About Druid Gear!
This is my first character, and I am currently at level 31. I keep hearing a lot of talk about getting three distinct sets of gear for my Druid. Since I can barely afford keeping one set of gear up to date, and more then once I had to decide which spells to buy as I couldn’t afford all of them (I farm a lot now so that isn’t a problem). Anyway, enough of my complaining, here are my questions…

How bad will I be if I try to establish a balance with one set?

Also, at what level will other players expect me have those three complete gear sets?

I don’t have a high level character to fund my low level Druid, should I abandon my druid and level another type of character first, just so I can afford to play a druid?

Are people really going to expect me to switch gear DURING a fight when the healer or tank fall and I have to cover?

Depending on the answers, my druid might just decide to solo to 60 and go live in the woods. (just joking)

You don't really need to start collecting that much gear until you are near level 70. Start saving up cash for your mount now and don't buy anything on the auction house unless your gear gets to be ten levels behind you. You don't need another character to fund a druid. Once anyone playing any class gets to outlands there is just tons of money to be had.

I wouldn't try to find one set of gear that you can use for healing and tanking and dpsing. You would be better off sticking to stam/agi/str gear (if you are feral) and just let people know that you cannot heal instances.

Oh,and you cannot change your armor while you are in combat, only weapons, so no on that last one.

At lvl 31 it isnt vital with 3 sets....but as you get higher in level (40-....),having one set only will limit you (alot)
This varies ,depending on whether you are feral or balance/resto

At level 70 I have 4000 mana in my feral gear, and 0 +healing, but in my healing set I have 9000 mana and +800 healing atm, just as an example...

The only thing you will accomplish by sticking to one set to cover all options,is limit yourself in all your roles.
You will do poor dps in cat,be a lesser tank in bear, and do squat dmg/healing as caster

And yes,in my experience, people will expect you to have the right gear for the job..

You cant switch gear in combat ,so that is not an issue for us ....but groupmembers may ask you to heal/tank/dps...according to the groupsetup...and if you are not prepared, getting kicked can happen.

I found that gearing was alot easier as balance, since spelldmg and healing went hand in hand mostly...and not being feral I was never expected to tank or go cat :)..and I had the mana needed to heal on my balance set anyway

But as a feral (my current spec of choice,I am still expected to carry a healing set in case its needed),so now I have cat set, bearset, and healing set :D

Having said all that, dont go mad with gear ..just keep an eye out for stuff that will compliment whatever role you are trying to fill, and get some biig bags :D

My druid was my first char, and I had no problem keeping up to date with gear, and still make a few $$ along the way :D

Looks like he nailed it but heres my 2copper anyway. I leveled Feral so I had my main set and my caster set. I found that I did just fine up into my 60's with just one Feral set. It wasnt until I neared the cap that I began to specialize them off into a Tank/DPS set.

Also My caster set up until current has been 100% made of quest rewards (when there wasn't a better option) and just drops. I never spent much money on my caster set as it was rare that I was asked to use it. It is not expensive to generate more than one set if you just collect odd peices.

So no you don't need to have 3 bags full of gear right now at lv31. and like frequenC said You can always tell parties you are not able to fill that role. But also FYI with my collected Caster set I have been able to main heal instances all the way through to 70. I'm sure I'm not the best healer, but I'm not aiming to be. I can get the job done if no one else is around.

Bottom line: Feral set for leveling, and keep a resto / healing set in case you want to run a dungeon. You will rarely do any balance work, people will want you to fill in the high demand spots of tank or healer.

with decent gear, you can main heal just about any pre-BC dungeon you like as feral spec, and even a few in outlands, depending on your resto set.

Yeah, this is what it comes to at lower levels. If you're Feral, you collect Leather stuff with Str, Agi and Stam. If, however, a quest can give you an option of either chosing something Feral that is inferior to your current piece in that slot or a Cloth +Int +Spirit piece, take it. It's your Caster/Healer set part. Just collect whatever looks like what you'd want to wear if you were to Heal/Cast/Tank/Dps.

Also on a side note, if you use add-ons, then I'd definetly get Outfitter, it'll be your crack.

Thanks for all the pointers! They were very helpful! And thanks as well for laying my fears to rest about the cost, as I was getting a little worried about funding a Druid.

Being feral, I just picked all the feral quest rewards. If there wasn't a feral reward or it wasn't an upgrade then I picked the healing cloth or leather rewards. If not then I grabbed the spell damage rewards.

Just doing this, I have about 1400+heal healing gear and +450 spelldamage gear without even trying. The only cost is what I lost by not DE'ing the rewards and selling the mats.
