I used to alternate between Mage Armor and Ice Armor depending on the situation, but now I always use Molten Armor. I can't think of a reason to use the other 2 over Molten. The % added to crit and the % lowered to crit on you is great and the 75+ damage that someone takes when attacking you in melee is an added bonus. Am I missing something abou the other 2 that make them better?

Ice Armor is good for PVP, an extra chill effect against melee players and slowing their attack speed.

I almost never use Ice Armor anymore, though I also don't PvP very much.

I alternate between Molten and Mage depending on the situation.

Molten: General Farming, Instances where I know the tank and raids

Mage : Primal Fire farming, Most PuG groups where the tank isn't as good or as geared as I would like them to be. I also use Mage armor on all long boss fights as to me getting more spells off in the 10+ mins is much more useful than crit'ing more and wanding for 3+ outta the 10 mins waiting for mana or pot timers.

Lets not forget where Molten came from and why it has a superior effect.

It is from BC and it is ONLY available to players with BC. Just another incentive to purchase their products as well as keep Mages up to par on the Damage front.

That being said, it is in my opinion definatly not the 'only worthwhile armor.' It really depends on your build heavily.

With Impact Molten has a nifty extra stun, but with Frostbite Ice Armor has an argueably better extra effect (higher % and longer lasting Freeze which can be coupled with an Ice Lance/CoC for excessive damage.)

In situations where your only damage incoming is going to be AEs and you're going to find yourself off of resting Mana Regeneration for extended periods of time the 30% through is going to help -- trust me.

It more depends on what you're fighting and how you're fighting it. If you're grinding/farming on things that you're expecting to take hits from, Ice armor's Attack Slow effect can help tremendously, especially when coupled with the Armor's extra armor. Ice armor is also a very helpful traveling shield, as it will slow down anyone trying to hunt you down if they hit you with Melee.

Molten armor stands as mostly an offensive shield that helps tremendously against easy AE farming (damage per hit) and in strained situations can provide the extra crit % you need.

Mage armor is a relatively good source of Resistance against all Casters, as it get's hard to find that high end resist without sacraficing a lot of other stats. The 30% mana regen helps out ALOT of extended fights for certain builds.

I do the same thing, I only really use Mage armor for the longer boss fights where mana conservation can be an issue or I have to use a lot of burst/aoe damage (Illihoof, etc).

I tend to use mage armor for every instance (no BC). Why use ice when you ain't getting hit? Can't say much for molten though.

It honestly depends on the spec.
As a frost mage, I'd certainly use ice armor, not all the time, but namely in duels against warriors or rogues. Why? Because the slow is simply priceless.
However, molten armor's 10% proc on the stun is also great, not to mention the almost 3% resilience, as well as the crit chance, and the occasional crit to inflict an ignite to prevent stealth for 4 seconds.

If you're a frost mage with permafrost, I'd go ice armor definitely against any melee class. But molten armor pretty much beats over Mage armor, as it gives so little now outside of raiding.
