29 PvP, No TwinkingFollow

#1 Sep 21 2007 at 5:35 PM Rating: Decent
Hi there.

I have decided to stop at 29 for some Battlegrounds. Get me some WSG and AB gear, and learn more about how to play my Priest in PvP. I usually do this with all my characters, so I can keep myself up to date for each tier with both gear, and PvP skills.

However, two things came to mind. With all my characters, I found that all the Damage talents and DPS talents that usually goes with leveling, rarely benefit my team all that much. It merely helps to stack up the kills. Another, was that I have rarely seen that those few talent points you have to play around with matters all that much if you go for the DPS tree. In this priest's case, Shadow. The second thing was, that I don't like Twinks. I am not the kind that use Godmode cheats or cheats of any kind in singleplayer, and against other people I like to have a challenge as well as a somewhat fair fight. If anything, I prefer the odds against me. No challenge, no fun.

So, I thought that since I play a fine Healing class, why not go Holy or Disc? Keeping a full group of attackers or defenders alive should prove far more beneficial to my team than throwing SW:P and Mind Blasts/Flays around. And then, I got to doubting. I don't know my class very well. I solo stuff, and the builds I've studied have all been in the Soloing/DPS variety.

So I've come here to gain some advice, and help. Yes, this is a "Rate my build plz lol" thread, but I hope it will be received in the spirit it is offered. Not as a lazy **** that just wants others to do all the work, but as someone who is merely asking for more experienced players advice.

I got a few builds I wondered about:
Holy/Disc combo: 10/10/0
Disc/Holy combo:13/7/0
Full Holy:0/20/0

Personally, I am leaning towards the first build, since it will give me high healing capabilities, without leaning on spellcrit, since at that level it will be low to begin with. Secondly, it will give me some survivability, and it can save the life of the Rogue/Warrior/insert DPS class here, that is protecting me or attacking the other team.

Any experienced PvPers here, that could point out the things I'm sure I'm missing, and the points I should/should not have spent?

As for gear, I assume trying to load up on +healing would be somewhat pointless at that level. There shouldn't be all that much of +healing gear available, and I don't think it would make all that much difference on the healing. I was thinking mainly Stamina and Intelligence for high manapool, and survivability. For the few lowbie enchants I could afford, I would think a couple of +health/Stam enchants to increase my survivability. Can't heal unless I'm alive, right?

So, in conclusion, I am merely here to gain the knowledge I'm sure is gathered amongst the respective "senior" posters here. Hehe... "senior". I can never say that again without chuckling. Err, disregard that, Hunter forum thing. I am here to hear what you guys think about my choices, and hopefully get some pointers.

Regards
The North

How is twinking a character cheating? Everyone else can get the exact same gear as they have.

*sigh* I am not going to turn this thread into another Twink discussion. Let's just keep it to that that I despise the fact that anyone who only plays casually will for the most part stand a snowball's chance in hell of surviving. Not everyone have 70s on the same server to foot the bill. Don't mind gearing. That's level restricted anyway. It's End-Game enchants I don't like.

Bah, forget the Twinking or No twinking part. If you want to discuss that, make a new topic, preferrably in some other forum and let me know where it is. This thread is for another topic entirely.

The 10/10 specc is imo the best because it offers the best for Healing-PvP.

I´m quite to tired to explain every aspect, but if you want my opinion, do that.

10/10. For one thing, instants own in pvp and renew(you will be casting this nonstop on your team mates) and PWS are instans.
Resistance to fear/stun/silence can be life savers anytime.
Divine Fury will not make a huge difference for 5 talent points, but will help a lot, because heal will be your main "big" heal.
Healing Focus speak for himself, good enough for 2 talents points, but if that dmg are not from dot's , you will fear anyway.
IPWF:2 talent points for 6 stamina on you not good, but if u put it on 5 mates, that's 30 stamina good, 10 mates 60 stamina very good. You got it.

I believe Jordster had a priest at that level for a while back in the day. You might see what builds worked for him.

Right, I guess my instincts weren't far off the mark buildwise then.
When it comes to gear, I am still fairly convinced Stamina and Int is the way to go. On all my other characters, stamina has been a mainstay, and on caster classes Int was needed simply because I couldn't get enough downtime to top myself off, often enough.

Any arguments against that, that I haven't thought about?

I played a 29 holy priest for a few weeks and it was a lot of fun. I did full holy, and geared myself towards healing and surviving. I didn't do a lot of damage but I always lead in healing by a long shot. By the time I was ready to move on towards level 39 (I'm 32 now), I had +120 healing and all of the pvp gear that was applicable. Lots of folks say not to bother with +healing, but it certainly had an impact on my game play.

The best thing you will learn about healing in the 29 bracket is mana efficiency. Renew is a wonderful thing and benefits 100% from +healing.

Also, you say you don't like twinks, but if you can swing it, do yourself a favor and find someone to do the silver spellthread on your leg armor (+15 sta, +46 healing). It gives you more life for survival and the +healing on it adds 9 to each tick of renew. It is well worth it. Couple that with the AB and WSG gear and you'll do great, but expect to be the prime target.

I don't really like your 10/10/0 build simply because you don't get either of the two amazing talents available to you: Inner Focus and Holy Nova.

Inner Focus is a nice thing no matter what you do, and Holy Nova adds a no-cooldown option for getting people out of stealth, which can come in handy in AB.

Actually, Shadow isn't so bad for PvP either because you can get Blackout and Mind Flay, both amazing in PvP.

I'd probably go with 11/9/0 and if I found myself targetted exceptionally often swap some points to get Martyrdom or Spell Warding. (Spell Warding of course only if there are enough DPS casters in the battlegroup.)

Anyways, you can't get much wrong at that level build-wise, so spec the way it feels right.

As for gear, you know what to get pretty well.

Thanks everyone. The advice was sound, and my Priest will stand a decent chance of survival, while keeping a group alive. Thanks to all that replied.

I think what I was trying to get across is that if you don't twink your priest, you can still have tremendous value in the battlegrounds. However, you will either need to go all offense or all healing (sounds like you want to go all healing). You can't do both without investing serious cash in gear.

I leveled my priest from 18 to 60 almost exclusively in battlegrounds back in the good old days when you got experience for marks. In the X1-X4 levels I would run instances and quests to get good gear and then self-enchant it. I wasn't a twink per se, but I had good gear.

If you show up in green gear, I assure you that you will not survive long and be very frustrated. Priests are top priority targets no matter what, and you won't be doing much healing or DPS in mediocre gear. But you will find this out soon enough :).
