New Warlock, can't get Imp to attackFollow

I'm new to WoW, just started yesterday, my problem is that I can't get my Imp to engage in battle. I'm using the default control layout, so attack is ctrl-1, follow is ctrl-2, stay is ctrl-3, fireball is ctrl-4. If I target a mob and press ctrl-1 the Imp will say some kind of smart remark and won't budge, if I target a mob and press ctrl-4 the Imp will shoot a fireball at the mob and then just stand there while the mob beats him silly, if I keep pressing ctrl-4 the Imp will keep shooting fireballs but will never engage the mob.

If I engage a mob with my character the Imp will not join the fight to help me out. I've tried all of the above with the Imp on Aggressive mode or defensive mode and nothing seems to help. On Aggressive mode my Imp will never attack a mob on his own.

Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried searching arround and I haven't seen a solution for it, it's probably some stupid setting that I've messed up, so if someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

but isn't he supose to attack other mobs that attack me? or if I put him in aggressive mode isn't he supose to go out and attack mobs?

You probably arent noticing his attacks, if your getting to close to mobs and drawing the aggro first. Put him on defensive. Then he will attack anything that attacks you. Later as you level, you will get phase shift for him, and prolly rarely use him in your attacks, depending on your playstyle of course.

(i use my imp to tank at 70 lol, just for initial aggro)

Right now I have my Imp on Aggressive, I sent him to shoot a fireball at a wolf, he ran out shot the fireball, then ran back to me and stood there with his back to the mob as the mob hit him about 15 times to kill him. Am I supose to have to keep hitting ctrl-4 over and over and over again, or is the imp supose to fight on his own?

No, its bugged, talk to a GM about it. On defensive he would automatically attack anyone who attacks you (spam fireballs till hes out of mana). If he's on aggressive he'd pick a target within about 10 yards and spam fireballs on his own. When you send him to attack (CTRL-1), again he'll spam fireballs till he's OOM.

Your imp is bugged, I've never heard of that, but its definately not right. Like I said, talk to a GM.

Another thing it could be .... do you have firebolt set to autocast? If it is, there should be swirly gold lines around the button. If it doesn't, then right click it to turn it on auto cast. Once you do that, the imp will constantly attack whatever target you send him to attack.

I hope it's this, an easy fix and not some sort of bug :)

now that you mention it, if you right clicked fireball, and turned off auto cast, he will only cast once when you press attack.

OMG that was it, it was that auto cast was off. Geez, I feel like such a noob. Thank you all for helping, I had a call into a GM but I was waiting a while.

Thanks again everyone, this seems to be a great MMO community.
