Pssst...exnay on the aidray!

Run level 70 5-mans (starting with Steamvaults) until you're certain you're comfortable with crowd control and occasionally tricky boss strategies. If you don't already have your flying mount, get one. Continue running non-heroic level 70 content until you've replaced most of your gear (one or two greens remaining should be fine, but no harm in swapping them all out). You can do some PvP (BGs especially, but arena as well) to upgrade to some very reasonable epics. Run dailies for gold, max out your professions, and work at clearing out any solo quests you might have remaining.

When you can work your way through non-heroic level 70 dungeons with confidence, you can start thinking about getting in some raid time. You'll no doubt already be geared and keyed for Kara by this point, and you'll have a much better chance to pick and choose which raid guild you want to join if raiding is your thing.

I've been playing my hunter for a while now and getting closer and closer to 70. But in outland instances that I've been running, I'm not allowed to DPS as much as I'm used to and am usually put on CC duty with my traps. I can understand how CC is important but as a hunter at lvl 70, is that all I'm going to be looking at doing in raids and instances?

If so, then I might as well just drop my hunter and lvl something else that will allow me to do what I want to in a group, instead of what I'm forced to do by the group.

A good Hunter will be able to manage crowd control and still keep dps up on a main target. Our crowd control role means we don't get to spend a fight from start to finish burning down a given target (ie. Rogue), but we can still do extremely respectable dps if we're got a handle on CC skills. In general, once the mob marked for me to trap is on its way into the trap I have set for it, my target is switched to the tank mob and I take up my normal shot rotation. After that, the only time I re-target the trap mob is if I have lost threat on it somehow and need to persuade it into the next trap.

Be thankful you have a crowd control ability. Classes which do not, like enhancement/elemental shamans, fury/arms warriors, shadow priests to some extent in instances where mind control doesn't work, are often taken into level 70 instances and especially heroics as a last resort. As a hunter, frost trap is the only almost universal form of crowd control. Learn to love it and use it well and it will gain you a good reputation along with groups to whatever instance you want. Be happy you're not mindlessly standing in one spot spamming the same spell over and over again til the target dies. Trapping, keeping yourself and your pet alive and watching over the healers makes playing a hunter fun!

agreed.. also the hunter is to my knowledge the only class that can give and take away threat and aggro. Misdirect and feign death are powerfull weapons. and also even distracting shot to a lesser extent.

One of the more fun aspects of playing a hunter is the mobility of a hunter. most clases are static they sit in one spot and do the same job.. but the hunter is almost always moving back and forth trapping and retrapping, wing clipping, scatter shotting, jump shotting.. you name it and we have a shot for it. Im still waiting for the "Get me a beer shot" but that may be a long ways off.

I dont understand how can someone complain about having CC ability.
I use my traps every day when I am soloing, all the time, and I am damn glad to have them.

Try warlock for a change, with much less capable pet tank and only fear as a very tricky *universal* CC.

I admit, I am not 70 on hunter yet, but I am managing to be main CC and usually top damage meters so far in instances like Ramparts, SP and Underbog. Didnt try Mana Tombs yet but it shouldnt be much different, no?

And what is that about "not being allowed to do dps"?
I have to make sure my trap is pretty far from the main mess because I dont want my tank to sustain himself on cleave, I have to trap casters, my target is usually the last one to kill (sometimes even after the sheep), I sometimes dont manage to target the main target before its dead if I have to pull caster very far... and I still never drop under 2nd dps place. How can someone forbid you to dps?

Maybe it will all change at 70 but for now I am damn proud to be the most reliable CC and top dps in groups. That is why I love to play my hunter in first place.
