Does anyone know when S3 is coming out?
I just started to get merc (gloves) with a 5v5 rating at 1600 (crap I know but its just free points while I farm AV) is it worth it to get merc? or just get 5k arena points over time then buy 3/5 pieces of s3?

I'd say it'll be another month at least. They have to get 2.2.2 out, and that will probably be another week or two, and then all the testing of 2.3 - the main thing being bug testing ZA, which could take a while.
Plus, you'll need a minimum arena rating in order to buy Season 3 - the number 1900 has floated around a lot, but I'd say if you can't get to at least 1750, don't even both saving up.

The minimum arena rating was with regards only to weapons, Isfreak. IIRC.

You should get different pieces of gear from different sources to optimize your investment. You have arenas, battlegrounds, spirit shards, badges of justice, crafted, reputation, and PvE drops to choose from. Do some research and figure out where to get the best gear combination.

It's for all gear, not just weapons. Blue posts have put weapon requirement at 1850, and shoulders at 2000 (because they're more visible... uh... okay O.o). It's also based off your INDIVIDUAL wins/loses, rather than the teams, to keep people from just getting in a 2000 rated team for a day to buy gear.

Yes, I saw that post. Weapons at 1750, shoulders at 2000, no requirements for the rest.

I actually like the thinking behind putting shoulders at 2000. You don't need the shoulders to complete the set bonus, so you don't miss _that_ much if you can't get up to 2000 and have to get the older ones. On the other hand, the shoulders can be _very_ distinctive, like the priestly angel wings for our current set. It's supposed to be a visually distinctive feather in your cap for the good teams-- like the armored nether drake, only your actual arena opponents can see it.

Ah, you seem to have read into it more than you should have. That post only listed those 2, but other blue posts indicate that the entire Season 3 set has rating requirements.
EDIT: Here we go. The current season will always have rating requirements, the previous season won't, two seasons previous will be gotten from honor.
