shatter in level 29 BGsFollow

I've specced my mage around shatter in the 29 bracket and I'm not finding it all that effective. I have 3/3 frostbite to make me freeze targets more often, but rarely get off my big frostbolts in the battlegrounds against frozen targets. I seem to be more effective with frost nova/arcane explosion to get crits, but that is almost a suicide act.

I'm not done gearing out my mage, but I'm really wondering if is viable at all in the 29 bracket. I'm not a twink, but I'll be leaving the mage at 29 so I have someone at the level to use to group with friends in the BGs.

Has anyone had success with shatter at 29? I find myself relying heavily on fire blast, cone of cold and arcane explosion to do most of my damage. Perhaps I need to respec to boost the shorter cast spells?

Thanks.

It isn't very often thaty you will end up getting off a full nuke unless they people are otherwise preoccupied or it is a rogue/warrior at a distance. You will pretty much rely on getting the drop (literally) on enemies like from the roof in wsg, frost novaing, using cone of cold, then aoeing the group of enemies with arcane explosion/etc. I got quite a few kills that way, you can also always blink, nova, cond of cold as well.

When I PvPed, I'd do the following:

  • Frost Nova
  • Blink
  • Frost Bolt (As soon as it's casted) cast Fire Blast immediately after. You'll often get two crits.

I often got killing blows because I followed that pattern.

Anyone tried a 10/10/0 hybrid at level 29:

5/5 improved arcane missiles
5/5 arcane concentration

5/5 impact
2/2 flame throwing
3/3 improved fireblast

Scorch and fireblast probing for clearcasting to unload an zero mana AM?

I'm still tinkering with my battlegrounds 29 build and can't quite come up with something that I'm happy with.

How often does 5/5 Arc Concentration procs at 10% ?

Nice build, but from what i can tell, thats more for kiting :). or is it just me ?

My current build is: http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/basics/talents/mage/talents.html?2050000000000000000000050023001200000000000000000000000000000000000

Frost nova> Sheep> pyro> scorch or fireball > fireblast> cone of cold> blink> arc miss> fireblast> arc expl. that's my rotation w/o a macro :)

That is similar to the other build I was contemplating:

Except I went for impact instead of improved fireball, and incinerate instead of arcane subtlety.

I would either use incinerate or ignite, although at lower levels you can't really stack on +crit gear so it isn't as helpful at lower levels. I agree with the reasoning of dropping fireball though, because if you have enough time to cast a fireball you normally have enough to cast pyroblast. Also, the impact procs will be important for your shorter casts (fireblast/scorch).
