Hating locks?Follow

#1 Oct 11 2007 at 9:12 AM Rating: Sub-Default
Hey, this is my first time posting on here so bear with me.

Anyways, how come so many people hate the locks. My mains a lock and I just rolled a mage, so i was lookin on here for tips on starting out, and every post with locks mentioned says that they take no skill to play, way overpowered, etc.

Has anyone seen a locks dps pre 40? It terrible, unless your fightin a boss. Yes we can live longer with drain life, life syphon, etc. but it does take a lot longer to kill things than mages.

Now I'm not complaining about the dps, thats what the other spells are for, to keep me alive while my low dps kills whatever I'm attacking.

Also mages can AOE a million times better than locks. Soloing vc for me takes foever, but with the same lvl mage it would take half the time.

So all in all we all have our pros and cons. But I just don't see the reason for all the lock hating.

If you are referring to the last 10 or so posts, there is only one person who is ranting about warlocks. I personally think he has warlock envy.

I certainly don't hate warlocks. When I PvE, they are great to take on raids. They do amazing DPS in raids and have very nice CC and group buffs. Some people (again, just one person recently) feel that locks are going to take the place of mages in raids. I disagree with that statement.

In PvP, locks are usually an anti-mage character (along with rogues). They are very hard to kill (although more skilled players seem to do well against them, so maybe you can call them an anti-Spaz character.) I am newer to the PvP scene (and specced fire), so I try to avoid warlocks unless I have an unfair advantage. If I do have an unfair advantage, I will fire away! The warlock advantage in PvP may be a source of angst for some.

Again, if you look at the name on many of the lock hating posts, you will see very little variation.

Mages hate locks for one thing mainly.
Other than: WoTF (5 minute cd and undead only), PvP Trinket (kinda end game and could be used better) and Ice Block (4/5 minute cd) the Mage has no serious defense against the Lock's Fear spell, while Lock can spam it all the time. You tap 3 keys and the Mage gets dots that eat 5-10% of his HP bar every second while he's just running around like an idiot.
The other frustrating thing is that except the Fear, as if it wasn't enough to f..k us, you have serious burst damage with your shadow school, and pets that can whoop us as well, such as the Succubus' Seduce.
Lock has but one big drawback I believe - no serious means of breaking from melee. Mages get Blink, Frost Nova, chill spells, Ice Block etcetera etcetera, while Locks get nuthin of that sort.
But the (Our) problem is, you don't need that stuff at all when fighting us... meh.

Exactly what XanNerull said.

It is that locks in PvP pwn mages so badly it isn't even funny. This at some point in time causes frustration for us mages and hence the "Locks = OP" etc...

But see, I rem reading WoW designers didn't want to focus on 1v1 balance. They wanted to focus on TEAM balance.

This means that yes, there are scenarios where 1 class just so easily completely owns another one.

However, if you have a diverse team (albeit 2 man, 3 man, or 5 man), then this imbalance goes away.

I think it is the 1v1 imbalance that makes the team dynamic so interesting.

With good locks, I've often had trouble in 2v2, with both me and my healer alive.
Not per se with the whole not dying part, it's just that I can't kill him cause he can heal as good as a healer with drain life after my cs is down. It's not such a wonderful spell, but it can't be LoS'd, and I can't interrupt it either.
Getting owned without having a chance in hell to kill one, better yet, without a chance to take out more then 20% of his hp, that pisses me off.

The fact that they get great pvp boni in raid gear is equally annoying, I have to make a pvp set to get half-decent hp, while I sometimes see warlocks in pvp with 15k hp in raid gear. Sure, no resilience, but with 1k+ spelldamage, I wouldn't be that worried. They seem to get the best of everything basically.

They do die by rogues or warriors though, I suppose.

Damo, chill. take another chill pill if the heat is still there.

Just last nite, I got invited to a Karazhan raid cos one of the locks had to leave. I like warlocks in raids as well, I view them as serving a vital function in encounters which is a good effort on Blizzard's end to include them in the pve scene.

The raid I joined were stuck on Curator. Somehow the sparks are living way too long. I reminded the raid that using DoTs on the sparks is waste of time, short casts and instants should do it. I went in and we cleared Curator no problem. I would be hard pressed to plow my way past Prince's 2nd phase without the use of any DD. Destructo Warlocks have very effective DD but lack the tools of a SL/SL lock or full afflic locks. DoTs while doing spectacular DPS is not really quite capable of getting through Prince phase 2 without danger to the tank or healer mana. I have to remind you again that Prince is not a melee friendly fight.

High King Maulgar. You would be crazy to not at least bring ONE mage to tank Krosh. Even then my guild regularly brings 3 to 4 mages. Locks and spriest come to the around the same number as well. Fact remains that the encounter is designed to force you to bring both classes.

Gruul, you need all the dps you can get. Again if you depended on DoTs alone, Gruul might grow too many times.... DD is also needed here.

SSC, again need mages. Naga need to be sheeped and kept sheeped.
TK, more humanoids....

as long as mages remain useful and players who play them keep plugging away even though the numbers tell you that you "suck", Raids would keep their mages around for the things they bring to a raid.

Ummm Gruul is an affliction warlock fight. I would much rather have an affliction warlock than any mage in that boss encounter.

And as of right now warlocks are the best class to take for dps in boss encounters. They are the class to be as of right now.

Your CC sucks in pve. You asked for just one and I gave just one.

I love locks : D I have a gnome lock that is fun as heck to play. I like mages more because of the skill level involved in playing a mage. To be an amazing mage, you have to practice and in a MMORPG that is rare.
