Frost Mage vs. Shaman/WarlockFollow

#1 Oct 08 2007 at 1:03 PM Rating: Decent
Level 46 Human Frost Mage with OK gear (40% blue with lots of +stamina and OK +46 spell damage and pvp trinket / a few low level enchants).

In 40-49 Battleground.

Any tips on beating these guys 1v1? Or is just not possible?

If you can state tips and account for:
40 and crappy at pvp -to- 49 twinked and amazing at pvp

... I'd appreciate that.

Frost Mage verses a Shaman is a fairly balanced match. I'd personally follow this order:

  • (If I Get The Jump): Frost Bolt. (If I don't, sheep)
  • Frost Bolt.
  • Frost Nova
  • Blink / Get Distance (Stay out of range of shocks)
  • Frost Bolt/Fire Blast (This will generally finish them off, because of shatter)
  • If it doesn't, they'll try to heal. Counter Spell
  • Spam Frost Bolt, if you can. Once he finally Earth Shocks you, Fire Blast, Arcane Blast, etc...

As for a warlock, I generally tend to avoid.

1) level up to 48/49 to get the most out of the gear and spells

2) I tend to avoid warlocks because they tend to be more of a pain than they are worth unless I am with a group of people.

3) Shaman it truly depends on their spec. If they are resto you better hope that you can CS their heal and burn them down fast or else you will end up out of mana and die through trying to kill them through their heals (similarly with druids)
-- If they are enhancement just kite them as best as you can, if elemental counterspell them and burn them down.

Shaman - watch out for the cheesy totem that absorbs a spell, save your counterspell and use it when they heal. Depending on their spec you might get an easy fight.

Warlock... avoid at all costs. Assuming equal skill an gear, YOU WILL ALWAYS LOSE TO A LOCK.

**one way to kill a lock if you have lots of friends:

-A warlock takes no skill to play, and as such many locks are idiots.
-When the lock fears you, use the trinket and run towards your friends.
-Many locks are so incompetent they can be kited like a mob.
-Assuming you have 3 or more friends, they should be able to down the warlock.
-Celebrate.

Obviosly, the above strategy has its weaknesses and you will often die of DoT after completing it, but its the only way for a mage to kill a lock.

...-sigh- Forget the warlock QQer above me. 49 hmmmm [link=http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ofxV00fzZVbhzZV0h[/link] or a deep frost.

Love the shammy strat but warlocks can be beaten. It's hard but possible. IB wipes fear and dots. PvP trink wipes fear and cham. WotF wipes fear and charm. CS works on fear and dots (use on shadow not fire) They are not immune to sheep. The pets they are with are weak, if you can get a shot on the pet without being feared over and over the pet will die. Warlocks are not made of metal therefore they cannot survive you slamming on them with instanukes.

Man, so many people are afraid of locks just because of fear (no pun intended) but if you break the class down they have weaknesses just like we do. One good reason why a good rogue will pwn a lock, they take fear out of the equation for just a few seconds. You have tools, don't be afraid to use them. And find a good lock who is willing to practice with you and I promise that after a little practice he won't walk half as tall as he did before.

(sorry for the wall of text, im in a hurry)

(P.P.S. The PoM isn't for pyroblast...it's for sheep.)

Thanks for all the tips.

I guess for shamans it was always crappy b/c of their INSANE melee damage. I had about 2700 hp + 550 ice armor + mana shield and I had my health taken down to about 20hp in ONE shot it by a 49 twink shaman. That is down right nuts. It is THESE shamans I'm really confused about b/c basically you can't do anything. It also seems as if they can repeat this non stop, is this the case? (unlike a POM/pyro insane damage combo you can only do once every 3 minutes)

As for the lock, well that's what I thought. You can't do anything. You can have every cool down and trinket ready to go, do every pvp trick in the book, but even then, if you somehow MANAGE to kill them (they'd have to be purty stupid), you still die to DOT's.

This is ok though as long as their is some other class that completely owns locks. That's balance and I have no problem with that. The question is which class is it? Hunter? Rogue?

It's just sad to see my girlfriend play battlegrounds for the first time ever as her 46 lock, and end up on the top of the chart for damage / kills / honorable kills / and EVEN HEALING!!!!! She just tapped 1 2 3 4 fear .. tab repeat.. this is against twinkied hordes! Something is horribly wrong there ...

I'm sure things will change once I get to the next BG level and finally have water elemental and more damage on my spells (via talent points and gear). Getting that WE seems to be the key IMO. Does this seem the case?

Thanks all once again ...

Yay someones seen the light and joined my bandwagon! my lock-bashing has not been in vain!

Edit: dont hope for too much from WE, its not available all the time and much less useful than warlock pets

That will be windfury i guess. It's a weapon enchant that a shammy puts on his weapon that can proc and crit twice if u are unlucky, and that will take out a nice chunck of health indeed ( example: my 32 shammy started to hit on a 36 mob, killing it in 2 blows basicly, beacause windfury had a double crit.

With the Water elemental it will get easier. For example, pull out WE, and ice block when you are under attack. Let the WE bash on the opponent for a while. Also very nice is while you are casting frostbolt use the WE's frost nova, that way the target will freeze up while your frostbolt is in the air. This gives the opponent almost no time at all to escape the frozen state, setting up a nice frostbolt/ice lance shatter combo. (needs timing though) Or probably fireblast at your level.
