Outlands- what spec did you choose?Follow

#1 Oct 15 2007 at 2:22 PM Rating: Decent
So about 3 weeks ago I hit 58 went to Outland with my mage as Frost and started questing/doing instances to get my level up, and i am now 62. However, killing mobs was slower than I thought, and it was getting pretty boring just spamming frostbolts at the target all the time, so I am going to respec. I would like to have a spec that kills faster but doesn't rape my mana in 5 mobs, any ideas?
But anyway, I was wondering, which spec did you guys enjoy the most leveling through outlands? If it helps, i mostly Pve (just questing and instances). Any help/opinions would be appreciated.

I came in frost, then at 60 respec'd to fire. I stayed fire for a few levels, it was fun, and went back to frost at 66. They are both good.

edit - I dominated 5 man charts as fire. Frost...not so much.

I leveled as frost all the way to 70, it worked great for me, I couldn't decide if I liked arcane/frost or full frost better for leveling, I ended up doing about 17/0/44 or some combo like that so that I got a lot of hte +dmg/crit bonuses from both sides.

Deep Frost.

I switched over to Arcane/Fire about halfway through 66 to 67, and although it was pure joy getting some nice big pyroblasts, ultimatley, it just didn't seem worth it to me. I'm too used to the chilling effect.

However, I have started employing a new tactic. Basically, once I fire off a frostbolt, I follow it up immediatly with an ice lance. Adds a little extra DPS for me, and a nice crit on the off chance that Frostbite does proc. I have noticed that Icelance seems to crit a lot more, regardless of it's against a frozen target or not. Aside from that, the Water Elemental has been useful in a lot of hairy situations, saving me when I would be a dead mage walking had I not had it.

It is great fun when I do fire off the frostbolt/ice lance combo against a frozen target and both crit. Pyroblast?! What's a "Pyroblast"?

I am thinking about going with Arcane/Frost to deepen the mana/damage pool a bit. Probably something to skip PoM, since with all the instacasts I have at my disposal, getting off a fast frostbolt seems like a waste of talent points.

To me, the greatest joy is PvP. Going to Naxx is one thing, grinding is another, but finding an alliance dood whacking some mob in the distance, jumping on'em and blasting his *** off while he's like "WTF!?" is THE No.1 enjoyment this game can give me. It's priceless to feel the shame you put on the enemy when he's a pally leveled 3-4 above you and trying to gank you while grinding and you STILL kick the asses of the mobs and the guy.
That's what I like about this game. Mobs are just mobs, stupid AI controlled piles of 0's and 1's that will respawn in minutes and give shlt about you killin' them again and again.
Wasting the day of an enemy player and turning his char into a door-mat, THAT's something enjoyable.

And for all the above mentioned situations - Frost is teh only way to go.
Sure, I could crank up twice more damage with Fire, but Fire won't give me 21 sec FN cooldown, improved chill effects, water elemental with all his abilities, Ice Barrier or Ice Block.
Against players in world PvP, fire is a no-go*.
I don't care if the mob thinks me good or bad when i'm killing it the 1000th time.
I'd rather have the enemy player think "shlt dat dood is 3 lvls under me and still prawned me wtf nerf mages /cry !"

* - I've successfully grinded and PvPed with fire all the way down to lvl 51, but PvPing with Fire is just lame compared to Frost - you run around a lot instead of shooting cause you have far fewer ways to stop the target. And when you get jumped on... you're mostly screwed without Ice Block and Ice Barrier. And please get lost with Mana Shield, that thing is a choice between "I die now with a lot of mana" and "I die in 5 secs because I'm out of mana". It soaks up less than Ice Barrier, sucks hundreds of mana points in the process, lasts only 30 secs and has 30 sec CD (you can't recast it when you need to and can't have MS both active on you and ready to be recasted, unlike Ice Barrier with its duration of 60sec and Ice Floes'd cooldown of 24 sec).

I leveled as deep fire, arc/fire, and deep frost and found deep frost to be the best.

33 arcane, rest fire. A scorch build.

Basically just to shoot down any gankers quickly, being able to kill someone in about 3 seconds flat really helps if they get the jump on you. Even if it's just once in three minutes, it gives you the time to finish your mob off and get away.

I suppose the moral of this thread should be that you can level any way you'd like, arc/fire, arc/frost, full fire or full frost (I wouldn't advice full arc until you have some purplez). ;-) Isn't it awesome that there are so many ways that you can kill things with mages?

For fast levelling i would say frost too, as multiple mobs are easy to tke on. Same goes for a lot of elites and group quests that u can solo as a frost mage. Anyone remeber the 8 giants u have to kill in hellfire? They can be kited as frost, and killed without losing one health point. I can't imagine doing that to an elite giant few levels above you when fire.
