Need advice for OTing KaraFollow

I know this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find any of the posts. I've gotten my warrior to the point where his gear is good enough for me to OT in Kara (at least for the early stages). I'm not worried about any of the pulls where I'll actually be tanking mobs, but on boss fights (i.e. Moroes) where I have to stay second on the threat meter are a different story.

My basic question is: How do I stay second on the threat list? With that said, here are my follow up questions:

1. My current build is 35/5/21. Is this build well suited for this role, or should I be heavier on DPS or Protection?

2. I'll have to be in my tanking set for when the MT gets gouged, so I'm not going to be doing much DPS. I'm assuming that I should be using my 2 hander when I don't have aggro and then switch to the sword & shield when I get it. So while DPSing, do I stay in defensive stance for the additional threat, or should I be in berserker for the additional damage?

3. Which abilities should I focus on? With my current build I really only have a couple high threat abilities: Sunder, HS, and Revenge. Revenge is useless because I won't be taking the majority of the hits, so I can't rely on it to generate threat. HS will deprive me of generating rage in a fight where I will pretty much be rage starved. So I think sunder is really my only option. Do I just spam it as much as I can? Or, is this something I need to address with my build (see #1).

4. How do I deal with my rage issues? Do I just make sure I have plenty of Mighty Rage Pots, or is there some better way that I can deal with this.

Thanks a bunch,
Camel

1. Build is fine. You don't have a link so I'll suggest AM and imp sunder be included for the extra rage and extra rage efficentcy.

2. you can use a two hander if you like for the extra rage gen but dmg will be miniscule in tank gear so that doesn't really matter. Just have a macro set up to swap you to S&B on the fly. Stay in defensive stance and spam your most threat efficent abilites. This will be sunder and anytime revenge pops up. Don't worry about using anything else since your rage will be severely limited you have to make the most out of it.

3. Kinda answered it in question 2 lol.

4. During the time he is on you you will get a good amount of rage. Don't be tempted and use "not so efficent" abilites when you have that much cause trust me just using your most rage efficent abilites you will still be starved by the time he turns to you again.

Thanks very much for the advice Jim. My armory links are in my signature.

That's pretty much what I was expecting, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something important. I've watched a number of our guild off tanks struggle on the Moroes fight to the point where on my rogue I've been forced to stand and do nothing because I've managed to catch up to the OT after killing the adds and wiping my threat with vanish. That's with salvation. They've complained about rage starvation and not being able to generate threat. I don't want to say that their bad, because I don't have any experience as a tank on this fight. I just want to make sure I'm not "that guy" that makes the DPS stand around and do nothing.

I don't have improved sunder, but I will definitely consider picking it up for this.

Feral druids are actually best for this kind of OTing. But if warriors are all you have to work with then well this is all the advice I can give ya. Normally when we do moroes I'm OTing the adds in my dps gear cause well they hit like girls, and we have the MT and a druid on moroes.

Back before we had any geared druids I had this roll and I learned quick to use my rage very very sparingly. So as I said the key to doing this as a warrior is making sure you squeeze every bit of threat that you can out of your available rage.

One other thing you could do is to kinda of half assed MT tank moroes (just enough threat to keep him off the healers) until you have a full rage bar then let your MT grab aggro off of you with a shield slam or two.

a much easier way to build threat on moroes is done by tanking one of the adds [one of the warriors usually].

you don't shackle the ms warrior unless the tank gets gouged / blinded and you pick up moroes also. You don't cc the prot warrior at all. This requires your raid to be a little more coordinated and more adjusting, but you should be able to take quite a few hits before you die even with the MS debuff, since moroes will only hit you a few times before going back to the MT.

If you're using this tactic, just keep shield block up and just spam revenge, tclap and demo on moroes/your add and keep up shouts on your party for the extra [although not much] threat. The threat from the revenges will let you be #2 very easily, when the dps kills the rest of the mobs to the point of only moroes and _________ warrior left, kill moroes first using this same tactic.

also, judge yourself on the threat meter. If you have a good lead over the 3rd place person, have the dps kill the last add before getting on moroes, if not, kill moroes first. Usually, this tactic has it so you kill moroes first :).

Jim,

Thanks for the advice. I know the OT role for Moroes is better suited for a druid than myself, but we only have 1 feral druid in the guild and he's been playing his Shadow Priest pretty much exclusively lately. My DPS gear is crap, so really the only chance I have of getting a spot is to be the OT. I'm gonna need a few Kara drops before I'm ready to MT or do anything beyond the first 4 bosses.

Russki,

Thanks for sharing that strategy. I hadn't really considered tanking one of the adds while I OT Moroes, but I can definitely see how that could work well. My guild tends to be a little over-cautious with the amount of CC we use, so it's just a matter of convincing my Guild Leader that it's a good idea.

Thanks again guys, you've been very helpful.

Thats a great idea russki. Don't know that I'd want the MS warrior on me but having the prot warrior to feed rage is a great idea. Will have to try that next time I OT moroes.

My recommendation:

As an off tank, all you really need to get is Defiance (15% extra threat). With the 2.3 changes to TM (Increased threat from Rampage/MS) you should be good.

I've done the extra add on the OT (usually using hunter MD) but the problem with this is that the prot warrior will disarm you, which gimps your threat again. If you get Omen rather then KTM it shows individual threat, so you can build threat on moroes and know where you are without the threat from the adds showing up. I think that would make threat management for that fight much easier.

you can still shield bash / slam while you are disarmed. This will do more threat than attacking just moroes and waiting on the rage to come from regular tanking dps to SS. [plus, no revenge or nothin' if you don't have an add, which is a lot of threat!]

I main tank kara regulary and i would want my OT to be full Prot spec. Why? Because if i some how die, i exspect the OT to be able to handle any mobs or bosses. If your arn't fully prot then you will most likey take to much damage and wipe. So if you want to OT kara all the time then go full Prot. Other than that ur just a "Bad DPS/ Bad tank" if u split ur talents between DPS and Prot.
