My mage is now 49 and i've decided to get those epic bracers from WSG.

Now, I'm wondering how best to use my spells. Last time, I used to stand and shoot, and that was in 10-19 bracket which was pretty simple. However, now is a totally different case.

Is using instant-casts the best possible way to inflict maximum damage effectively? If that's the case, and as a frost spec, I find that I only have 3 probable instant casts in the form of Fireblast, Cone of Cold and Arcane Explosion. Plus an almost-instant cast in the form of Scorch.
2.5 seconds of a Frostbolt seems like an eternity.

I tried using this style of PvPing and only found it to be half-meh. Usually, I would need a partner's help to really kill the opponent, unless its a warrior which I then proceed to kite.

So, can anyone tell me how to really PvP in the upper brackets? Spells used etc.
I find that I am more of support (FrostNova, Polymorph, Rank 1 frostbolt for slowing etc), which I don't really mind, but I would like to know if mages are meant for greater things in PvP.

Thanks alot.

You'd be surprised as to how many hard casts of frostbolt you can get in, does a lot more damage then scorch too, with a frost spec.
I would usually need around 10-15 scorches to take down a full hp warrior, this number of casts drops dramatically when I use frostbolt instead.
Scorch is just for when you can't make the time for a frostbolt.

Remember to use rank 1 poly for the lower mana cost, rank 1 frostbolt to snare is fine, but often you can open with a max rank, so try that if you can.

Eventually, frost pvp changes due to the arrival of ice lance, which makes everything way easier, but you can still pull off the shatter combos with a frostbolt+fireblast.

I don't use AE much unless someone has less then 5% hp and I don't have any other instants up.

I usually try to poly first, otherwise Dragons breath > Scorch > Fire blast, blast wave, frost nova, ice lance.

I also PVP'ed A LOT at 42-49... and did VERY WELL (as alliance even where we lose 95% of the time).

I was able to completely deck myself out in blues/epics from PVP rewards for the most part.

I used frostbolt all the time.

General tips:
*Play zoomed all the way out when you can. Go into interface options and max out camera distance so you can't get far back. This helps see the field better.

*Keep ice armor and ice barrier up as much as you can. Mana shield too when u flag cappin'.

*If you defending, go ahead and create your mana gems and get all your buffs up.

*GET QUARTZ. Not only so you can cast faster, but you can EASILY see what enemy is casting and how long it will take. Actually this is the most important thing of all really.

How you should play with a team (few tips):
*On WSG, do things like stand in bushes and get on the roof to cast those frostbolts. Not necc, but it is VERY effective. You'd be surprised how many people COMPLETELY miss you in bushes.

*I usually sheep the healers. I don't know if this is the best possible strat, but it has worked EVERY FRIGGIN TIME. I'd be in a 2 v 3, and keep the healer sheeped, and we'd usually come out with then win.

*Frost nova to hold, and AE/CoC the hell out of groups. Try to save the FN for when a group is all REALLY close together. This happens a lot b/c usually 3 melee's like to pound on 1 guy, then you FN them and CoC/AE all 3 at once. You will climb damage charts like this like crazy!

Now for 1 on 1's:
Warrior/Rogue/and Paladins too(Easy as hell you should never die to these 1 on 1):

Frost Nova, back up, frost bolt, kite, instants.. EASY CHEESY. I am human and so I could pop perception and basically kill every rogue I ever encountered. Even then I could rank 1 AE them and find them that way too.

Counter spell warriors when they far away to put them in battle so they can't charge you.

Trinket/blink/ice block out of Pala/Rogue/Warrior stuns if needed.

Treat paladin just like a warrior, but watch the quartz target bar for their heal cast. Right before they are done, CS it, then blow ALL YOUR instant like crazy at them. You need to kill them before they get to try it again. Smart paladins will heal EARLY on to get you to blow the CS. If they heal too late, you can then finish them off.

Mage:
Beat them to the sheep if you can. Fake cast a different school to get them to waste their CS. Ice block on a pom pyro mage. Dampen magic too.

Shamans:
All the shamans I encountered were twinked 49 ones. They shine at this level and can basically 1 hit you if things proc right. I'd usually just run and keep distance. If they get close to you, theyll kill you so fast.

Warlock's:
Run away from them. Get a remove curse bind so you can spam that thing. Don't get me wrong, you can go and try to kill them if they low enough level or just suck, but if they are just slightly good, you are in for a tough battle. Maybe not so much if you're an undead mage.

Priest:
Never really saw a lot, so I can't really say too much. I'd CS them and then do the normal routine I did on warriors/rogues ...

Druid:
Much like how u fight a warrior, but they will break all your freeze. Try to freeze them in bear form so they have morph OUT OF THAT and then they can't charge you. Keep distance.

Capping flag(I did this A LOT actually):
Get all your shields up, have trinket ready, ice block ready, full mana...

Drop down from roof, freeze, grab flag, 180 turn, blink.. start RUNNING!!!!

When they get close, Frost Nova, and keep blinking. Don't just waste blink if you see someone running at you. If you know they gonna catch u, save it, and then when the stun comes, blink out of it.

Ice block, pick back up flag, keep running... (nice cleanser, although this going away in 2.3).

Cold snap for ANOTHER freeze! ...
