I'm currently level 40, and using Whirlwind Axe. I'd like to know when and what should I upgrade to? The reason I can't decide is because a friend enchanted my axe with Savagery when I got it around Lv. 30, and I don't understand enough about the formulas and how speed / damage affects my abilities to know with what and when I should replace it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I upgraded my Whirlwind Sword with the Truesilver Champion. Lasted me till about 56 when a guildie gave me Destiny as a gift and then the Demonshear off the last boss in SM Strath.

When I was arms, I tend to ook for the top end damage of the weapon. The higher the better, don't really look at the speed as most of them are 3.3 and above. To me, the slower the weapon, the harder you hit and the bigger you crit :) Hope that helped.

The problem is that Savagery changes everything. It buffed my weapon up to like 61 DPS. But I'm not really sure if 61 DPS including Savagery is really the same as a weapon which actually says 61 DPS on the actual weapon, because if so I shouldn't replace it till i'm in my late 50s.

A Whirlwind Axe with savagery should last you a very long time.
That may very well last you till 51, in which you can go for this!
Ice Barbed Spear
And that weapon should last you till outlands.
Im guessing you have Poleaxe spec if u got ur whirlwind axe

I have WW Axe with +5 damage. Should I get savagery for it? I'm level 39 and have a weapon for levels 44 and 47, both with +str/+sta bonuses.

If the Whirlwind Axe with Savagery is 61 DPS, why would I go for this weapon which only has like 54 DPS? There's something I'm not understanding about the damage formulas I think.

A friend of mine who has warrior 70 is telling me my Whirlwind Axe is already outdated at 40. But the explanations do little to convince me, I guess because they don't involve very much math, which is a language I can speak.

Because I sure as hell can't afford it, and he could barely afford it as it is. He just did it because he was feeling silly.

That being said, is there seriously nobody around that understands the math behind this? I've posted on no less than 3 forums, and not a single person can explain how Savagery relates to weapon damage and abilities like Heroic Strike, Mortal Strike, etc.

savagery is a straight 70 AP increase on a 2h weapon. look at the PvE DPS faq for math pertaining to AP and DPS.

I did look at it.

Quote:
Attack Power will increase your DPS by 1 for every 14 Attack Power

Savagery = 70 Attack Power = 70/14 = 5 DPS

So, if Whirlwind Axe is 35.6 DPS according to the item description, why does my Armory Profile not show me as having 40.6 DPS? Instead, it shows me as having 67.9 DPS, calculated by (218 + 271) / 7.2

Here's a better question: How do I calculate the numbers 218 and 271 given that my weapon damage is 102-154 and I have Savagery?

Here's the text for Heroic Strike

Quote:
A strong attack that increases melee damage by 208 and causes a high amount of threat.

Now assuming no Savagery at all, am I to assume that instead of calculating the next attack based on my Weapon Damage (102-154) alone, it will use that number plus 208? So it would calculate the attack as if I had a weapon with 310-362 damage?

If so, then add Savagery which doesn't directly affect weapon damage, just Attack Power. Does it make my Heroic Strike stronger? According to the text of Heroic Strike, the damage of the ability is based off of the weapon damage.

Anyway, if you have a link to a FAQ that explains this in more detail please link it here. I read the Warrior FAQ in this forum which is what I thought you were talking about originally, but I don't see another FAQ like the PvE DPS faq you mentioned.

Your AP is also affected by your STR which is included in the Damage calculation with your Savagery enchant. So the weapon dps is only the 35.6 + 5. I'd say if you could find a 41 dps weapon it would be better, but I think that's still a very good weapon at your level.

savagery affects your AP which directly affects your weapon damage, which would directly make your HS hit harder.

if you look at your character list, the weapon damage there is not your actual weapon damage, but your damage AFTER all other stats are taken into consideration [AP/STR, Enrage, DW, etc.]. this is why the majority of 70's are sitting at 900+ max damage with 70 weapons. OBVIOUSLY a weapon by itself won't be doing 900 damage / hit.

also if you can't afford savagery, ask your friend to run strat a few times for righteous orbs so you can get crusader.

Thanks, I think I figured it out. My actual weapon says 102-154 damage, but my armory profile says 218-271. The difference appears to be my Weapon Speed * Attack Power / 14.

So 102 + 3.6 * 453 / 14 = 218, and likewise for 271.

So I guess in order to find a new weapon which will give me a higher Damage than my current weapon, I just have to take the stats of the new weapon and use 383 instead of 453 for the attack power, plug in the numbers, and see if it comes out higher than the average damage I currently have. Current Average Damage is 244.5, so I think I need WeaponDamage + 383*WeaponSpeed/14 > 244.5
, or W + 383S/14 > 244.5. The lowest level thing I can find that hangs is an Executioner's Cleaver, where the average damage comes out to like 265 or something.

Anyway thanks for the help, I think I understand it better now.

My recommedation would be to hang on to the axe until you hit lvl 51 and go to Alterac Valley. If yo udont like PvP, thats fine, just suck it up for 1 single match (hopefully you'll win) You'll spend alot of the match in the graveyard, but if you win, the quest reward is the Ice-barbed Spear.

You should be just peachy using that weapon until well into outlands, it has the best dps you will see for some time and the stats are outta sight.

FTR, I put a counterweight on mine to improve its speed a bit, its still a touch slow, but it hits like a trunk.
