ranged weapon questionFollow

I'm currently a 52 dwarf hunter. I've had the same gun since lvl 39 and can't seem to find any guns for my lvl. My question is should I try and bring up my bow skill and get a good bow until I hit outlands? Or does someone know of an instance that I can get a better gun. Thanks for any help.

You can filter your search to find guns at x level on the wowhead website (www.wowhead.com). You can also use a bow almost as well as a gun (as a dwarf) so go ahead and use a bow.

Get the Bloodseeker. All you have to do is win an AV. After, you go to one of the dwarves outside the entrance, north of Tarren Mill. Talk to him, pick up some gold and a kick-*** x-bow that will last you until you hit outlands.
I´m a Hordie and did this quest a long time ago, so the info might be a bit off, but the way I remember it, you don´t even have to pick up the quest in advance.

Learn Xbow skill and get to lvl 58 ;) then you'll get a great xbow from an easy quest.

Else, there are always some ranged weapons on AH.

(yes, you should have more then just a gunskill)

I did learn all the trainable skills, but at lvl 54, is it worth trying to get either the crossbow mentioned or a good bow from AH and then take the time to try and lvl up my skill to the same lvl as my gun skill? Wouldn't it be a little hard to essentially grind on the low lvl mobs first in order to up skill? I've looked on AH constantly and can only find guns for lvl 39 and lower, is that just because not many engineers make guns anymore due to the expensive mats?

Also unless I'm completely blind, I can't seem to find any info about PVP rewards for BG's and arena's. I ask because maybe if there is a decent gun pvp reward I'd just spend some time doing bg's for the badges to get the gun. thx for any info as always

no pvp gun reward, but a bow every x8 levels from WSG.
Also, you really want all 3 skills as high as yuo can get it to have all options open.

and its easy, just pick up a very cheap low level (and fast shooting) Crossbow and bow and a crapload of cheap arrows and start shooting low level mobs.
Your pet will have an easy time tanking and you'll never grab aggro and level super fast too.

hell, i skilled up my gunskill from 0-315 in 1 long haul (a couple of hours) when i got a gun at lvl 63.

Yes, it;'s well worth the effort. It's quite easy, really. Take your new weapon, fill your quiver/ammo pouch with cheap ammo, and go do some skinning of grey beasts, or mining of iron ore nodes, or collecting of easy herbs. Whatever plays to your Trades. Let the Pet tank, and fire away. Your new skill will rocket up very fast, and you'll get some salable items while you raise the skill.

There are some gaps where it's difficult to find ranged weapon upgrades. My memory is a bit faint, but I think that 54th you're at one of them. You need 58 for the AV quest reward bow (it's not a BG faction thing, you just need to pick up the quest and win a single AV), 60th for a couple Engineer made guns (which would be replaced very quickly once you hit BC), and there's not much else outside of Instances. Probably your best Instance grind would be Scholo for the Ancient Bone Bow. It's usable at 56th, but you if you're rested you might make the levels waiting for it to drop.

Your best bet is to level to 58th, pick up the AV bow, and head to Outlands. Grinding BG faction will be slower, and you'll still be 54th at the end of the day.
If you really want to do this via BGs, go speak to the BG quartermasters. You can see what they sell and plan accordingly. I don't recall if there are any decent ranged rewards, but I never focused on BGs for my ranged weapon upgrades, so there may be some if you look around.

You can get the crossbow from Alterac Valley (at least, it's a crossbow in the Alliance side) at 51.

And at 58 you might as well go to Outlands! :)

For the original poster's question... no, there's not a lot out there.

However I turned up a quest in Western Plaguelands with a gun reward --

http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=5058

With enough materials, you could get an engineer to craft you the Dark Iron Rifle --

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=16004

There's another gun you can get from a questline in the EPL. The first one requires turning in a bunch of stuff, though --

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=16992

And of course there are some that drop from dungeons.

To level up your bow/xbo skill, go to westfall and find a defias pathfinder. They have a ranged attack they can use forever. Once you're there, spam the following macro until you go OOM, then wait for it to go back up. If you start getting low on health (i.e. after 10 minutes or so) just arcane shot him, eat, and pull another.

To level up any weapon skill, ranged or melee(yes you should keep these leveled as well), go to Blasted Lands, find the Servents of XXXX(there are 4 different types I think), they usually stand next to a crystal. These guys are imortal unless you are doing a specific quest, your pet can tank them, you can wail away non-stop on them, throwing out Mend Pets here and there. Me and 2 lvl 70s were wailing on one guy for 4 hours, I leveled my crossbow from 0 to 294(I think 295 was the max, what ever the max is at lvl 58), then I leveled my 2-handed axe from 0-294 all in that one stretch.

At level 52 this would be quite hard though, as the mobs are level 55 or something. This really only becomes viable after 60. And is only afkable at 70

52 hunter should have no problems with a 55 non elite. I still say it would be better than going and fighting a mob that you would kill in a few hits.

Something I noticed that was kind of unique to my ranged weapon leveling, in that my first few levels I wasn't missing, unlike my melee weapons that would be dodged, parried, or flat out miss for the first 50-100 levels. The ranged weapons would hit, but be glancing blows. So if you go and fight low level mobs, you would still be killing them rather quickly.

So the killing 2 birds with one stone advice is good, with killing things that you can skin. But for people like me that don't skin, that doesn't help too much. But I think a lvl 52 should be ok leveling on a 55, but obviously you could just let things run their course and you would have to take a few mana breaks.

Yeah, I've found my second BM hunter (I should probably be ashamed I created a second one on another server) at level 34 is having little difficulty with one level 38 mob. I just have to give my pet several seconds to firmly grab aggro before helping out. I've found a scorpid with poison works best for single mobs.

I've been buying armor and weapons at auction ahead of need, providing they're cheap of course. I've been watching for level 34-45 armor with 'of the falcon' and 'of agility'.

If you're on Whisperwind send Sebaceous a mail message. He can make you a dark iron rifle.

I have certain ranged weapon types I prefer certain races to use. But while I would rather have my dwarf hunter using a gun, I’ll drop his ammo pouch in the bank and take up a bow and quiver if I find one that is a significant upgrade. But I’ll be keeping my eye out for a good gun to replace it.

Level 70 is a good example. There’s a blue level 70 bow, Valanos’ Longbow, that is very common on my alliance server. I can pick one up for 30 gold. So both my 70 night elf and my 70 dwarf are using one. I’ll happily have Cashara equip a gun when I can find a better one, but that’s too good of a bow to pass up for the price.

For those that do a lot of instances or PvP a lot there are more options available. But for those of us with limited options, its best to learn all the ranged weapon skills. And as has been pointed out, skilling them up is not very difficult.
