I've decided to take up Blacksmithing, and my original plan was to make the Dragonmaw mace.
I was wondering, those of you that are blacksmithing, what made you choose Dragonmaw over The Planar Edge?
As far as a side by side comparison goes:

Dragonmaw |-| Planar Edge
Mace |-| Axe
172-320 |-| 159-296
91.1 dps |-| 84.3 dps
Speed 2.70 |-| Speed 2.70
+9 stamina |-| +42 Attack Power
Chance on hit: |-| +20 crit.
Increase haste |-|
by 210 for 10s. |-|

So, what makes the mace better than the axe? Is it the haste proc?

Well i have the lowest tier to this right now that i just created. Drakesfist hammer.

The reason i chose this was the 212 haste rating and the higher top end at the end. Your WF crits and SS take advantage of the higher top end. I also already have 26% chance to crit as it stands without mongoose procing. When you get the haste proc off of Drakesfist plus flurry and with a bloodlust thrown in for good messure when the haste drops down you can maintain the Sweet spot speed of 1.54. With a haste trinket you could maintain that speed for an even greater length of time. The proc i have noticed happens almost twice in every fight if not more.

more or less calenthe has this thread under wraps but if you truly wanna do broken dps go elemental, I'm at only 828 dmg and I have just over 1.3k dps un buffed, but I have to say an enhancement shammy can be buffed much further than an elemental shammy, unless there is an elemental shammy getting to eat the stormstrike charges... YUM 2k lit bolts. WTB CoE that ups nature dmg taken as well

I am staying enhancement, it is more viable in 25 mans when you have 3 rogues and a fury warrior in the raid, provides considerable increase to overall raid dps, while still holding my own. My spec is not in question here, that is decided upon.
I'm merely trying to take the best path to the best weapon.

Ty Calenthe, that is the input I was looking for.
My reason for questioning the mace vs. the axe is that we had a mace spec'd rogue, and we made him repsec, as it was decided that mace spec isn't good for 25 man content.
I didn't debate this, as I dont have a rogue. My shammy is my one and only melee character. So, in short, I was wondering why its bad for rogues, but good for shamans.

It's not so much that maces are bad for rogues as that daggers (or even swords) are better.

The haste rating proc on the drakefist is just too sexy for a shammy and the top end damage on it will make things go pop with a good windfury proc.

Axes are for melee DPS. Hammers are for Melee tankers.

Go to Thottbot.com. Then run a search for weapons with the highest DPS. Then run a search for highest Crit rate, and one for AP. AP and CR are very important to a shammy! Axes and swords have the better numbers. Along with daggers. Axes are Better if you don't have the resources to make all. Blunt force VS Sharp edges.

I use all Blacksmith armours and weapons. Keep in mind that you can change your Master choice at any time. Only learn recipes for items your are going to make.

Fact of the matter is. All that DPS isn't anything. If you don't proc and hit hard. Use them all depending on spec.

Personally, I think. A resto/ehn, or whatever shammy. With just Thundering strikes can hit hard as hell. That talent is the meat of the entire tree. (in my PoV) And pack a major punch with your spell damage.

Try it out. Can't go wronge with, 1.5k earth shield procs, around 30% crit rate, 1k'ish AP, 12k HP, and anywhere from 6k to 10k mana. You hit and stay alive a lot longer then most. Shaman are awsome at healing while taking hits!

You'll be addicted after the first time. You meet a fury warrior face to face. And beat them with over 90% HP and 50% mp. LoL! Warriors will always just be group tools in WoW.

If your all about running raids as a Melee DPSer. Then I still would go with axes. I'd use the best I could get. I don't like daggers, due to the low numbers in DPS, CR, and AP compared to Axes. The speed plus raid buffs would only earn to unneeded threat and lower DPS. Also I don't need the haste procs. I have mongoose... /wink

Right now I use Planar Edge, and Grand Marshal axes. Average hit is for 500ish. While white crits proc around 1k to 2k. With rock biter and my own buffs. WF is good to, but I think PvE is more about constant DPS. Not a big hit every few hits. You want your buffs and crits procing non-stop. No delays!

In a raid group, you should be using DW. With out any doubt. The DPS is better, threat is better and Shamanistic Rage and flurry proc every few seconds. No chance of those buffs dieing with DW and decent gearz.

Two-handers are for PvP Stormstrikers. Your purpose is to gank. Any attackers below 60% or around 50%. Thats the best way to add to a good team, and bring foes down fast. You should be hitting for around 4k to 7k in 3 seconds. Thats how we are "Supposed" to Stormstrike. We are not stand alone plate wearing tanks. We are head-hunters dropping down on our targets, from the side. Bringing the fury of god.

I'm dragging on again.

I made the maces, after the axes. I use the axes for heavy hits. The maces for looks and boredom. My numbers are WAY better with my axes. I preform WAY better with the axes AP, and crit rate. PLUS, the all mighty Mongoose!

No, when a Shaman looks for a weapon the DPS line is irrelevant, we are looking for slow weapons with the highest damage per HIT. It is the base damage that matters not the DPS as our damage comes from windfury procs.

The master maces are far and away better enhancement weapons than the master axes and WILL return the higher damage over the course of a raid.
