Tips for a new warrior?Follow

I'm a long time reader but first time poster. I just started my warrior up and I'm having a hard time decided what to spec out into. My first instinct was to go arms because it seems to have the best dps (correct me if I'm wrong, please). I've been reading a lot of posts about it and I've started to lean towards going into prot. I realize prot has higher survivability whereas arms/fury have higher dps, but that doesn't really decide it for me. My warrior is currently only level 15, so it's not a huge issue yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for an inexperienced warrior. Thanks guys

2h fury, like in every other post like this ;)

arms dps talents really come later down the tree, while fury will give you a fairly even dps rise throughout. Once you get imp slam and your WW (axe or whatever relse you choose) slams will just murder people [and mobs] left and right.

prot is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow to level, don't do it.

Well this is absoulutely a little bit more up to how it is in you surroundings

by that I mean guild and the other people you hang with...do they need a tank , you should definetly spec prot and the same if they need a DPS maker..

For your own concern, DPS is easier to get armor for, IMO...Tanking gear is very hard to get hold of, I feel =(

If you have had a rogue or other melee dependent classes and liked it you should really try out the Dual Wield (Fury) opportunities you get with Warrior... Arms for me is more end-game or late 50's specialization since it's quite hard to get hold of a good 2h weapon through quests I feel....

Although you will not get Dual Wield until level 20 =(

Although if your guild/or whatever is doing a lot of instances the 2H may not be such a bad choice because of the good strenght+stamina gear that pops out quite often IMO...Dual Wielding is pretty independent on Agility (also tanking thanks to +2armor per 1 agility and dodge+)

This pointers may not really help you at all...So here´s a sum up:

Tanking = If there is a lack of tanks in your surroundings and if you can stand the longer killing when soloing

Dual(Fury) = Easy to get hold of two decent weapons if you are doing instances often...Exellent DPS with Fury spec also

2H (Arms/Fury) = Not as easy to get hold of weapon but easier to get stats and a storng burst damage

You should never spec prot until you hit about 68, until then you can easily tank in whatever spec you have with decent +stam [edit: and defense/mitigation] gear [edit: once you get to higher levels].

There is very little itemization for prot oriented warriors at lower levels because there doesn't need to be more. You level too fast and have no need for it, thus blizzard only starts adding serious protection pieces at about 52 (for 60 content) and throughout TBC.

There are a few great 2h'ers available for ever level range, some are quest rewards, other are drops from instances ... there are also BOE ones (but they are expensive)

DW is absolutely a no-go for early leveling, your miss rate is much too high and you won't nearly be as effective with it as you would be going 2h fury.

[i'm guessing you meant DEpendent on agility] which is wrong, it's dependent on your AP to do more damage, dependent on your crit to keep flurry up once you get to that point [and although agi = crit, it's not a good conversion because for warriors if you're getting agi, you're missing str until some later [and a few earlier 'odd' pieces], and most importantly, it depends on hit.

Hmm...Yeah I think you´re right on the prot spec in early days...
The block rate/percent isn´t high enough until lvl 50+

Yeah I forgot about the Slam 2-Hander... that´s so awesome it´s almost cruel to the other classes ;)

Although...The 2H is pretty hard to level with IMO =( I think Dual Wield from level 20-30 or maybe 31-32 is better...But if you have a 2H weapon on the bank you should get it a swing directly =D

I agree with Russki. 2 hander at lower levels is the (to me) best way to level warrior. Even when you hit 20 and can dual wield I wouldn't.

Once you can dual wield there is an added miss chance to hit, 25% I believe but don't quote me on that.

Reason why Russki, and many other people, say to use a 2 hander is because of the miss chance on dual wield and because the lack of +hit equipment at early levels.
Once you get to higher levels more +hit equipment will become more available.

Can you dual wield at early levels and still kill stuff? Well the answer would be yea ofcourse you can. Is it going to be efficient? Most likely not.

When you get to the point of fighting a mob and thinking "I can beat him with dual wield no problem". Also you know that all you need is one more hit to kill the mob and the mob needs three hits to kill you. Once you completely miss the last three hits and the mob gets the last hit on you, you'll know why you don't want to dual wield at early levels. Based on a true story (mine). T_T

Ofcourse this doesn't happen all the time, actually you'll have to be very unlucky for this to happen to you. This doesn't change the fact that it doesn't happen. This shows the disadvantage to using dual wield at early levels. The point is this will be the time where you would think to yourself, "Damn I should have used a 2 hander."

Okay, so essentially, go into 2h fury for leveling then. Given the choice between strength, agility or stamina boosts, which would be the best? or is there an "ideal" mix of the three?

Strength > Stamina > Agility for leveling. Though don't completely gimp yourself on stamina since you need to be able to take the hits too.

Hmm...what I tend to tell people is put 5 points into Cruelty and then start putting points into Arms till you get Mortal Strike. I've been lvling an Arms warrior for a long long time. Never spec'ed fury so don't really know how that tree works. Besides, why spend time getting two really good weapons when you need only one instead :P

Mortal Strike with a 2-handed weapon really hurts. Yes, you will swing a lot slower than dual wielding but you hit harder and your crits will hurt more. Go for high top end damage 2-handers and you'll see big numbers.

Anyways, spec what you think you're gonna have fun with and enjoy the pain from farming hour after hour for equipment ;)

For me I decided to spec prot from level 1. The main reason being that frankly I don't care if arms or fury would be faster, I chose warrior because i wanted to tank, and I want to be intimately familiar with being a prot war BEFORE I hit 70. That way I don't have to re-learn how to play my class once I hit 70. Furthermore, I have a static levelling group with 2 RL friends and we all play from the same house. So we're pretty much always doing quests (normal and group) and instances together. So it makes sense for me to tank pretty much all the time. And when I do feel like soloing some quests or grinding, I can still just equip a 2H weapon and still be reasonably effective.

Currently I've got 5 deflection, 3 thunder clap, 5 cruelty, and everything else has gone (and will continue to go) into the prot tree until I get 70.

So I guess it depends on your playstyle and your situation. A lot of people are DPSers at heart and only tank when they're expected to. For me, I'm a tank at heart and only DPS when I'm expected to.

At 64'ish I noticed that the melee were drawing hate off me easier. I then changed to a mix of Protection/Arms. So far it's been working fine. Even the Anger Management helps retain a bit of rage while the casters are drinking for mana.

Where I'm going with that is, I noticed a HUGE difference in leveling after I changed from almost straight Fury, to the arms/prot spec. No nifty kill the mob faster moves, just shield moves, one hand specialty, and better defense = longer fights.

I respect anyone who has the patience to level straight Protect, much like Priest that level Holy instead of Shadow.

Don't let anyone tell you want to level as. However, changing specs is not as hard as you could be thinking. There are plenty of people go PvP spec'd then change to Protect spec for Raids.

...Thinking about it. Sword & Board as protect leveling would still be slower, but with the extra 4k defense and the Shield slams, Pummel, and other stunning methods.. you'd prolly rock caster mobs. Hmm, I'll never try it (until Heroic run time), but to each his own.

If you mean good luck with being intimately familiar with everything warrior before I hit 70, then touche. But at the very least, I'll have the correct mindset from the getgo :)

hmmmmm I leveled dps spec until late 60 and still tanked better than some people that were prot from way earlier.

being prot won't make you a good tank, if anything, tanking while you are dps specced will, because it's a much bigger challenge.
