I just rolled a pally as a serious alt. Im totally new to the class and still getting used to all spells that come with it. I'm highly curious about some basic strategic suggestions regarding PvP, esp world PvP with this class. What are some basic moves used in surviving gank attempts? What spec builds give good survivability yet can still allow fairly adequate questing? I've read a few posts on here and saw that Prot seems the way to go. I have my first five points in the holy tree to get strength boost. I then plan later to dump the rest of my points to prot all the way to 58. Good decision? If not fill me on the tricks of the trade. One final question is, if ganked (lets say 1v1 for example) is damage high enough to kill most classes, or is it better off to just get the hell outta dodge?

The best advice I could give is grow eyes on the back of your head. Not letting a guy sneak up on you is half the battle. Avoiding high traffic spots to avoid fights, you can kill tigers right next to nesingwary's and get ganked 20 time or run 40yards to away and not see a single pvp fight.

In terms of high level ganking there is not much you can do but die or /bubblehearth.

For equal level fights make sure you have BoF on your hotbar, heal early in pvp (don't wait until you are below 50% to heal, ever), JoW if you are out of mana. Don't fight other healers unless you have 20 minutes to waste, use your hammer of justice.

As for builds. 10-35 Ret. 35+ Prot is just fine (found it good for killing belf ret pallies). Don't touch holy till you are almost 70.

There are way too many mechanics for this class (for any class) to paint the entire PvP spectrum for you on a blank canvas. Not trying to be an *** here, but the best favor you can do yourself is to figure it out by your lonesome. If, after some experience, you find you're having problems, then come back here with some more specific questions--as specific as possible--and we'll try to help you.

See above.

Protection and Retribution both work for leveling. Read the sticky, there is plenty of good information in there.

Bad decision.

Again, go figure it out for yourself and come back if you have problems.

While Paladins are quite capable of winning at least some fights, they will never do so by out-damaging their opponents. They win by outlasting them in battles of attrition. Heal through their damage, cleanse their DoT's and debuffs, shield and heal to full, etc.

If you're looking to burst people down and win damage races, you could not have picked a worse class.

Ok that made some sense. I have a clearer picture on what to do. I have several characters on pvp servers so I know how they go lol. I just needed a bit of insight on basic pally moves to atleast survive an encounter, which were provided since I know that they do not put out enough outright damage. Sounds like endurance fights to me. Thanks all for your input.

i have a super secret special ultra awsome technique that i used to live through any gank. but im an alchemist and its kind important to be one for this to work cheaply.

devine shield
seal of justice
judge
stun
speed pot
horse after 15 sec

whats really funny is when i do this to a druid, i see them change forms about 6 times wondering why they dont get speed boost. you need the speed pot to actually make a gap, but once you have, they will not be able to do anything with justice judged to them.

if they resist the judge, well your a pally, survive untill you can judge again. then flee. if they resist the stun, well then its up in the air depending on class. keep your mouse over blessing of freedom and hope thats enough.

whats worse is that i never go very far as im usually questing. so they try to gank again and fail in the exact same way.

Indeed, Justice is great for that and for chasing folks who are flagged on their mounts. They don't get the idea to just stop and stand and fight.
