Pulling (rant from a hunter)Follow

I was doing mana tombs today, and I had probably the worst puller I've ever seen past level 3 playing a warrior. There were 2 hunters in the group, and we'd drop our traps then he'd move to one of them to pull. So instead of it being the mob one of us pulled off to trap, it would be whichever mob was first in the lineup. (He also didnt want to assign targets, he let the healer do that). Then, there were times where pulls took so long I'd wait for the healer to drink up, drop my trap, stand there...watch trap dissappear, redrop trap, say "can we move on?" and then the warrior would line up, stand there, my trap would dissappear again, and then I'd get the CD to finish on my 3rd drop before the warrior would actually pull.
Granted, we could have pulled, but if that happened I knew the warrior wouldnt gain aggro. I don't know what was going on but that was probably the SLOWEST instance run I've ever attempted (didnt make it cuz healer DC/D). And I've tried soloing instances on a same-level prot pally (try SM lib solo at high 30's when you're up against 2 of the mobs that just shield and renew, you'll get respawns before you kill them).

So, yeah end rant that warrior sucked.

???

not sure why he would take THAT long. sometimes i end up waiting another ten seconds or so because the pulled mob is too close to a pat or vice versa, or would pull other mobs etc. but i always wait and err on the side of safety. maybe he was just chicken?

I have no idea. The one time the hunters pulled he didn't tank and we had aggro going everywhere. So I guess he did go afk every 2 minutes.

I'm a relatively new 70 prot spec warrior, and up until I hit 70 I had never run across anyone marking the mobs. Since my warrior is the only class I've played to date, I'm still a bit unfamiliar with who can CC what, so I often pass on the marking responsibility until I gain a better understanding of everyone's abilities. I'm also still learning the different instances, so I often defer to someone with experience in those instances as well.

My bigger challenge is determining when the group is ready for my pull. I'll often err on the side of caution (although not as long as you describe), only to have someone get irritable at the slow rate. When I pick up the rate only slightly, I'm having someone shouting "WAIT" after I've already started my pull. It often seems like the group expects you to read their minds, and it often takes me several pulls before I can figure out the tempo of the group.

Typically I will take a look at everyone's health and mana, and if not everyone is up to speed I wait. I also take a quick glance around to see if anyone is still sitting which is an unreliable way of seeing if someone has gone AFK for a moment...but its something. If all else fails, I'll send out a "ready" and if I don't get a response after a couple of seconds, I'd go ahead and pull.

I'd be interested on hearing how other tanks determine the tempo and when the appropriate time is to pull. So far none of the groups I've been on have voice chat, so I've had to rely on the indications listed above and my own instinct, as well as the occasional irritable responses from group members to estimate when I should move ahead with my pull.

when i tank, i say that i dictate the pace from the beginning. if mana and health are good, and the timing on the pull is good, i will pull, and the group has to be ready. if someone has to take a break, it has to be as obvious as possible, and if you're afk every 2 mins for whatever reason, i don't care what it is. if you knew you were going to be afk every 2 mins you shouldn't have started the instance anyway, and i'm gonna look for a rep for that person asap.

what i really hate is when a noob starts criticizing the way i tank. i was asked by a holy pally "could you please come in and tank for me and my guildies through reg SL, i need a good tank and you are one", so me being strapped for time marked all the pulls for sap and sheep and made clear which ones i was going to tank multi-mobs. everyone was on voice but me (gf was studying), but i could hear the noob mage talking smack about "oh so this guy's in charge isn't he" and generally complaining how i took charge of the instance, even explaining when and where to sap, sheep, pace dps, etc. all the basic instance crap that dps should know like the back of their hand. i hate it when people get on your case for doing THEM a favor.
