I know it's a silly question, but are you sure your pet is using the highest rank of Growl available? You have to upgrade Growl once in a while at your trainer.

Do you also have Cower active when in PvE? That could be it.

A few thoughts on this:
1) Are you using gore? It is focus dump, sometimes your pet will gore and then not have the focus to growl when the cooldown is up.
2) Get up to date Growl. Silly, I know, just checking.
3) Do you notice your pets growl getting resisted? Sometimes things 4 and 5 levels higher shrug off growl. I know you said only 3 levels above you but it can still happen.

Just my thoughts, One thing that works like a champ is a threat meter. I am lost without mine. I can fight right on the threat envelope and get the most out of my dps at the same time.

I believe they implemented some kind of AI which prioritizes Growl over any other special ability, so that your pet always gets off a Growl, no matter how many abilities you have set to auto.

It does, but it is somewhat dodgy. With pure focus dumps like Claw and Gore, your Growl is likely to be delayed somewhat, which will hamper your pet's threat generation.

Same problem here. Although I have noticed that when I am fighting mobs even a bit higher certain things can happen. Rayne (my beloved Kamakhazi) will be doing reduced damage, be resisted, and sometime just miss too darn much. Generally she won't be hitting as hard and as often so my shots can pull away agro if I'm not careful. That's about it, but intimidation and those others help a bit.

I have the entire opposite problem.. I don't have Gore, so that might be why.

I'll even use Distracting Shot along with everything else and can't get anywhere near pulling off my pig. I mean, I'm level 45, and he gets about 1.4k threat in the first second after charging, while I might get at most 500, even if I start early.

Battles usually end with him about 4 times more threatening than I am.

Boars (from what I've seen) are the undisputed champions of generating threat right at the start of a fight. My Boar often spikes over 3k threat off of a Charge/Growl opener.

I used to have difficulty with my pet dumping all of its focus on dps abilities after the first charge/growl and that created problems with threat later in the fight. Now, when I'm in a solo PvE environment, the only abilities my pet has set to auto-cast are charge and growl. In group PvE, those are turned off (growl makes tanking difficult and charge is still bugged and has the very real potential to break traps) and only the direct dps abilities are on auto-cast.

If you've not invested talent points in a couple critical spots in the Beast Mastery and Marksmanship trees you can have difficulty with your pet generating enough focus. Also at level 33, you might not have enough talent points yet to cover both of these. Under Marksmanship get 'Go for the Throat'. In Beastmastery get 'Bestial Discipline'.

Before I got both of those talents which fixed the lack of focus problem, I typically had the attack talents 'bite', 'gore', 'claw' off auto also. For those I'd punch the button manually.

It can be done the other way too if I can wait about five seconds to help my pet out. I could have the attack talent on auto and growl off and still not pull aggro once I started DPS. Balancing threat that way was an amusing past time. If I pulled aggro with a crit, punching the growl button was often sufficient to reestablish aggro on my pet.

Only pick ONE focus dump for a soloing pet. Pick the best but more is really not necessary for soloing.

Morris can hold aggro against ANYTHING. He was tanking 69 mobs in SMV for me last night and I could dump a planet on them and they wouldn't leave Morris. He only has Growl and Bite active. Sometimes I let him be sneaky and prowl on the target but that's rare. He growls as often as it's available. GftT gives him some focus boost so he's always growling and always biting. Just as he runs out of focus, I usually crit to give him more.

If I gave him another focus dump, he'd always be out of focus and have less to growl with.

For PvP'ing, I'd use a different pet with different abilities. It's all about the burst damage there. Growl is irrelevant in PvP and a waste of focus.

You might want another pet for magic/mage based instances/adventuring. I'm going to do this myself. Get a pet for PO'ing mages and have all kinds of resistances to put up with them. Since I'd be assuming the group has a tank, using the pet as a tank is less important. Always good to have many kinds of help available!

Huh? 3k is a little low...

Porkrind build up an easy 6k threat off the charge/growl combo.

Okay, you guys have inspired me to do what's been needing to be done for quite some time...make a wow glossary that specifies words used in wow and the specific circumstances to use them in.

Another thought occurs to me, is your pet the same level as you or one lower. My boar doesn't hold hate well yet comparatively because I got him late in life and he is 7 levels lower than I am. In the process of bringing him up tho.

One helpful thing you can do is to download the Omen threat meter addon. You'll be able to see exactly what you're doing at the moment that a mob peels off of your pet and goes for you.

I find that working with a pet is similar to working with a tank in an instance party. You start off with slow damage, gradually increase, and finish off with your power moves.
