt (meaning you would maybe take less damage by NOT speccing into shield spec). Later on it would probably change, but that's what I saw at the mid-30's and mid-40's.

Your still gonna get hit a lot. At 35, your total avoidance is not gonna slow you down by not taking damage. You need as much avoidance and mitigation as possible. If you take to much damage, seal of light isn't going to keep you alive. You'll be using that as your form of healing for a long time. When you get Holy shield, you can start using seal of wisdom.

Well, here's my question on it...

If my block value is higher than their damage (which I have seen at the mid-levels), it's probably not going to proc redoubt when I get hit (since redoubt says "Any damaging attack, I'm assuming it would only proc in situations where Ret Aura would hit, which doesn't when you block the full attack). So, would I end up with more overall damage reduction from proccing redoubt more often (and with HS being up a lot, and redoubt probably proccing a lot I would probably want the ability for redoubt, reckoning, and Ret Aura to proc/activate when I get hit).

I understand what your saying, but you have a long way to go before that becomes an issue. You want to take as little damage as possible, no ifs, ands, or buts. You are going to get hit a lot, and will have plenty of procs from redoubt.

I can AOE grind all the mobs in SM Monestary(sp?) and take 0 damage the entire time, yet still be able to kill them all with reflection damage, and not from HS because those 8 charges get wiped away in a second.

So don't worry about the shield specialization, it's a great talent and it won't effect your aoe grinding much. Besides, BoSanc will be doing more damage than ret aura anyway.

I know it's 1/1, I dunno why I put 1/5, lol.

Ultimately it's up to you how you spread your points around. To me Shield Spec is/was more important than Precision which is why I chose it.

Well, I'll try it my way and if I get too much down time then I'll respec =P.

Everyone here is telling you to do Shield Spec so just ignore us.

You already have it in your head that you wont be able to do it with the shield spec. You aren't going to notice it's absence if you never got it in the first place.

So grab the shield spec, check it out, see if what you think will happen actually does happen, and then make an educated decision based off experience not just theorycraft (and not very good theorycraft at that).

I have done it, on my old pally. It's not like respeccing is hard (especially when you can farm on a main). And it's not like I came in here using my new favorite quote from the mage FAQ ("I am right, you are wrong if you disagree with me, so stfu and sit your dumbass down.") and saying something like "Well shield spec sucks so I'm not going to get it." I'm just saying I'm going to try something new and see if it works or not.
It's not that I'm not listening to you, it's just that following advice is usually my plan B. In video games, I'm usually wrong more than I'm right, but hey at least I learn (albeit the hard way).
