Oblivion or Spellstrike?Follow

#1 Oct 03 2007 at 12:06 PM Rating: Decent
I have looked at both. Currently I have two Oblivion pieces (Gloves and Spaulders) and the Incanter's trousers. A friend, who just had the patterns drop, wants me to get the Spellstrike set. (Of course, it would help him level a bit.<g>) I think the Oblivion pieces are better. The stamina and int stats seem to be better for the Oblivion pieces. The +damage is similar. Spellstrike has spell crit which Oblivion doesn't plus Spellstrike has more gem slots.

Of course, the Oblivion set is free with enough investment of time. Spellstrike is mucho dinero. And I want to get my epic flying mount. It's tough to choose.

What do you think?

Well, what's your prefered build - and do you mostly raid or pvp/bg/arena?

Plus to crit is far more important, imo, for a destro/ruin based build. For pvp ... pieces that give resiliance are pretty nice (and + sp dam) - and I think neither of these give resil.

This is your shot to call. Battle clothes are about 1200 on my server. That's about twelve days of acitivity for a typical farmer and/or daily-grinder (it's possible to make a good deal more than that if you have the time, but you won't be raiding or getting HPs).

Give us more info, and maybe we can generate some better help. GL

I am Demonology and mostly instancing and finishing up some quests in Netherstorm and SMV. I want to get into heroics and, ultimately, raid.

For raiding, you want spell damage and ... gah, what's it called - not plus to hit - it helps you overcome boss's resistance to your spells. Someone help me out here.

(edit, is it spell hit rating? oblvion gives some of that - spellstrike does, too)

Epic mounts are lovely, but you often get summoned to instances - the mounts, however, are good for dailies and farming (farm 5k to become a better farmer - ya, I know...) - but are otherwise fluff.

I would just point out that it really depends in what you want to invest that time.
It took me about same amount of time running Slab to finally see Murmur sword drop as it took me farming and doing dailies for my epic flyer.

it depends on the situation. the spellstrike is very good, but if you already have low hp/mana then you may not want to change to it, also as you said it's fairly expensive. personnaly I'd suggest getting the mana-etched set instead of the oblivion. it's stats are a bit less but the damage, crit and hit on it as well as the set bonuses are far greater than that of the oblivion set

Most important stats for raiding from Aran+:

1) Stam until you have around 7.5k HP unbuffed. (Comes easy w/ some loot, but without it you won't survive later Kara encounters or early Gruul/Mags. Too much splash).

2) Spell hit until 202. (single most efficient expenditure of itemization points to raise your DPS).

3) Spell Damage

4) Spell Crit. (It eventually overtakes damage as a way of sustaining your DPS but is more of a 2ndary consideration. Best to go for gear w/ combo of hit/damage on it).

5) Int. More mana IS good.

6) Everything else.

Penetration does NOT make the list. Mobs gain a bit of resistance due to level difference but for a raid boss this comes to 15 resistance to all schools and it cannot be overcome by penetration. Penetration is, for most intents and purposes, a purely PvP stat.

if there was such a thing as 'perfect' stats for a warlock I'd say it's

9k hp and mana prebuffs
202 +hit
20% crit before devestation (for all specs due to ISB)
32 spell penetration (except for bosses with high resistances, all bosses have 120 to all resistances. so presuming CoE/CoS are always on the target you need 32 penetration to make sure you don't get partial resists)
as much +damage/+shadow as you can get ^^

My spell hit is only +50 right now. I need to concentrate on that. Mana-etched drops in Heroics, right? If so, I need some rep runs before I can start on those.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

Where are you pulling this from?

couldn't remember where i got it from, but done a search and I've got an idea. (p.s. i was kinda off mark with it too)
all bosses do have a 'across the board' resistance rating of 6% chance (2% per level difference) for a partial resist (50% reduction generally). god knows where i got the 120 from... probably getting 'all bosses' mixed up with 'certain bosses'..lol. also this base 6% chance can't be decreased by spell penetration according to wowwikki sadly. so yeah... no spell penetration needed... lolz

Nope, Spellstrike is also free with enough investment of time. It's called farming :D And for some people I know, they could have farmed all the Spellstrike mats in the time it took them to get Oblivion >.>

Hit capped > dmg > crit, as said, making sure you have enough stamina to survive the raid-wide damage.

Iirc, there were a couple Naxx bosses that still had ~120 resist AFTER CoS/CoE. That might be where you got that number.

Exactly my point.
I farmed 375 tailoring and full FSW set before I even saw one piece of oblivion drop.
By the time I saw the robe I had plus farmed girdle of ruination.
When the first shoulders drop I had full battlecast and finally I got the hood now when I am 2 spellcloths away from full spellstrike set.

Ok, I know I am extremely picky and moody when it comes to instances running, but I simply have no trust in loot luck. I ran SL for that Murmur sword few k short of exalted and I saw the robe of oblivion being DEd at least 15 times.
I am sure if I was running to get that robe I would never see it drop.

i disagree with hitcap > dam > crit

personnaly I'd say hitcap > crit > dam BUT only until you hit 20% crit rate before devestation. after that damage > crit.

why?

well because of the first tier destruction talent. Improved ShadowBolt. a 20% bonus to all raid shadow damage including dots as well as direct damage is hard to match with +damage, also the 20% mark is because statistically speaking, from that point onwards ISB should be on a target 80+% of the time simply from your own shadowbolt casts.

I can see the logic in that, Jenova, especially considering just getting hit capped and crit rounded out will put you at a pretty decent level for spell power in the first place. The **** isn't hard to come by by any stretch of the imagination.

First off, gems. It's about the same to grab the vendor gems as it is to go the AH and pick up some decent ones, though ideally you'll get the really good ones. This would be the Runed (+dmg) family of red gems, Glowing (dmg/sta) family of purple gems, and Veiled (dmg/hit) or Potent (dmg/crit) family of orange gems. if you find it necessary, get the +8hit yellow gems, but if at all possible stick with getting hit through the Veiled gems or the gear itself.

Spellstrike Hood and Spellstrike Pants, gemmed correctly, with the Revered Sha'tar helm enchant and Runic Spellthread. Girdle of Ruination for belt. PvP bracers (with enchant) and necklace. Heroics offhand and trinket. The Black Stalk wand from Heroic Underbog. Rings from Heroic Durnholde, Spirit Shards, Exalted Cenarion, Exalted Scryers. If you've got money to burn, Belt of Blasting and Boots of Blasting are both extremely good.

Enchants on everything. Sha'tar revered for helm, Scryer's/Aldor honored or exalted for shoulder, Runic Spellthreard from a tailor for pants, +150health to chest, Boar's Speed to boots, and +dmg to wrist/hands, and consider Soulfrost to weapon.
