On a whim, I just rolled a human mage. At level 12 I have chosen my first three talent points in improved frostbolt. (Based, of couse, on my daughter's recommendation.) Is frost a good way to level? The FAQ had no information about talent spec'ing. What _is_ the best way to go for leveling? Where _can_ I find some sample specs?

Thanks!

Well, are you going to level solo or with someone else? If so, who?

This information helps.

Now, you can really choose anything, so this is just my opinion but I'd say for level 39 and below, fire is the way to go for solo leveling (or even with someone else).

Frost is pretty good, at the lowest levels you're simply looking at what spell you most recently got, since it will most likely put out the highest DPS.

For many, Frost provides the best grinding all the way up into the 60s, because it offers relatively good mana efficiency, decent-to-excellent dps with crits, highly effective defensive techniques such as Ice Barrier, and in many reguards the best AE options.

There are going to be points where you're stuck doing slow grinds and quests, and quite honestly for your instances on your trip up it's going to be hard to match the effectiveness and utility of Arcane/Fire Mages, but Ice definatly can keep up with the damage, and depending on what type of group you're rolling with a Blizzard here or there can be insanely high DPS and DPM and utility.

For the AE grind and the "difficult" quests, as long as your Playstyle matches it I think it's safe to say that Ice is your best bet.

Common All-Around Ice Build - Ice is really the only tree that works almost entirely in it's own tree... with this also comes the fact that it is much more single-element dependant, and for single target DPS extremely reliant on crits.

As for myself, I'm leveling with Arcane right now, and I love the Rambo-ish style of the build. I definatly respect a good Ice build though, and with Ice you feel the rush of having total control over your targets while still having those extra defensive techs to fall back on.

You should read the "Greatest Mage Post Ever" at the top of this forum. It gives you all the details for all the specs. Just set aside a lot of time, since it's a long post.

I chose fire since I just want to do max damage. Of course, I do die quicker... :)

Be sure to read this.

Now, I leveled from 10-60 Frost. At 60 I went Fire for a bit, but Frost has so much more questing power. I easily solo elites, I easily solo multiple mobs, and I easily single target grind. I can AoE grind on a whim, and can better Crowd Control. Fire has it's advantages, but I died a lot. Perhaps I didn't know how to play fire as well, but shatter, and about 15% crit chance and the stacking +crit chance = lotsa crits :).

Personally, I'd choose Frost; however, I'd recommend trying both and seeing how it works out.

Thanks. I will read the post you recommend. I plan pretty much soloing except for instances and group quests. I suppose there will come a time when I need help in certain non-group situations. I will stick with frost for now and experiment with fire once I get a few mor levels under my belt.

Thanks again. The posts were very helpful.

There _is_ an easy build for leveling. For everything, actually. It's called warlock. If you morally object to playing such an overpowered class (as I do) then fire will be the best build to level. Youll get hit a bit more than an ice mage, but that doesnt matter because the mob will always be dead long before it does any serious damage, and you can conjure your own food to eat (and eat it as you drink, so in the long run it wastes no time).

There's an easy build to sub-default too. It's called trolling. Please take your warlock superiority complex to the Oboards.
