Tank class pros/consFollow

#1 Oct 01 2007 at 2:15 PM Rating: Good
I'm trying to decide on the class of my new Tauren character. I've never played the horde before and thought I could explore that aspect of the game.

I'm interested in trying out a tanking class and basically debating between a feral druid and a warrior. I like that a feral druid can tank and dps well in a single talent tree. The warrior has more combat options, a shield, and health potions.

So am I missing anything obvious? What are the major advantages and disadvantages of each class?

I realize this is a bit of a loaded question being posted on the druid forum but I figure its best to go to the experts.

If it makes a difference I will be partying with my wife 90% of the time who will either be a blood elf rogue or undead warlock. My main is a 70 priest, our guild has made it through most bosses of karazhan and I've haven't seen a huge difference in healing either class.

Well like a noob I head over to the Warrior thread and the very first post I see is this same question. I would direct anyone interested in my response over to the warrior forum. Thanks.

Well I give this one a shot but mind you I've never played a warrior...

As a druid:
1. you will have Higher HP and armor than a warrior of your level (unless he is outragusly geared), and you will have more health than a warrior (unless he is outragusly geared).
2. you can self heal.
3. you have DPS in the same tree as tanking.
4. you can respec to try spell DPS or healing.
5. you get early acess to travel forms including flight form.
6. you only need 415 def (With SotF) as opposed to the 490 that warriors need.

As a Warrior:
1. you will have more ways to avoid damage than a druid (Block, Parry, Dodge vs just dodge), but will have3 to respec to get any real DPS.
2. you can use health pots, health stones ect. with out having to shift forms.
3. you...... um..... get plate?
4. you... (I really wish I knew more about warrior to make them seem usefull but in all reality I have tanked every instance I've been in (save a few where the warrior was prot specced and couldn't DPS) and told countless warrios to sit back an DPS. I really feel bad for those guys.)

I'm sorry if I can't make Warrior seem appealing I prolly missed a lot that the warrior can bring I just don't know them.

I'll help ya out here on warrior strengths.

Aside from what you've already listed.

Warriors have emmensely better "oh sh*t" abilities than druids. Druids get feral rejuv which ticks for 250. Warriors get last stand which gives them 30% of their total hp on top of the hp they already have. Ex. warrior has 15k hp hits last stand and has just a tad under 20k. Draw back is that once last stand's duration is up all that extra hp goes bye bye, it isn't a permanent heal just and oh crap I'm bout to die heal.

Warriors also have shield wall which imo is the best oh sh*t ability there is for tanking. 75% reduction in dmg taking from all forms (spell dmg included) on top of your normal dmg mitigation.

Warriors also have better "snap" aggro. Druids however have better threat per second, once they get their lead they are very hard for the dps to catch up to.

Hope that helps.

I'll add my 2 cents to this as well. I have a 70 arms/prot warrior and a 55 feral druid. I have to say that I enjoy both classes very much, but from a tanking perspective, I much prefer the warrior to the druid.

Both make excellent tanks, but the warrior just has so many more abilities than a bear druid. Granted I haven't gotten lacerate yet, but until I got mangle at level 50 there really were only a couple of abilities available in bear form. I found tanking in bear form to be extremely boring compared to my warrior. There just really isn't a lot to do. Swipe if there are multiple targets, maul the main target, and keep demoralizing roar up. I just find that boring when I know all of the abilities that a warrior has that I'm missing.

With that said, overall I prefer the druid to my warrior. I like the fact that I can tank and DPS effectively with the same spec. It's just a matter of collecting multiple sets of gear. I find the druid to be a much better at soloing. The ability to self heal is great.

It really all comes down to what you want to do. Both are very well suited to tanking the 5 mans, including heroics. If you plan to raid anything beyond Kara, warriors start to make the better main tanks, while druids really shine as off tanks.

As a warrior, decent amounts of your mitigation also come from abilities (Shield Block, Thunderclap), whereas for a druid it's primarily just having obscene amounts of armor.

Druids tend to take more damage overall, but with the armor and health advantages, it tends to be in a somewhat smoother pattern; there are fewer spikes. Druids have no way to deal with Crushing Blows, however, whereas a warrior can stop may of these through the use of Shield Block.

Druids tend to have an advantage on purely physical fights. Warriors, through Defensive Stance and Imp. Def. Stance (and spell reflect in certain situations), have a bit of an advantage against casters.

Druids tank three targets better than a warrior; warriors are better at groups of two or four.

Warriors will occasionally get rage-starved if they get a series of avoided attacks; druids, who get more rage from their own damage through Primal Fury, are less prone to this. However, a full prot warrior has a few cheaper abilities to get him through this, while druids don't. (This is a minor difference relatively speaking.)

On a similar note, however, I tend to believe druids to be superior secondary tanks. They have better rage generation, whereas a warrior not only has more trouble generating rage but loses his best low-rage move, Revenge, if he isn't constantly under fire.

Feral Charge is easier to use than Intervene, which requires a macro to be truly effective. However, a warrior with good micro has two abilities, Intervene and Intercept, he can use to get around.

Warriors who spec MS/Deathwish can be tremendous in PvP; feral druids are comparatively poor in such settings. They *can* do well but it's much harder, whereas MS warriors are in high demand.

That's about all I can think of...
