It feels like I have a slightly different angle to work. I have a 43 mage, strictly PVE, that I have played from the off with the same 4 friends in a group each Tuesday. While two of the group are quite experienced and have grouped with their other characters, I am the only one who has really developed a caster so I get some advice from them and would appreciate some expert advice from other mages.

We see my role as, in no particular order, crowd control, pulling casters towards our tank, AoE and a healthy level of damage. Do I need to worry about taking aggro off our tank and perhaps go for a 33/28 arcane/frost to give me some slowing effects rather than the Baron's fairly spectaular 33/28 arcane/fire build for more damage?

If anyone has thought this through I would appreciate their contribution. I am building an arcane/frost tree as I write but this only cost me 1g so if I get it wrong I can afford to re-spec.

I'd probably stick to one tree at that level, you just get more cool skills like that in my opinion.
If it's strictly about pulling aggro, don't go frost, you can always nova and wait for the tank to regain aggro, at low level, stuff won't 1 hit kill you, and at high level, you should really pay attention to your threat. I suggest getting KTM or omen to avoid pulling aggro in the first place.

I'd also suggest going 40/21 for instancing if you're mixing it up with arcane, you'll get a ton of extra spell damage.
