My lvl 31 hunter has nearly finished in Ashendale...where do I go next ? All adjacent lands seem hostile.
Thanks

Check that page for a chart that lists Azeroth areas and marks them by their level range.

Are you Alliance or Horde?

Either way, Stonetalon is a decent option though you are really too high for half the quests there. You are about the right level to be starting Desolace which is just south of Stonetalon. There should be quest chains directing you to other zones no matter which faction you play so look for quests telling you to go to other zones and you should find more quests to do while there.

If you are Alliance then you could head over to the Eastern Kingdoms and do quests in Wetlands, Duskwood, and the northern parts of Stranglethorn.

If you are Horde then the some of your options are to head south to Thousand Needles and then easterly along the road to Shimmering Flats and start those quests or you could go to Arathi or Stranglethorn.

Like Smallsword said, looking up the zone levels and picking a zone your level will give you quite a few good options.

You can do Shimmering Flats as Alliance too - it's pretty safe to get to (on a PvE server, anyway) - you just have to get past the guards at the Great Lift (southern end of the Barrens), and be a bit careful on your way east. All the quests (for Alliance, at least) come from the small enclave right in the middle of the flats.

It's a great area to pick up a couple of easy levels as a Hunter, and it'll give you some quests to start in Stranglethorn Vale too, although you might get sick of the travelling back and forth to complete all the quest chains, since the rewards aren't too special. If you do head to the Flats, don't forget to head through the mountains to the south and pick up the flight path in Gadgetzan.

Some of those story lines are ended.

The quest in the Howling Vale should lead you to eventually to Duskwood.

There are several quests in Ashenvale that send you to Stonetalon Mountains.

There are also quests in Ironforge and Stormwind that can send you out into other zones as well if you wander around and look for quest givers.

Typically, as you are finishing up one story line of quests, another story line or two get started to keep you moving on.
