New Mage - New WoW - Spec QuestionsFollow

Ok, I'm new to the mage class and new to WoW in general. I'm at level 8 or 9. Don't recall specifically, but here's the question:

I have bought all of the spells available so far.

1. Fireball I start with
2. Upgrade to fireball
3. Blast - the fire that instantly fires
4. Frost Bolt - Nice, it slows down the enemy
5. Arcane knowledge - more Intell...
6. Water
7. Food

Ok - when do I start Spec'ing? I hear that fire is a good way to go for PVP, but Ice (at 40ish) is the way to AoE. I'd like to AoE. My concern is that I don't know what I'm doing and I don't want to paint myself into a corner.

I don't care if I waste Gold by buying a spell I won't like/use, but I'm not sure how the how Spec thing works.

Thanks for any advice you could offer,

You want to buy ever spell that you can train with, you will end up using all of them depending on the situation (pretty much). As for arcane/frost/fire pick whichever you would like. The Greatest Mage Post Ever (top of this forum) has some good info in it to get you started.

At level 10 you recieve your first talent point.

I chose fire to level with, because it usually ends w/ a quick kill. Frost on the other hand, is much more durable/survivable than the fire mage, far less single-target damage, but alot more AOE options.

Fire is basically the single-target fast-burn, and Frost as the slower aoe kills, but with more life-saving tricks like ice block and cold snap. I have heard some frost mages use the phrase "If I can chill it, I can kill it.", meaning that frostbolt will slow your opponent's movement speed and allow you to "kite" them around, staying well out of melee range for the most part.

If you like decimating a single-target in an instant, choose fire. If you want to kill 5-6 mobs at once, circling them, wearing down thier hp, choose Frost.

I have never met a mage that was full Arcane, so I wouldn't know how well they can level up with it.

Just my 2 pesos.

You start having talents points from level 10 up to 70 at the rate of 1 point per level.

You will want to buy all spell upgrades regardless of you spec. They may come in handy in different fights.

Frost is very good for PVP at later levels and is currently being regarded at the best PVP spec (although you can surely PVP with fire). Most information you find will be aimed at level 70 players.

Initially, you can choose to go fire or frost and won't be really affected by your choice. From level 40 on, you may wish to pick Frost if you are interested in AOE grinding or simply if you prefer the control/survival it provides.

The best thing I can suggest is to go with what you think you may prefer.

Speccing in frost/fire will enhance your frost/fire spells by adding damage or reducing cast times and cooldowns and that sort of stuff. They will also give you specific talents that other specs can't have. For example, fire will have access to Pyroblast (huge fireball that hurts like hell) and frost will have ice barrier (shields you and ensures no interupt while casting). Those are only examples and I hope it may help you a bit.

I would suggest you read the FAQ in the mage forum to help get a good understanding of the basics of being a mage. Good luck to you!

You get your first talent point at level 10 and an additional talent point at each subsequent level for a total of 61. Regarding which spec is best for leveling, you will get varying opinions depending on who you ask. I would highly recommend that you not spec into arcane early on, as you will find yourself wasting large amounts of time drinking to make up for the high mana cost of arcane missiles. I personally prefer fire for leveling, but frost is also an excellent choice. I also recommend that you continue to buy spells as they become available, as the influence of your talent choices will not become noticeable until the mid 20s to early 30s. Meaning, even if you choose fire you will still find a great deal of use from frost nova and cone of cold. This may not be what you want to hear, but I personally ignored most of the advice I was given when learning the mage and, by doing so, you will understand your class far better in the end. If you simply do what a more experienced player tells you, then you will fall into the trap of mindlessly doing what other players say instead of experimenting for yourself. That said, the other players in this forum and myself are more than willing to answer your questions. Just remember to test all advice for yourself since you might find a discrepancy between your results and those suggested.

Talent Points

Talent points are simple and easy to use. They help make you better a specific skill set of spells (such as your frost spells, or fire spells). Some of the time they are effective across the board (arcane has a lot of effective across the board talents).

Simply put, invest and focus in one tree while you're leveling. I prefered focusing on Frost for the increased survivability, and later on the AoE grinding was a blast.

Talents will help make your character stronger, however be careful in what talents you choose, it costs gold to reset your talent points and this can become costly.

A lot of people prefer speccing fire until 40, and then switching to frost. As I've already said I preferred to spec frost all the way to where I am now, but it's up to you.

Spells

If you've specced fire, eventually Pyroblast will become your solo opener. You'll probably move to Fireball Fireball Fireblast. In groups, Scorch + Ignite should be your main damage.

If you've specced frost, Frostbolt will be your damage dealer. You'll be spamming Frostbolt, slowing the mob (enemy), and stepping back as it gets close. This is called kiting. Eventually you'll freeze the mob in place, and Frostbolt+Fireblast it for huge crits (when you get shatter). In groups you simply spam Frostbolt, and sometimes use Frostnova and Fireblast.

Gear

Pre 40 focus on +int, +stam, +spirit. After 40 focus on +spell damage, +crit rating, and +damage.

Good Group Etiquette

Be sure to always offer food/water when you group, and be sure to 'buff' up your group with Arcane Intellect and when the situation calls for it Dampen Magic/Amplify Magic.

If you have any other questions, or if this was complicated feel free to ask. Hopefully you have fun, and welcome to World of Warcraft.

Thanks for the advice. I just hit 10 and got my first point.

I was just worried about buying spells - if that meant I was going to end up being forced to spec. that type of spell.

Thanks for all the advice. It's been very helpful.

Thanks

Frost is good for PvP against more people at once. Powerfull chills, the elemental etc are pretty good against the any class. Fire in PvP, can be equally devastating - If you don't get one shotted, since you won't have barrier and block to protect you. Sheeping someone, then pyro+fire blast at once is enough to destroy most classes (And if it isn't, blinking into them and unleashing dragons breath + Schorch + Blastwave certainly is)
