Narrowing Down Talents...Follow

#1 Oct 07 2007 at 9:16 AM Rating: Excellent
So I'm going with what I assume is a pretty standard frost pvp build...

But I'm wondering what to do with a couple spare talents points...

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=of0E00bZZVVGcobxs0qt

Namely, what's better for pvp between Frost Channeling, Precision and Permafrost.

I don't intend to do much (if any) pve with this guy, so Frost Channeling's threat reduction is pretty useless. That being said, the mana reduction might be worth something because arena fights often comes down to who is more mana efficient.

Permafrost seems like a no brainer. Better and longer snares? That being said, the actual increase are pretty small (10% and 3 sec... diminishing return makes short work of that 3 sec - and heck, I'll only be able to get 2/3 anyway), so it might not be as good as it appears.

Elemental Precision seems a bit iffy as well. Sure, +hit means less resist/miss, but seeing as this is only for pvp, I really only need +5%, right? Can't imagine that'll be very hard to get on off pieces... the mana reduction on spell is also pretty small so as to not matter.

So... any advice?

Hmm...actually Ice Floes is much better than all those talents for PVP, you'll have CoCs and Ice Barriers more often, wich is great. The Ice Block and Cold Snap cooldowns reductions are nice too, but it will really shine for CoC and Ice Barrier.

About those 3 you said, Permafrost might be better to improve your control on kiting, but I don´t think it's necessary or even worth the points you are not putting on Ice Floes.

Hope I could help you a bit.

Ice floes is a good one too. Also winters chill puts an extra magic debuff on the target, handy against dispell happy teams, especially warlocks with the 8 second devour magic cooldown.

20% reduction isn't much on Iceblock or Coldsnap... but I guess it does make a difference in making CoC much more of a spammable spell. Faster Ice Barrier doesn't hurt either... hmm...

Permafrost + Ice Floes = CoC Chill never lost.

U don't need ice floes to keep CoC chill up if you have permafrost :) - It makes it a lot easier thou.

I'd go for either Ice Floes or Permafrost... Permafrost giving me a (just a little bit) better control of my enemy whilest Ice Floes reduces cooldown on especially the shield - That's nice.

You, of all people, should know that a few extra seconds in PvP can mean the difference between victory and someone having to call the PSI* on your ***.

*If you do not get the reference, your Flintlocke knowledge is lacking, grasshoppa.

Doesn't really help at all.

A few more second on a snare, and a few more % on a slowing effect seems just as good as a few more second on CoC's cooldown ;p.

I don't have imp frostbolt in my arena spec, because I hardly use frostbolt, except in 5v5, but we have enough dps in our group for me to pick better talents.

I maxed out permafrost, because it's really handy when applying rank one frostbolt snares to people, since they'll stay longer that way.
I also have 4 points into winter's chill, only four, because I feel it gives me enough chance to apply the debuff that way.
I prefer ice floes over more points into arctic winds, because I tend to use coc and ice barrier a lot, it also helps on those drawn out arena fights I sometimes get in 2v2, this is a rare occasion though. It's mainly to support barrier and coc.
I'd also like to point out that frost channeling is a good alternative to piercing ice in my opinion, an oom mage is worthless, and there's no pots in arena.

In the arcane tree I usually take imp AM over anything in the third tier, since it's a really nice finisher, and great to use on clearcasts or focus procs. Mainly focus procs, does a lot of dps.

Keep in mind, this is all personal preference, but it works for me. Works well even (meaning, don't look at arena rating, I'm the only one in my arena teams that actually has decent res gear).

The specs I generally use (I respec a lot, so I usually change one or two things if I feel like it) are:

Anyway, hope that helped, cheers.

I've died many a times because I was a few seconds away from a cooldown that would have saved the day. My solution: Drop piercing ice for Permafrost and get Ice Floes too. Best of both worlds. Smiley: grin
