A tankadin questionFollow

Hi I'm new to this site and this is my first post so I'll try to make this brief. I love to tank and considering that I used to play a pally of FF11 it just seemed natural that I would want to play one in WoW too. I'm wondering about gear though.
Considering that a "tankadin" really tanks with mana and not through damage/rage like a war/bear does...I couldn't just load up my draenei with stm/str and def gear like a war does.

Anyways..could someone look at my gear/setup and tell me if I'm going the right way with my pally.

I think I did that right...if not please someone tell me..and thanks in advance for any advice that I might be given.

As you can see, I have nothing for Int. Honestly, defense, stamina, and avoidance are the things you gear towards. Int is nice, but it is your last stat really.

at that low of a lvl your gear does not matter that much but for pally tanks in general you want to have stam., +spell dmg., and +def.

taking a quick look at your talents Imp. devo. aura is not really that useful of a talent it would be better to put that 5 points into redoubt. 99% of all endgame builds for pallys do not have Imp. devo.

At your level, just go for warrior gear, maaaaybe throw something in int, but it's not really necessary.

Fine tuning gear for tanking isnt really necessary until outlands, before that just grab whatever you can, just make sure it's mail if <40, plate if >=40. Since other classes have to save up for a mount at 40, I advise you to save up for a whole new plate set once you hit 40.

Here's a good tip, unless someone shows you credentials, NEVER let any other class tell you how to tank/play your Paladin. Come here, we will teach you right, but I've seen so much bad information coming from people who are not paladins and justify their information saying "Well I've been in BT so I know what I'm talking about" or something along those lines.

Several times I've seen people say "Oh you don't have enough spell damage, and you REALLY have a low mana pool, how are you going to tank?"

Great responces.

I'm working my first toon (my pally) and by trial and error fell in love with the prot tree. I also just hit outlands.

Through my reading and experience here is my two bits...

Until you get to outlands, don't really stress over gear. It all sucks. I replaced purple and blues with greens the first 2 lvls I was in Outlands. Also don't go spending your money on enchants... you'll just dump the gear when you hit Outlands.

Pick up what you can through running instances.

Your first mount is CHEEP!!! (i don't remember how much but cheep). Your epic mount will cost you about 500g. Keep that in mind as you get close to 60.

I've seen comments on both sides about Improved Devotion Aura. I choose it, not as a must but because in the end every bit of damage reduction i can get helps out with questing and your healer in the group (my alt being a Priest!).

Next, your right in that your threat comes from your Holy Damage, (Righteous Fury and the talent Improved Righteous Fury are a must). As such, hitting someone is kinda pointless... Yeah, that sounds bad, but hitting is second in this case. What you want for gear is + spell damage and Stam. Next would be strength and final int and agi.
Reason? Well, walk into a 6 mob pull. I've worked it well in a few ways...
1) Stand next to mage while he sheeps. As mobs get close send out Avenger's Shield to the ones you for sure want to keep and lay down some Conceration to keep the others. Pop your Holy Shiled and keep the Conceration comming.
2) Same as above except instead of letting a mage sheep you skip to pulling with your Avenger's Shield.
3)Run in and lay down some Conceration, pop your Holy Shiled and start wacking away.

As for bosses? Judge them with Seal of the Crusader, Seal yourself with Righteousness and defalt to Holy Shield and Conceration. (this is where the hitting really comes in). As you solo quest you'll find that Seal of Light is your friend, another place where hitting comes in handy.

I don't worry about mana too much, because as others heal you, you regain mana through Spiritual Attunement and pots to get you through battles. Drink between. Hence why Intil is no big deal for a Tankadin. A friendly mage might even give you some free water! Most people playing this game are pretty cool.

There are many thoughts out there, and I'm not going to say I'm right as I'm still learning myself. BUT there is one thing I think all tanks can agree upon. Get your defence to no less than 420 for end game. Gear? Stam and Str. Int and lastly Agi. For pallys, dodge and parry are nice too.

Have fun!!

Capt is a great resource for all things tankadin. however, i wouldn't want you to discourage someone from gearing heavy in +spell and int. take me for example :D

i basically went Prot
a)cuz SSC calls for more tanks
b)tired of running Ret while limited by the tank!

my goal is to have max avoidance while maintaning high +spell and +stam. its really paying off too. after a weeks worth of gearing i'm getting a reputation as a mob magnet. in my eyes, more threat equals more dmg output equals less healing equals quicker kills equals faster runs. i still have the swap outs for when threat is not a factor and mitigation is crucial. but until they're needed i'm gonna stay +spell heavy and let everyone open up like they wanted to.

There's nothing wrong with stacking spell damage. By all means, get as much of it as you can! The thing is, for a while, it actually hurts the Paladin to focus on spell damage Because with the gear available that Paladin will have to forfeit "tank" stats to get the spell damage. By the time one is in SSC they should have Tier 4 and equivalent gear which is good enough to keep the necessary avoidance AND adds spell damage. From then on getting more spell damage shouldn't be a conflicting issue with avoidance, but up through the Tier 4 raids spell damage must come second to tank stats.

Yeah, obviously if I could have everything else I wanted I would stack on Stamina and Spelldamage, but for a while until you get into your tier armor, it's very hard to balance the two. Here is what I believe should be priority (also quickest to get -> hardest to get)

1. ~200 Spelldamage (+ or - depending on playstyle, I have 161 and I do fine)
2. 490 Defense (Uncrittable)
3. >10k hp unbuffed
4. 102.4% Avoidance (Uncrushable)
5. Armor/More Spelldamage

As you flush out some, others will fill up as well.
