So I have a warrior in my guild who is completely NOT confident in his abilities.

He is currently specced to off tank for Kara and instanced, but he is intereded in going full prot.

Here is his armory profile: Soto
I don't want him to see this post, but I can relate any info here to him. What would be great is any outside guides, tips, etc, that I can give him links to!

Anybody have a general guide on being a warrior? A guide to tanking? He is not working until the end of october, so he has tons of time to read!

Thanks guys, I'll be keeping up with this post!

I found this website, don't know how long ago or where for that matter.
I take no credit for the info posted on this website.

The link I'm sending you to is a guideline for new warriors. Reason I'm posting this is because in this section it has a "Using your abilities" area which might be of use.

If you look on the left side it has another section called "Tanking Guide"
This will show you some threat mechanics, skill info, mods (don't know if its updated), macros, keybind/keyboard setups, sample talent builds for different situations, and other things that you might find useful.

Hope this helps your friend.

Pick whichever one you want to go to, I suggest both but it depends on the player.

First off tell him he doesn't need that many points into Prot to offtank.
When my toon was fury (17/44/0) i still successfully offtanked one of the elites during the Moroes fight. When it comes to off tanking it isn't the spec that makes the difference it's the gear.

I can't say much about good MTing as i think i'm not that great as an MT,
but i can give advice on off tanking.

As soon as u got 5 sunders on the mob do a sunder every 3-4 seconds, hit Shield block whenever it's up and do the same for revenge.

If he does go MT, tell him not to pick up Imp. Revenge.

some people might not agree with my reasoning, but i find the best way of tanking is to be taking a beating to make ur rage generate faster which means more devestates/sunders/revenges/HS. Imp. revenge will stun ur mob giving you less rage. Only time it's useful is if ur tanking 3-4 mobs at once so u can take one of the the picture for a few seconds to give the healer a break.
Spec
It may not be the best spec in the world, i'll admit cause it's been a while since i seriously thought about a proper tanking spec. but that one will do a good job. the anger management will help with rage generation

You should have Cruelty for any spec in the game, tanking or otherwise.

I think he has made bad choices in arms in the 1st two tiers. Improved rend only makes a weak dot slightly stronger and isn't worth the bother. Improving heroic strike isn't worth 3 talent points....better to get 5 points of deflection in the 1st tier. In tier 2, iron will is of limited use in pve, it's more of a pvp ability. Improved charge is better to generate rage at the start of an encounter before switching to defensive stance, and improved thunder clap is fantastic for mitigation and getting aggro early. At the bottom of the arms tree, I'd invest an extra point to get Mortal Strike, one of the best warrior abilities, at the cost of a point of improved taunt or a point of 2 handed specialisation if he is mainly using sword and board.

Hope this is of some use.

now, is he bad? or he just suffering from the not-knowing syndrome?

Gems are a big part of his gear, tell him to gear up correctly. Tankspot.com is probably the best site for prot warriors with their forums and articles. Tell him to read those, or if anything, you can read them yourself and reiterate things in terms he would easier understand.

Define bad?

Poor tank? Doesn't generate enough aggro? Doesn't do enough DPS? Doesn't know how to take charge of a group or a raid, or to assert himself?

Going to have to be a bit more specific than that.

Ive just looked on his build (he's not full prot anymore). It looks okay except he didnt take deflection. In every build thats a no no.

Its a very good talent and still very very easy to get (only TIER 1). I dont know how much money he got but 5% extra parry is vital.

Then every Otank should put at least 2 points in imp Demo shout (if the MT) doesnt have it. And imp TC might be nice to have as well.

(edited the shizzle about TC and Demo shout

did he just go 31 points in arms and skipped MS?!?

It seems he needs to learn the trees better, as well as just general warrior basics about abilities.

I tank a lot of regular instances and Heroics, so I'll put my gear out there.(My guild doesn't have a solid core for Kara, so getting 10 people into a raid is usually hard)

The #1 thing to do is have one set of gear for Tanking, and One set of gear for DPSing. My DPS gear is completely different from my tanking gear, minus the wrists that I havent yet found. My focus on Tanking gear is hitting 490 Defense first, then trying to scrape up as much dodge/parry as possible to remove damage done. Some don't prefer this, but I do, as I figure that all the stamina and armour in the world won't matter if you get hit every single time.

Once you get the proper gear for tanking, actually holding aggro is pretty easy if you mash your keys well enough.

Q = Shield block
E = Heroic Strike

Then you pretty much just spam 3 + 4 if you can, otherwise sunder if able. (sunder is actually in 2, but once I get 5 stacks I replace it with devastate).

Past that, it's just thunder clap + Bloodrage + sheld block + Q + 3 + 4 + 2
