I was looking for some help with my avoidance math I have been reading the FAq and this is what I come up with.

miss = 12.85% + dodge 12.11% + parry 15.25% + block 12.66% = 52.87% + 30% for holy shield = 82.87%

here is the link to my armory

thx for the help.

When doing the math, don't add the numbers after the decimal as each stat is individually rounded up to put on the table. Also, you need to subtract .6% from each one to calculate against mobs that are 3 levels higher than you.

So when calculating against mobs your level:
Base miss: 5
Your miss: 4.36 -> 4
Your miss crit: 4.36+0.18 -> 4
Dodge: 12.11 -> 12
Parry: 15.25 -> 15
Block: 12.66 -> 12
Holy Shield: 30.00 -> 30

5+4+4+12+15+12+30 = 82% (Same as what you have) WITH a 1% chance to be crit

When calculating against mobs 3 levels higher than you:
Base miss: 5
Your miss: 4.36 - .6 = 3.76 -> 3
Your miss crit: 4.36+0.18-0.6 = 3.94 -> 3
Dodge: 12.11 - .6 = 11.51 -> 11
Parry: 15.25 - .6 = 14.65 -> 14
Block: 12.66 - .6 = 12.26 -> 12
Holy Shield: 30.00 -> 30

5+3+3+11+15+12+30 = 79% WITH a 2% chance to be crit

This is why 490 defense is sought after, because it puts your crit avoidance and your miss avoidance at 5.6%, making you immune to crits from bosses and getting the full 5% miss chance.

thx Jack that was a big help. The way that you explain it here makes it easy to understand.

Uhm, what?

There's no rounding. When people use a 100-sided die to simulate a hit table it's for simplicity and ease of demonstration, not an actual reflection of the game mechanics. If you have 5.5% dodge you will dodge 5.5% of the time against an equal-level mob, not 5% of the time.

If you're trying to calculate avoidance math in order to determine Crushing Blow immunity, it's usually simpler to add up all of your stats and try to surpass 102.4%. It's fundamentally the same as subtracting .6% from each avoidance type, but usually makes it easier to do quick math on.

I read somewhere that the numbers are rounded, so that even a 5.9 would register as 5 percent on the attack table. I'm pretty sure it was wowwiki, so I'm going to see if I can find it.

If I turn out to be wrong and can't find it I will admit it.

OK I found this on WoWWiki here:

Quote:
It is important to note that for the sake of all indirect effects of Defense Skill (dodge, block, parry, etc), the game only considers Skill as an integer. That is, there is absolutely no difference between 10 Rating (+4.23 Skill) and 11 Rating (+4.65 Skill), because they both yield only 4 integer points of Skill. However, there is a difference between 11 Rating (+4.65 Skill) and 12 Rating (+5.07 Skill); specifically, the difference is exactly 0.04% dodge, block, parry, etc.

I think that is what got me confused, I was translating rating -> skill to skill -> percentages.

So I take back the rounding thing above.

I know no one asked this, but I would toss this out there. I figure anyone interested in the above information, would enjoy this Crit information:

125 Defense is needed to negate the base 5% crit rate, mobs your same level use this. For each level above you, you need 5 more points of defense to negate. For us, our math looks like this:

350 (base for a 70) + 15 (5x3 since raid mobs are 73) + 125 = 490 (the magic number)

Druids get Survival of the Fittest, it lowers there chance to get a crit by 3%. That means they need the same 15 + 50. They only need to negate 2%. This is why they only need 415 defense skill.

Also here is some nice information about Ratings, and how they effect Dodge, miss, parry, and block:

Rating	Effect		Required 60/70
Defense 1 defense Sk 	1.5 	 2.37
Dodge 	1% dodge 	12 	18.923
Parry 	1% parry 	15 	22.4
Block 	1% block  	5 	7.88
