pet tankingFollow

Hey, I just did the first instance fun with this hunter, SM Lib, and I was wondering if I did something wrong or did the war just suck. Granted I was quite a few levels above him, 7 to be exact, he couldn't hold hate at all. I would mark the guy he should tank and I marked the other guy that my pet would OT. After about 1 min after marking I would always have to tell him to go attack, then after about 10-20 seconds of fighting I'd notice his mob go after myself or the priest. I would then send my pet to tank that one as well. At some points my pet was tanking 4 guys while the warrior wouldn't get hate at all.

I have 2 questions,
1. Did this warrior just suck and I should just learn not to play with him anymore? Or was I over tanking with my pet?
2. How far can I go with my pet tanking if I run into this problem later? I don't have a guild that does instances at all and I'm ok with my pet tanking but not sure if he can handle it for much longer. (I mean prior to OL, I know that he will get destroyed there)

btw, we didn't wipe, no one died, not even my pet

I have to ask some questions before I can answer yours...

1. What level were you?
2. What level was he?
3. Did you let the warrior build up threat?

If you're 7 levels above the guy, you're going to pull hate way easier. So you need to hold back a LOT on your damage. And if the warrior was like level 29 or 30 going into SM Lib, he may have had problems hitting the target, and thus building up threat. On my warrior, I'm levelling prot and even if I have people my level going through but they spam AoE spells the second the targets reach me I'm not going to hold aggro. It may not be that he sucked, but he was simply too low to get the necessary threat. Also, multi-shot should not be used indiscriminately as it will put mobs onto you FAST.
Now, I've also seen sucky warriors, and you need to pay attention to a few things:
1. Does he have a shield out.
2. What stance is he in? If he isn't stance dancing, ask him.
3. Is he using aggro gaining abilities, such as sunder armor and thunder clap (especially sundering multiple targets if need be) or is he just spamming heroic strike?
Pay attention to those 3 things, and you should be able to figure out if it's the warriors fault or not.

As far as pet off-tanking, I've done it in everything from VC to UB, and I've even main-tanked ZF (I was about 6 levels higher and the warrior was like "***** it, I'll OT"). It's not that the warrior did anything wrong, per se, but I simply outlevelled him by enough for my pet to pull aggro with growl off. In end-game is when you see pets fall off the tanking role, except for the few fights where you need someone with high resistances to OT someone who will send a magic attack at the second person on the threat list. Pets excell here because you can give them up to 140 resistances to different schools.

I'm lvl 37
He was lvl 30
I let him build up threat till he he lost it to me or the priest (mainly the priest)

I mainly used auto shot till my pet was tanking.. then I knew I could use my other shots. I only used multi shot once. I didn't see him use the sunder thing at all.. he was sporting a sword and shield though.

forgot that since he was lower he may not be able to hit the mobs either. good point

Yeah he may have still been sundering but it might have been dodged/parried/missed etc. But yes, next time ask what stance he's in, and if he stays in battle or zerker just kick him or tell the group "he goes or I go." On a hunter they may kick you but hey you'll get a decent tank next time.

a lvl 30 fighting lvl 34 mobs has a base chance of 10% or so to miss, and a way higher chance to be dodged, blocked or parried as well as that every blow that does hit will be a glancing blow (and thus does very little damage)

Basicallyt, he was to low for the instance, and wether he was good or not, he would never have been able to hold aggro there.

1st of all lvl 30 is way too low for SM. He might be the greatest agro taking fiend since sliced bread but the lvl of the mobs in question simply wont allow this, since SM isn't tuned for lvl 30 characters. ;p
