So being who I am, when I want to socket my gear, I want to squeeze out the most dps possible. So I did all the math to figure out the best gemming strategies, and when to switch from one gem to another.

This data should probably go in the math sickie, so I hope azuarc will edit it in, but posting on the 4th page seemed to only guarantee that no one would see it. So here goes.

base line.

1 ap gem = 12 AP
1 agi gem = 6 agi
1 hit gem = 6 hit
1 crit gem = 6 crit

now we know that 14 AP = 1 dps. So 12 AP = 0.857 dps
(note that this is actually lower because you will be missing.)

15.75 hit rating = 1% dps. so 1 gem = 0.381% dps

22 crit rating = 1% dps. 1 gem = 0.273% dps.
(note that with mortal shots this is .355% dps)

1 agi gem = 6 AP + 0.15% crit = 0.428dps + 0.15% dps (0.195% with mortal shots)

The key here is to figure out at what point 0.381% of your dps is higher then 0.857 dps. Fortunately for us this is trivial.

0.00381*X = 0.857

X = 225 dps. so when your tooltip dps is above 225 it is better to socket +hit gems. Hit capped for bosses is 8.6% I believe that is 95 with surefooted and something else normally. (I can't remember off the top of my head help!)

Next step. When are crit gems better.

for no mortal shots X = 314 dps

with mortal shots X = 241 dps

The difference between Agi and AP gems are the comparison of 6 AP vs. 0.15% dps
.0015X = .428dps. X = 285dps with MS X = 219dps

In Summary, the raw numbers, without expose weakness, any agi buffs, or pet carryover taken into account are this.

hit gems are better then AP gems when you have over 225 tootip dps.

Crit gems are better when your tooltip dps is over 314, without mortal shots, or over 241, with mortal shots.

Agi gems are better then AP gems when your dps is over 285 without MS or 219 with MS.

There is more to come. AP carried over to pet, tier 2 gems etc etc. Please correct what I have posted so far and find my mistakes. Cheers.

Of course pets are important and crit doesn't carry over while AP does.

1 AP contributes .22AP towards your pet. I can't find any data for or against the assumption that 14 AP still is 1 dps, so I will go with that. Please if anyone knows better let me know.

I am writing this section for a BM build, so am assuming unleashed fury.

that means that 1 AP gem = .226 dps (((12*.22)/14)*1.2)

Total dps from one AP gem is now 1.083 dps.

for a hit gem to be equivalent you need a tooptip dps of 284.

for a crit gem you need a dps of 396 or 305 with MS.

NOTE:These values are slightly too high. The dps value I used from the AP gems is not taking into account the miss rate, which of course exists. at some point I'll probably add this all in.

edit: hmm, I was thinking about hit rating gems again. Seeing as my normal rotation is SS/auto and these numbers are all auto, that would actually double the effect of the hit gem. Making the cutoff, even for BM hunters 142. I'll have to think about this. Any comments?

SV time.

lightening reflexes increases your agility by 15% so a agi gem is now 6.9 agi.

also agility contributes 25% of it's value in attack power through expose weakness. this adds 1.725 AP per gem.

1 agi gem = 8.625 AP

So the comparison is 3.375 AP to .224% dps from crit with MS.

3.375 AP = .241 dps.

So for a SV an agi gem is better when your tooltip dps hits 107.

Obviously SV hunters always spec agi gems. Of course these numbers assume you can keep EW up. if you can't respec until you can.

There is more work that can be done here. I invite everyone else to correct my mistakes, point out any assumptions I made that are wrong, and add more math stuff. Enjoy.

I just started playing with gems last night. Wish I'd read this first. Although it is difficult to know where you will end up when you're only halfway through your gear wishlist, but it's great to know this information is available.

For my part, I socketed the middle of the road gems that are one or two stat points lower, but about a fifth of the price. At least until I have a gearset I will want to maintain for a while and I know what stats I need to build up.

Thanks for saving me the work, much appreciated :) Rate up.

I usually don't bother with the really good gems unless I'm putting it in either really good blue gear or epics. Make sure you'll keep it for a while, as they are a lot more expensive.
