Should i go for Spell dmg or Crit % for enchants ???Follow

#1 Sep 28 2007 at 1:51 PM Rating: Decent
Alright so i'm gettin my final gear for my frost mage. I am mostly a pvp player i dont really care about pve high end stuff and raiding.

As for enchants, i'd like to get an opinion on if i should get more spell dmg or more crit % ??

Don't forget that i'm more of a pvp player.

I'd also like to know if i should really consider spell penetration gems or if they're more used in pve to lower mobs resistance to spells.

Thanks

mob resistance to spells is done with spell hit, not penetration. If you want to crtically hit opponents you will need high spell penetration to make up for their resilience. I would go with spelldmg because resilience may block the chance at critical hits, but as long as they don't have resist gear on it should still hit harder.

Frost mages should focus more on spelldamage than spell crit, as talents give a big boost to crit anyway. Spell penetration is a purely pvp stat (pve equivalent is spell hit) so is worth looking at :) Not sure of the 'maths' on how much penetration is needed to make a difference and whether it's worth it though...

1 point of penetration for 1 point of resistance. In other words, not enough penetration in the world to save you from a demo lock with a felhunter out. Smiley: laugh

For PvE, I actually like having a bit of spell penetration, 20-40 or so, as a bit of a safety net as some things do occasionally have some resistances and the locks don't always make with the CoE like they should. Smiley: laugh

Does penetration affect resilience? It was my understanding that it only affect resists.

If it does, stand by for incoming nerf, because I don't think any other classes have something that negates resilience.

It doesn't negate resilience, it negates +resist stats. A moderate amount is worthwhile in PvP but not really a huge consideration.

Nah, you can kill a non Demo lock with a felhunter out if you get the drop on him, outgear him, and can Trinket AP Pyro PoM Pyro him. Smiley: laugh

...well, maybe half the time. Smiley: frown

The lock still wins if you die from his dots after he/she/it dies, so make that 33% of the time.

IMO the mage enchants are setout for you at lvl 70, especially PVPwise.
20 spelldmg on gloves, 40/sunfire/soulfrost/ on weps, resil/150 health on chest, shoulder enchant from scryers/aldor, head from cenarion, legs from mystic/runic spellthread, boots add stam, bracers as well, and that's it.
I don't even remember having spell crit enchants.

As for gems, I'd prefer +hit gems or +resil gems over spell penetration at any time, its sort of a dead trait nowadays, resistance (other than in SOME raiding situations) and spell penetration, that is.
