thrown weapon or xbow?Follow

#1 Oct 17 2007 at 6:33 AM Rating: Decent
I have a level 10 warrior and sometimes use a thrown weapon to pull an individual. I have just bought a crossbow to try it out. I have not tried a throwing axe yet.

Which would be best in the long run?

Are these type of weapons of significance to a warrior?

Are they worth training up?

Thank you, in advance.

whichever gives you best stats...

unless you are a bored lvl 70 killing cows in starter zones, you will not be killing anything using your ranged weapon... it is primarily a pulling weapon and it's for the benefits to your stats.

some says that thrown weapon is good because you dont need additional slot in your bag for ammo... and at higher lvls, there are good thrown weapons that gives you nice stats...

so depends on being a arms warr, fury warr or prot warr... you will choose ranged weapons strictly for stats... or how cool they look...

choose ranged weps based on their stats and adjust their use accordingly. for instance, in my dw fury gear i use felsteel whisper knives, i may also use these when dealing with a tricky pull as the cast time is short. however, when i'm tanking i use melmorta's twilight longbow for the extra stam... its long cast time makes it unfavorable for tricky pulls though.

true... tanks pull frequently... so whatever weapon you have... get good with it... you have to time your shots well...

Yes but you can always ask a caster for an instant pull when too tricky

I believe thrown has a shorter casting time than shooting, i.e. 0.5 second throw vs. 1.5 second shoot. I could be wrong on that, however.

You don't have to get your skill up high on your pulling weapon since even a 'miss' will still aggro the creature. Of course it's nice to actually do a little damage but not necessary for the pull.

The stats are the main thing though you won't see many stats on ranged weapons for a while yet.

You should go visit the weapons trainers in the other major cities to learn to use more types of weapons. As a Warrior, you can learn almost every weapon in the game so it's useful to be able to switch to a new weapon and start using it as soon as you acquire it. Visiting the other weapon trainers might be a little tricky if you're Alliance as it is a bit of a trek to get from the Darnassus/Exodar area to the Stormwind/Ironforge area. Horde has it a little easier as it is easy to travel at low levels between Orgrimmar, Undercity and Silvermoon and the run to (or from) Thunder Bluff is long but not overly dangerous.

If by "are they worth training up" you mean spending the time to level them to the proficiency cap, then just take a run to the tram. Go inside, either the IF side or the SW side, and there are plenty of rats that spawn faster than you can kill them. I do this on every toon I need to level a new weapon type on. It is incredibly fast, and you can do this until it takes two kills to go up one level, or three kills if you have the patience. At that point you should be able to use the weapon without constantly missing.

I presently use Whirling Steel Axes, and previously used Thick Bronze Darts. I make both on my warrior, who is a Blacksmith.

I usually use "charge" while questing, so to keep my thrown skill up, I always take a second or two to throw at rats, snakes, and the like as I run along. But not bunnies, you must never kill bunnies!

You will max your ranged weapon skills, if you start doing serious raid tanking. But even if you miss, the mob will still be pulled, so it's no huge deal. BUT if your looking for min/max potential. Usually Xbows are higher top end damage, and if your only getting one shot in pre-combat, having that initial threat boost of xxx damage is very good.

You are correct. I just switched from a gun to throwing axes because the delay was starting to get annoying.

i see everyone saying this, but when my bow skill was much lower (<100), i would sometimes pull with it, visibly miss ("miss" would pop up), and the mob wouldn't notice. i still miss a bit now (220) but now the mob will aggro even if i miss.

weird bug, or just lag?

I'm not sure I've ever noticed this. None of my current ranged skills is maxed out yet but I've been thinking of switching to the thrown Felsteel Whisper Knives when I can get the mats together so I will try to pay attention since my current thrown skill is 101/350. I better do it soon though as my stack of bullets is dwindling. :)

I find it's easier to carry around 400 ammo than it is to repair my thrown weapon,or carry around extra thrown weapons. at least when the xbow/bow/gun is out of ammo, it still functions like a trinket.

Do you really go through that much ammo while pulling an instance? I think I used less than 50 bullets in the last instance I did and I pulled almost every fight.

I'm just really bad about remembering to check my ammo but I'm very faithful in remembering to repair so using a thrown weapon would mean that I would always be going into instances with 200 shots ready instead of finding myself running out of bullets half-way through (which I have only done once so far.)

Does dieing take 10% of your ammo away?

Huh?

Think about it, you carry 400 bullets, either way, your thrown/ranged weapon is going to beat up your dura%, so wether your using a Thrown or a Ranged, your still loosing Dura and when gone your f-ed.

So here is a question-

Would you rather carry 2x Thrown weapons?

or

Would you rather carry 2x Ranged weapons+ 1-2 Slots of ammo?

my point being, are you gonna have 2x your high end epics (2 gyro-balanced khorium destroiers)?

when you die, and when you throw your weapon, the items durability goes away. while a gun/xbow/bow does lose durability from dieing, you don't lose your ammo from dieing.

are you gonna carry around 2x felsteel knives? no.

When you run out of ammo from a thrown weapon you lose the items bonus to stats. when you run out of ammo for a gun/bow/xbow you keep your stats.
