Hunter gemming in generalFollow

What do hunters gem for in general, AP or AGI? I'd assume agi, but I'd rather have someone's opinion that has gemmed out hunters before I start wasting money on gems.

I would think that you'd want AP for BM & MM, but AGI for SV.

Yes, Attack power should be your focus If you're set for BM or MM but you should focus on Agility for Survival.

At least in PvE.

If you're PvP-ing stock up on stamina gems until you get about 10k Health, then focus on AP/AGI.

EDIT: said something silly.

Here's a list of my gems:

5 +8 Agi
5 +4 Crit/+8 AP
2 +4 Agi/+6 Stam
2 +8 AP/+6 Stam
1 +10 AP/+5 Crit
1 +16 AP

I'm MM spec, for what it's worth. I tend to prefer Agility over AP, since Agility affects more than just AP. I'm sure someone will say that's wrong, but it's my personal preference.

One of the +Stam gems is used so I can get a +4 Hit rating socket bonus and one is for a +3 Agi socket bonus. The other two, I should probably switch out for a better gem and ignore the socket bonus.

With a SV spec put in agi gems as much as you can (and add some other gems to get nice socket bonuses or meet the metasocket requirements).

The gap between AP and agi gems is not very big for BM and MM hunters.
If you are still upgrading your gear for raiding go for ap gems as you'll likely need a ton of AP still.

As soon as your gear gets better and you are raiding a lot more you want agi gems. Those benefit from blessing of kings, thus you get 8.8agi instead of 8agi from every gem. You'll also have a ton of attack power with good gear and putting in those agi gems increases both your attack power and your crit.

For what its worth I currently use the following gems (SV specced):

9 x 8agi
1 x 4agi / 4hit
1 x 4agi / 6sta
1 x 8crit rating
1 x 5crit / 6sta

Those 4 non read gems I need for my metasocket (12agi 3%crit damage) and for some socket requirements yielding another 12agi and 3resilence (I'd ignore this bonus but I still need the gem for my metagem).

BRK has suggested gems for beastmastery hunters and a few hints for the other trees.

I believe this falls under "You need to do some of your own research" heading. And that's a polite way to put it. There are some others on here that may flame you pretty hard for such a question that asks other people to do your homework for you.

WTF?
I thought the whole world agreed that BM should focus on ap, and SV should focus on agi?? Now, as a BM-hunter, I'm confused.
OK, there is a difference between PVP and PVE, but from the calculations I've seen at TKAsomething, for pure dps for a BM-specced hunter, 1 agi = 1,5 ap.
And as I recall it, that's not even taking the pet into consideration. Dps-wise it should gain even less by agi, since none of the +crit from agi benefits the pet (except of course the sligthly increased chance to be affected by ferocious inspiration).

Now, certainly, agi helps damage mitigation a bit as well, and this is very important in PVP, but are the numbers really large enough that you want to gimp your dps to such a great extent?
