Pet Loyalty GrindFollow

#1 Sep 05 2007 at 12:35 PM Rating: Decent
I'm trying to get a new pet for dps at 70, so I tamed a 70 cat from Skettis. Now, I've been chillin for a while now with this bad boy with only growl (grr). How long does it take for him/her/it to gain loyalty levels so I can get some effing training points? Is there some way (other than to keep feeding it, which I have been) to expedite this process(?)

Thanks!

you need to fight with it to get it to gain loyalty I thought.

They will gain loyalty as long as the little face beside your pet's avatar is yellow with mouth as horizontal line (contented) or green with smiling face (happy). A pet will gain loyalty faster with the green face.

My early impression was that fighting raising loyalty quicker than not. However after grinding out leveling of my pig recently, I'm starting to doubt that. I bumped him up five levels before he moved up a loyalty level. He was way lower level than my hunter.

It seems to me that as long as that yellow/green face is up it's gaining loyalty. My cat just went up from 5-6 loyalty lvl in town and all I did was have it out while I was grinding up leather working.

A lot, lot quicker than levelling a pet from low levels to catch up with a high level hunter

Be thankful and know it won't take you long in the grand scheme of things :)

I was hacked and the nasty farmers abandoned my pet when i was lvl 58 and i now have to level up a level 30 pet to 60 :-(

*Dreams that perhas Blizzard will help us by modifying the way pet levels as some rumors are saying*

Easiest way to gain loyalty:

Take him into instances with you!

However at level 70 it takes about 2-3 instance runs just for the loyalty to reach level 2 :(

That is a very interesting article. And it supports what I’ve experienced over the years.

In lvling my ravager I took him through botanica and steamvaults, I ended the last instance with my pet gaining 2 loyalty lvls and one actual lvl. I would say for good measure, keep the pet happy and run instances with it (Soloing is a bad idea because you dont want to deal with pulling aggro off your lvl 63 pet and get beat on by a lvl 70 mob.).

How to gain loyalty and/or levels for a new pet really just depends on what you want to get out of it. If you are in a big hurry to level your pet then instances are a good way to go, assuming you have that option. Many people don’t. But I prefer to photograph two birds with one exposure, as it were. For my level 70 hunter leveling up a level 35 wolf I worked on maxing out all his melee skills. I’m currently leveling up a level 19 spider on a level 42 hunter. Splat is now level 35 and I’ve made a very nice stack of coins on the cloth and leather I’ve gathered during her leveling process.

The “secret” to soloing a low level pet to higher level is to find low level green mobs that are easy to pull, have a low chance of adds and are easy to kill. With Cowbane, my 42 bank alt that’s leveling up Splat, I tried several mob types and finally ended up in STV. The trolls near the hunter’s camp were not too bad. But the best mobs I found were the goblins in the mining camp along the river. As casters they stood back and cast instead of rushing up and forcing me to melee. And as casters they didn’t live long after I started filling them with arrows. And as I was several levels higher I often resisted their spells. I found I could kill very quickly there and Splat all but flew through her levels.
